Now, I'm not going to beat around the bush here. Pretty much every guy has wondered what it would be like to sport a set of lovelies. I'm pretty sure I'd lose a day's work - but that's only somewhat related.
This is relevant to the test server right now because we're going to be testing the updated character creation again soon.
The new character generator is coming to TQ in January. And an uncertain number of months after that we'll have Incarna. And EVE's wildly mis-represented gender population will become fully 'represented' in digital space.
As EVE may even use directional and distance based voice chatting in stations (which would be awesome - so damn awesome) it will be odd if we have 45% of our current 'women' population wandering about sounding like burly men (or nerdly men).
I do hope CCP plans to include two options to address this issue.
First, a dramatic improvement in the voice font technology allowing our well hung women folk to act the part more believably. And second, the chance for those who wish to, to change their pilot's gender when the new character creator hits - because yes, there is a pretty wild difference between making a portrait because the guys are damn ugly and actually seeing a buxom behind when you leave your ship to chat with your mate, William.
Option one is great because, honestly, I don't care if my corp mates or buddies know I actually sound more like the singer from CAKE than some woman named Kate but it would be impossible to be "in character" while gambling on some station with strangers if Minya sounded more like a Marlow.
Option two is necessary for those who might be a little uncomfortable standing on both sides of the gender line once we get the chance to flaunt our bits from bust-down.
Both are necessary because I don't believe in telling players what they can or cannot do with their imaginary characters (and I'll go out on a limb here and say CCP would probably agree with that).
I'm sure CCP is well aware of the issue and threads have undoubtedly been made in the past, but the day is drawing nearer when we may have to don some pretty dresses - so let's talk about it!
Finally, a little poll to give you something to start response posts with. Choose one:
1 - We need both options - hurrah for freedom of choice! Open options mean everyone wins - even those who want to play transgendered pilots (which is completely fine, but I know not everyone does).
2 - We only need option one - you picked it, you've gotta deal. Even if it might be awkward and completely break immersion.
3 - We only need option two - change gender if you want to, but if not, too bad.
4 - You get nothing. You lose. Good day, sir! - Status quo except with 3D rendering. Bring on the awful and awkward.

Oh god yes I would kill for this. Should be allowed as a one time thing now that we are getting new characters.
And you could have a history on the characters bio, showing all changes...please do this CCP, you are breaking my immersion

Voice font was already on test server prior to phase 1 of Incursion deployment.
Don't know if it's still on or not.

Edited by: Minya Coyote on 10/12/2010 08:57:37 Voice font is on Tranquility NOW - but in it's current iteration it's just terribad. Seriously awful bad.
But that's only one issue and possible solution for potential players.
The best solution I can see would be allowing everyone a one time chance to swap the gender when the new character creator hits. A name change isn't even necessary (and for some nefarious types it could be kind of game-breaking). We'd have a few 'boys named Sue' but then a talented musician could write a song about them...
It's not like we're hoping to change race or bloodline, either.

I support the concept, but believe it should be more then just gender, the Brutor creation is just plain ugly and will be nothing close or similar to the pic I have now ( I know their not the same but I would like a similar representation since I modeled it similar to myself in futuristic eye) the skin tones are dark and darker nothing like I have now.

Plex for *****!... Sure hope not, but wouldn't be surprised.
I agree with the idea, should be allowable at least once. Also looking forward to the poddings due to cyber sex scams attempted with voice changers/fonts.

1. I think I'm the first person to actually use the numbers for voting >.>
Anyway, I'll be staying the same, but I agree that this would lead to a huge amount of awkwardness for some people, and the general freedom would be the best choice. As long as it doesn't let you change the bloodline there won't be any difficulty implementing it I don't think, and it really seems like a win-win-win-win-win scenario. We chose our character when it didn't particularly matter what they looked like because we never actually saw them; a chance to adjust for the drastic change in play style would be a really nice thing.

