To expand on this, for higher level sites they use multible Tengu's spidertanking to complete them. They have an RR Subsystem for sheilds.

Are Tengu's used because their configurablility offers some special capability, or just because they are a little tougher than say spider-tanking Nighthawks for instance?

I'd like to know this as well. I haven't yet found a need for a T3 when I can do most things fine with a BC or HAC. What's the selling point?

Not a little, quite a lot, while putting out more DPS. But mostly I prefer them for unprobable mission-running.

OK, that's a good one. Running missions and plexes in low/null sec and being unprobable.
Is this the only thing anyone can come up with?

I'm going to try Punkin' Chunkin' with it next.

PvP in 100mn or 10mn afterburner fit.
reasonably agile, decent buffer, good dps, good speed.
tank much better than you think it is due to afterburner and low sig.

i mission in my tengu. While a golem would be similar in power and be able to salvage, the long train time for the golem, combined with the annoyance of slowboating through those 50km distant gates makes me stick with tengu.
i HAM fit by tengu ~900 dps out to about 24km with 6 terror rage HAMs and a target painter (faction BCUs) goes 672 m/s without overheating the AB, so range is rarely a problem can tank pretty much everything with a small pith b-type booster, boost amp, and 2 hardeners

This was my setup. Tanks decently enough against most, replaced the T2 invul with a T2 photon against laser rats. 430 DPS with Scourge, 551 DPS with Scourge Fury. Common sense applies: use the Fury until someone pops into local, overheat your ECCMs and unload it. Or if you are close to completion, just leave your ECCMs overheated, you are still unprobable that way and ECCMs are slow to heat.
If you are less paranoid, you can drop the second backup sensor array for another BCS and only need to overheat ECCMs and unload once probes are on overview, since it would take a max-skilled char, in a max-bonused ship with faction probes to find you at that point (1.07 ratio). 584 DPS with scourge fury with that setup, 450ish (but still unprobable) with T1.
Of course, this thing doesn't have a cloak, nor is it nullified, so make sure you have a scout, instant undocks, bounces, safespots, etc. Basic 0.0 stuff, common sense applies, etc. I used mine with a stealth bomber for scouting and additional DPS in the mission.
If you feel comfortable dualboxing, it's a pretty good setup.

I heard there were some issues with sensor strength enhancing implants not working with the sensor strength subs on T3s. That's why I avoided using them, other than Halos (which had other uses).

Ive never had a problem for quite a long time. I run 3 stations (one of each faction), never had it happened to me.
Even if it did, it will let me petition to liquidate my implants, or just petition to re-fit the implants later on.

I use mine to make high sec runs out of o.o w/ high value loot drops. Interdiction nullifier + cov ops cloak = nearly unchathable.
They also make amazing high end plex tankers. Warp in tengu and get ago, warp in dps while hml tengu tanks from range.
