Edited by: BlackHole Bob on 14/01/2005 01:58:42 Hey all...
just a heads up....
Service Pack 2 for win XP is not very good...
In the past three weeks I have corrected many issues ranging from WiFi problems to keyboards being disabled to software issues galore after installing service pack 2
as I have hunted down each and every problem (and fixed them all) it seems that SP2 is a failure and even can be seen clearly as a problem on microsoft tech forums and bulletins
If you have upgraded to SP2 and are now having issues, you may consider reverting back and uninstalling SP2. I have had to do this on a few boxes to get them stable at my work.....
It is not just a glitch and blah blah....SP2 is wrecking havoc with WIFI, graphics and mouse and keyboard drivers....and other things like DEP and such
Some of our software vendors are literally scrambling to keep there products stable and fight this aweful service pack and it is not pretty....
I have uninstalled SP 2 from over 20 boxes in the past two weeks to bring stability to them in mission critical environments....I have uninstalled it on my home PC's as well.

Alot of this is just bull.
I work at MS personal support here in sweden and we have a specific support group handeling Sp2.
What i have experienced so far is that Sp2 fix more then it breaks aswell fix ALOT of virus issues. 95% of the customers callin in with problems has virus/spyware related problems ASWELL not Sp2.
downgrading to Sp1 is not recomended, in any way. Rather try and se whats causing the problem. Update drivers, re-install corrupt programs and check drivers again!
But on the other hand, old programs have a tendancy not to work with SP2..
My 2 cents anyway.

Working fine here, only machine I've had thats had problems since I installed SP2 on it was a RAID controller failure... which was hardly the fault of SP2 :D
Running fine, XP seems to be a lot smoother now :)

SP2 trashed my original install when downloaded as a Software Update.
But since reinstalling and applying SP2 from the full network install file, I cant fault it.

/me just laughs
Windows itself is just a mass of bugs and glitches. Get a real OS: Gentoo
I use Win98SE...only for running EVE, really.

So presumably you're judging Windows based on your experience of an obsolete version of a cut down version of the real thing. If you knew what you were doing that would tell you just how good Windows is. The fact that something as crappy and fundamentally flawed as Win98SE can play something as complicated and resource hungry as Eve is truly impressive.

Heh
The only problem with SP2 that I have seen in the 100+ roll outs I've done is that some systems are too far gone to simply apply a patch that large.
I've never seen a single issue with SP2 on a clean Win XP install...

Windows XP works fine for most people. You gotta be some kind of masochist to want to stick with Win9x anything these days. But still it's imressive to see that it can play something like Eve. -- (Battle hardened miner)

Actually back when XP first came out, alot of gamers stuck with 98SE because of the history with Win2K, and the initial folks who made the jumps had some problems. I was one that stuck with 98SE until, yes August 2004.
I have no problems with SP2 - I would bet those 20 machines you removed SP2 on, you fix the symptom, only to leave the disease of spyware and such. So you really did noone any good at all.
Yes there are other OS out there. But Windows is THE design platform most games are written for. So go ahead and adapt other OS to your games. I don't have time for that, so I stick with what the games are made for. Yes, in this case I'm a lemming, but hey I actually get to play the games and not fiddle with the OS that I just have to use cause I'm some 'uberkewl' guy.

EVE on XP isn't stable. I get dumped every 5-10 mins, sound drops out, even my FPS is sluggish. wiping my Winblows box and putting on a fresh install of 98SE and optimizing it, resolved nearly every OS/hardware issue I had with EVE...and it runs faster.
Just goes to show the direction Microsoft is taking these days...downhill with more bloat.

That's complete and total balogna.
I've never had Eve lock on me, never had sound problems, etc. Win XP SP2, baby. - -

Whahaha this reminds me of my informatics classes : Battle of the OS'es.
Anyhow : UNIX blows in every possible way (except for running servers and the like). SP2 is like the anti-windowsXP : Install SP2 and about 50% chanse you'll system will be so messed up that you need to reŽnstall it all. and yah win98SE is an ok OS but tends to blue screen or just lock up at the slightest issue.
Ty for listening to an unimportant post from an unimportant person.

Played Eve originally on 98SE, worked well.
upgraded to XP pro, again works well..
SP2 upgrade, whole computer works well and eve doesn't crash (only once since exodus out)
I think there are compatibility issues for these people that can't run eve for very long or WinXP SP2....

Henka, do you know when MS is making SP2 a mandatory upgrade? I'm keeping it away from my puter as long as I can. I know I will get issues cos of some nice core hacking software :)
