If this comes across as trolling in any way, shape, or form, I apologize before hand.
I've noticed that in several topics with plenty of productive out comes, it never ends up that way. I see more bashing and completely unproductive replies than something of use.
Its not so much of a surprise to see people disrespect one another simply because they have the internet and a keyboard, but I've noticed that its far greater within the Eve community than most I have been a part of. Most, not all.
I'm not speaking of in-game terms, just the forums. I am sure in-game is just as bad if not worse. I haven't experienced it within the game as of yet.

I find the general mood trollish and playful. People wanting to discuss normal things politely will encounter little attitude. On the other hand, if you happen to be one of those special few who thinks they have the best idea ever, but are actually just too stupid to see how bad idea they have or how it would pretty much ruin EVE, you can expect a decent amount of hostility coming your way no matter how polite you are.

ThereÆs a phrase which may put a light on your confusion. It was coined by one of the less savory groups in EVE. ôWe donÆt want to break the game. We just want to break your game.ö In short, they want to change the way EVE works and recreate it in a form that will cater to the play style they prefer. It isnÆt enough that they are free to play as they wish, they would have everyone restricted to the same play style so that everyone would be compelled to play with them more.
On these forums you will find many attempts to drive those who think differently from forums by use of jeers, name calling, etc. This is because CCP pays some attention to the forums and uses some of what they see in the forums to make game play decisions.

Generally people are unhappy with themselves that they have done something 'uncool' in playing computer games via the internet.
This disappointment and self-loathing normally reflects itself through any self-expression and contact with others while online.

One thing to note is that the EVE forum is not really representative of EVE as a whole. The forum just contains the most opinionated segment. And troll alts, lots and lots of troll alts.
Heck there's alot of variation even within the forum. Think GD is bad? Take a look at COAD. Conversely, New Citizen Q&A is alot more supportive.

Most of the threads here are people repeating the same crap in different ways, which forum regulars have little or no patience for.
But it also is a game which encourages and celebrates the more unpleasant aspects of humans, which doesn't help.

Then stop reading so much CAOD or C&P (where that's pretty much the desired outcome), take most of the stuff in S&I and MD with a grain of salt (thanks to hidden background interests), and frequent Ships&Modules, Missions&Complexes, New Citizens or even OOPE a bit more, but especially New Citizens (where with the exception of the most annoying posters, almost everybody tries to be as helpful as possible). EGD is a crapshoot, can go either way, depends on individual thread (tone of the OP mostly, discussed topic if previously hashed and rehashed, etc). _

A lot of us are jaded after playing for a few years, this game and others, and seeing the same topics being brought up over and over again. There are quite a few people who think that they have absolutely original things to say, and so they open new threads just for themselves, even though the same discussion is going on in 15 other threads on the front page, so it gets old and tiresome after a few years, heh.
But yeah, as Akita is saying, certain forums are very friendly and helpful (New Citizens, Ships, Skills, Market) while others are complete crap (General Discussion) or epeen waving and mostly insults (CAOD etc). And, certain forum posters try to answer newbie questions the best they can, while others are all about insults and noise.

You seem to be implying that people are disrespectful on the internet due to no rl consequences.
I would submit that when people are on the internet, they tend to spout of some of the dumbest things imaginable due to having no rl consequences to their stupidity, therefore causing themselves to get flamed and trolled (and rightly so in my opinion) - - - Dian'h Might - C&Ps resident "internet kleptomaniac" |

I remember when I first started playing eve. I came in here full of sunshine and happiness and rainbows and whatnot. I spoke politely to everyone, never dreamed of taking something that wasn't mine, vowed to be an anti-pirate and to keep my fellow miners safe from all the asshats of eve.
Now I have more characters listed as corp thiefs than I know what to do with, I've disbanded more corps than I care to count (as well as a few alliances), I've listened to a 12 year old cry for his ship on vent (and still chuckle from time to time at the recordings) and sometimes I suicide gank people just for the hell of it.
Now sometimes I'll play a different MMO (not WoW mind you) and the people constantly being nice to each other does nothing but annoy the crap out of me, and almost immediately I think "What's the most offensive thing I could do here that doesn't involve me getting banned?"

The best way to find better eve discussions is to leave General Chat. This forum is the busiest, so it gets the most garbage.
I would say that I've had some of the best conversations with eve players than any other MMO I've played, and sadly there were a few.

Very nicely said.Thats where the phrase "this is a pvp game" comes from.News flash..its a sandbox.Take out the missions, complexes, exploring and concord..then it will be a pvp game.

Also true but this happens because there are flaws in the game mechanics and ccp should take a note to rethink them.

Sometimes you should shut your mouth if you have nothing to say that is constructive. Those that cannot do that need to have it shut for them by the moderators.
Unfortunately doesn't work like that. Sig ---

I'm not speaking of in-game terms, just the forums.
It really depends on how you ask things and on what subforum you post it. Also, some topics (opinions) are a lot more sensitive than others (questions about mechanics). If I have some specific questions, I got very decent answers. If I question game mechanics, I know I can expect everything.
Generally I think the EVE forum is rather helpful. Just don't touch any sensitive topics.

It's not an Eve thing, it's a human nature thing.
Socially speaking people are repressed no matter where they are. The things they want to do they cannot due to the laws and mores of their society and cultures.
There are no such limitations on the internet. It operates with almost complete anonymity for the most part, offering people a completely unfettered venue through which they can act out all of the behaviors not acceptable in their culture.
So... you take a perfectly 'normal' average person, give them a venue offering complete anonymity and immunity from reprisals, and they turn into trolls. It does not matter what venue they are given through which to act, be it a Yahoonews comment wall or a gaming board or a review board for shows intended for toddlers. People, humans as a whole, hate. It is a core dynamic of the species. The 'net just gives them the freedom to spew it without worrying about the person next to them trying to shove a brick through their face.
And Eve's troll species is a relatively bland subset... other gaming venue forums are raging infernos compared to the relatively banal flames that crop up from time to time on these boards.

If you would have to read the same not so smart question the 100th time, you would question the powers of search of the general population too.
Ofc, CCP only moderating posts that contain obvious crimes (insults are a crime in most countries) and topics they don't want to discuss ain't of much help either.

A few generalisations
The forum is full of alts
Just because a "group" make alot of noise and appear to have a lot of support, doesn't mean that it's the most commonly held opinion.
Eve politics plays a small part in opinions, only as far as it's quite hard for some people to agree with someone they've been shooting at for the past few months.
Alot of "new ideas" stem from "how can this help me" rather than how can this make the game better.
Alot of people are playing the wrong game.
Internetspaceships is serious business.