I'm glad this is getting some support - even if only one person has done the little poll thing at the end.
There's a lot to be said for freedom of choice in these games and whenever a MMO adds new features that dramatically change the game it is usually a nice idea to give the playerbase a way to adjust free of cost. It happens in other, lesser, MMOs when skill trees are balanced - for example. Characters are usually given a free chance to re-spec talents or skills.
What we're asking for here is much less about mechanics, even, as it is only a cosmetic choice. Though I would love to play as a fully endowed Minya on a regular basis - in such a serious game it would make me feel a little odd. Especially when EVE, more than any other game, can translate into real-world activities like freelance writing, meet-ups, art creation, etc.
EVE is probably the most profound MMO in existence with how its players take real-life hobbies and meld them with their in-game characters. It is so sandboxish in how nearly anything is possible. That aspect of the game is beautiful. And as players get more and more creative with these things our characters potentially become more and more a part of who we are.
Yeah, I'm getting a little dramatic with that, but it has a grain of truth. And now that we're going to have full bodies! (super excited!)
I'd rather leave my gender-twisting to sillier games involving Caribbean pirates or super heroes.

Option 1 sounds dandy to me. Tho im often a recluse or playing with people i know IRL so it would affect me quite little. I'd definitely love to be able to keep up a character persona for when i do interact with others. You can try and try you cant be me. |

Welp. The new character creator is pretty great and has a ton of potential as it gets more and more optimized. And more clothes and gadgets get added...
But there's one *gadget* I certainly can't tweak yet.
Ahem. Bad joke.

I agree and think we need both options and maybe more. I would suggest a one-time-option for racial and bloodline changes too.

I cannot agree more with you... I didn't choose to play Brutor just become ordinary black person after Incursion release. CCP should rebuild current Brutors on sisi or give all players an option to one-time race-bloodline-gender switch as it would happen if capsulers clone-jumped into someone else's clone

If you want character of oposite gender - make one. Don't complain that you've made a wrong choise then you created your character in first place.

While you may be right to a point, someone's views on their character 5 years ago (in my case) might not reflect their views now. While I have the option to create a new character of whatever race, gender, bloodline, preference for toothpaste I like, I would lose the time and energy invested into this char. As Eve is a lot longer term investment than other MMOs it makes sense for more options to recreate a character. Hell we can rewrite the entire build of our brains with remaps, it makes sense for our world to have the ability to allow sex changes and/or plastic surgery.
My char is but ugly cause when I started I was eager to get into game and play so I welcome the chance to at least remake his appearance with incarna, but I think those who want to should have the option. I vote for option 1

I couldn't agree more. I don't need a gender change, I do want a bloodline change though. When I made a character when I started playing, I didn't know what bloodlines were supposed to look like at all. Why didn't CCP made the characters look like how they wanted to start with?
Nowhere in the tutorial or character creation it was mentioned "but this bloodline is ssupposed to look different and we may enforce a huge change to this bloodline's looks"?
But yes, we may as well get a "looks remap" so we can remake our characters when the new editor is forced upon us.

I vote 1 as well. I have no intention on changing my characters' genders, but I will greatly appreciate the gesture. Honestly, I would like to see us given the ability to change bloodlines -- Especially since, to my knowledge, the only thing it really affects is the appearance of your character, and bloodlines in Carbon aren't nearly the same cosmetically as bloodlines in TQ.

This. While there was a time when bloodlines did matter (They determined your starting skills/attribute layout), for the past 2 years (not certain, just throwing out a number) or so the only thing they've affected is the tiny little picture in the corner when you talk. With the game moving in a direction where a character's appearance makes a huge difference, I think it would be fair to give players who want to the option to completely re-create their character. I don't think I'd be changing much, but I know there are a lot of people who would enjoy that.

the basis of that choice is gone. attributes are equal, skill difference is minimal, and rookie ship is irrelevant. so, aesthetics, as only effective difference between bloodlines and genders, is enforced upon players.
there should be option to change both. ________________________________ : Forum Bore 'Em : Foamy The Squirrel - [jedi handwave] "There is no spoon." |

I vote for option 1> I believe in freedom of choice, and yes when we created our characters we had no idea this was going to be implemented into the game (started playing on day of release back in 2003.). I can't see it being difficult as you can already change your characters portrait as it is. So long as it stays with the same bloodline race and sex. But with clone technology why not be able to change XY chromosones for XX?
I know CCP have said before they wont allow gender changes "yet". But who knows we may see it with the arrival of Incarna.

If you go all teary-eyed but with a husky male voice it kinda loses some of its intrinsic appeal :P
