Hey.
I've got wee bit of a problem right now... When I start the game up the main screen freezes after a while. I can still chat and access my station inventory etc. When running multiple clients this renders one of the clients on the same desktop completely out of use.
This has started since the latest update & might also have something todo with me tinkering with my wine & winetricks to get DDO:EU to run aswell.
This is what I've partially followed for DDO: DDO:EU & Linux HowTo Mainly I've been going for the winhq appdb tho: DDO:EU @ appdb
So some info: Gentoo, Wine 1.2
Anyone that's got any hints to this? It's really annoying that my client/s start to freeze on me.
And I've not googled on this that much yet so there might be a post of this issue somewhere already.
/Tyth.

This is really getting on my nerves, I've tried to make a new .wine dir, just installed corefonts and copied the d3dx9_35 & 36.dll files.
I just don't know what to do to resolve this issue. Anyone that's got any ideas?
In a station the ship I've got active starts shaking and the FPS drops to 0, and if I'm out in space I the textures dissapears or the screen just freezes.

What card/driver do you got? You could try wine 1.3

Edited by: Scorpyn on 11/12/2010 10:00:50 First, rename the Jukebox folder.
After that, it takes longer for me until it freezes. I've tried a bunch of stuff, currently I'm trying it with sound disabled, and that seems to work so far (testing not considered to be complete yet though).

Card: nVidia 8800GT 512MB Driver version: 195.36.31
I might just try another driver version to see if that's the issue.
Jukebox dir has been renamed since ages ago, not disable the audio in winecfg till now tho. But that didn't seem to help me either.

Edited by: Miraqu on 14/12/2010 10:24:10 I had similar troubles with eve on my laptop (not using it much).
I did two things:
1. in ~/.wine/user.reg
[Software\Wine\Direct3D] "VideoMemorySize"="512" (I used 256 but since your card has 512..) Somehow Wine seems to have trouble with shared memory detection.
2. I rebuilt and and reinstalled the graphics drivers, somehow my dkms stuff was screwed up by an x-org update.
One of those did it.
I play DDO too :) but I didnt follow that guide since its not correct / necessary in my opinion and since i played before that guide came up.
They state:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D] "DirectDrawRenderer"="OpenGL" #Spelled wrong WineKeys Link "Multisampling"="disabled" #not necessary since book 7 "OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo" # "RenderTargetLockMode"="readdraw" # utter crap "UseGLSL"="disabled" # we disable the shaders and complain then # was necessary in the very old days. "VideoMemorySize"="###" #very useful

Well I've replicated your .reg and your way of doing things.. Still no luck for me. I've tried rebuilding the nVidia driver, tried swapping to the previous version, and back..
Current Driver version: 195.36.24, .31 is the latest that portage wants to install. Card: 8800GT 512MB
With one single client it takes roughly 5 minutes till the ship starts to wobble and the lights inside the station starts to flicker.

This is the latest? Current is 260.19.21.
I always thought that Gentoo was fairly bleeding edge and would have the newest driver available.
A different question. You can play another game like ddo for hours? Otherwise I would think its an thermal/power management issue.
Someone had difficulty a while ago if his clock differed too much from the eve-time-clock. So you could try to set it via ntpdate or similar.
Otherwise I'm pretty clueless.

Gentoo haven't got the 260 series drivers in the portage for default.. you need to install the ebuilds manually since they're considered unstable/masked .. Upgraded to 260.19.26 and so far no wobbly ships.
DDO ran just fine, so it's not a HW issue.. and I never had any problems in Wintendo either.

So now I think I've tried it all, except for a system reinstallation, and I do hope that I won't need that. Perhaps I can try another WM/DE just to see if the issue is E17 related?

Edited by: Scorpyn on 16/12/2010 23:17:50 Probably not of any help whatsoever, but these specs work for me :
AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor 8gb ram nvidia gtx460, nvidia drivers v260.19.29 kernel 2.6.36 x.org 1.9.2 wine 1.3.9 xfce4 4.6.2
This is archlinux x86_64, everything is latest updates from the official repository.
I have also followed this guide to get StarCraft II working. Not sure if any of it matters for EVE though.
Originally by: Tythihoz Jukebox dir has been renamed since ages ago, not disable the audio in winecfg till now tho. But that didn't seem to help me either.
Hmm... I disabled the sound in the game settings, not in wine... try disabling sound in the settings menu ingame instead.

Well we've ruled most causes out.
I still believe its a RTC - issue, maybe there is a ntp-like daemon running or similar. which sets the rtc. Eve is known for that behavior.
Otherwise I am not that sure if its E 17, then it would happen with all games.
Have you tried to disable eve-voice?

This made me remember that I've also changed the cpu frequency scaling governor from ondemand to performance. I'll try changing it back to see if the issue returns.

Now that I see it more clearly. I think it might have something to do with my habit to crontab rdate every 5 minutes or so... So far so good after having taken that line out from my crontab. ;)

Use ntp to keep your computer's clock accurate. rdate sets the clock to a new time every time you invoke it. ntp lets the clock drift to keep it accurate.
ntp 4.2.6
Kernel 2.6.32 / Xorg 1.7.7 / NVidia driver 195.36.31 / Wine 1.2.2
(NVidia driver 260.19.21 & .29 cannot handle desktop switches without occasionally crashing). --

I've had good luck with gentoo->wine->EVE setup so far.
Not much fiddling with installation.
Only installed essentials, so to speak: - wine 1.2 - EVE - corefonts (winetricks) - vcrun2005 (winetricks) - DirectX from EVE dir (...CCP/EVE/bin/DirectX/) - regular wine install - rename Jukebox in (...EVE/res/audio/) - winecfg - and set Virtual Desktop to one pixel less than screen resolution (i had the game flicker when changing monitors, this fixed it) - disable the sound once on the login screen - re-enabled audio in game... no problem since (used it with alsa and later with jack). Just open audio player and pause the playback, because it cannot find any songs and it just runs through the playlist over and over. - setting VideoMemorySize in regedit helped with 'Out of Video Memory' message on login screen when spanning over two monitors with wine virtual desktop. - later I've set rest of the recommended stuff in register, just to "make sure"
Everything runs on full now, with audio ON (only no music).
I do believe that you have probably tried most, if not all of this stuff. Just thought it won't hurt to put it all up here.
Maybe you could try removing wine completely (including --depclean), and reemerging it again. Or it couldn't hurt to leave it to rebuild over night. I had some stuff started working after that many times. Even after the first build, when it's all set up, I run "-e" both 'system' and 'world'
Btw. gentoo does have nvidia-drivers-260, you just need to set ~amd64. I've been using it last week without any problem.
My spec: gentoo amd64 nVidia GTX 460 xfce4 wine 1.2

Thanks for your effort, tho as stated in my last post my 'rdate' thing was the issue.

Update :
Performance governor seems to work. Ondemand governor seems to make eve unstable.
Also, I've added -q to ntpd startup options to only make it update when booting.
