I have kept this thread open for new players to hear from seasoned veterans and other players as to how to make a start in EVE. New players can also find useful tricks and hints in the EVE new Citizens Q&A forum.
In general - Despite any frustrations that there may be when starting out, please refrain from any more ranting, as this against the EVE Online forum rules and is not constructive. Also, contrary to popular belief, profanity does not strengthen an argument.

lets be realistic, any game, more so the online ones. are "stacked against new players" as you put it. there will never be a game that isnt, dont like people having better skills etc. find another game you want to play, and start playing the day it gets released. unless you do that, you will always be down the food chain from somebody.
i'm sorry i had to break it to you like that, but facts are facts. you can sit on these boards and whine till you blue in the face, or go on hunger strike. but in the end, you didnt start in 2003 (neither did i 5 months myself) so get used to it.

Edited by: ManOfHonor on 15/01/2005 20:14:50 the first time i dies as a newb was when i undocked in a frigate to go shoot up some other guys (w4r).... they had cruise missiles, thats all i remember, and then my clone woke up :)
sometime during summer or spring of 04
going through low sec zones w snipers in it is like attacking a lv99 NP uberdragon or something w yr lv3 hands
and doing it with 90% of your stuff/isk in yr cargo is like attacking said dragon, and betting all your possesions that ud win... and the reward was some tiny, crappy dagger
edit: the only game yr ever going to find that isnt stacked against new players is gona be barby or some crap like that _____________________________ Honor Glory And Strength! Honor Above Self Glory For Self Strength Of Self

When entering 0.4 or lower space, you are taking added risk.
I do enter 0.4 and lower in Industry ships now and then, but EVERYTIME I fully understand and accept the risks. I never enter 0.4 or below in hauler (or any ship) without some paranoia, no matter how much I expect an easy crossing.

you just goto know your space and hang in it.
trust knowone you meet in 00 space till you get too know them.
when doing missions in kill zones always if you can fill your low slots with wcs.
learn your ships for the right job is a good aid i guess too.
if your nerves, always set your auto befor you travel even if you use instas. that way if your ganked at a jump in gate you know the pod will jump out and worp out.(remeber to prset your auto too 60km so if they are at the other out going gate you can click too a moon.) never stay at your first moon move on too a astroid feild and park next too the bigest rat or rat pack you can fine. they can be your pal in a pod. frigs can lock fast. but not that fast most times if auto is set and you hit it as soon as the pod shots out.
always in kill zones scout first with a made alt. it dosnt take too much time too do that.
ask other players alot about whats ahead and do pirates hang around often.
always work your map, look for kill zones on it and how many ships where ganked in the last hr.
dont trust the map too be right as gankers will log leving a scout behind too call them back when a target moves close too there system. they do this to not show up on the map.
kill a alt on sight in 00 if it buzzes around you too long and says nothing.
work two skills that aid your getaway. spaceship command & evasive maneuvering.
always when you can slip in and make insta jumps befor you move anything of value through.
when in a belt rating keep the system window open if someone jumps in run too a made safe spot as soon as you can untill your shoure what this guy is all about.
dont spown 750ks with worp jammers. if the rats got you worp jamed it will give time too the frig jumping in on you too get at you and pin you long enough for his pals from the next system too gank you aswell + the rats will still be shoting at you while they are aswell.
always pack fof cruise missiles with you when ratting too deal with the trap frigs drons aswell.
dont drink and fly!
no grass smoking on the job, it will just make you say f-it all the time so you dont do none of the above too often.
do i do all these things always and never get ganked.
hell no, most times im too lazy and cant be botherd or too messed up too care.
witch can = ganked!

I agree 100% on this post, in order to really suceed as a player in the game of eve you are going to need friends, it is alot harder to try to get through the game by yourself and alot less fun.
Sure someone who is just starting out isnt going to be able to take someone like Tank, or some of the older players out there, but if you have a corporation that thinks and plays the same way as you, you can pretty much get through anything and everything out there. -----------------------

Ignore the retards. Talk in local. Check the corporation hiring section of forums.
Don't quit Eve. Once you are in a small group (or large) with some friends you get to know over a few days. You will realise that this game is actually quite fun, if tedious at times.
I mined Scordite for many days in the start. But what helped was that my corp mates in BS would drop by every few hrs to mine 4 times what I did in 1/4th the time I did. And deposit it into my can so I could make some money.
It's all about the ppl you get to know. Don't try and do this solo or you will find grief. There are others I know who have over ****loads of ISK and do solo stuff.. but not everyone is like that.

It's a cold cruel Universe out there, and it doesn't care one way or the other if you live or die.
If you quit, it's won. Too hard on your own?. Join a corp. Theres security in numbers........mostly.
I've been ganked, pwnd, scammed and lost more ships and ISK than I care to guess at. However I'm still here cos I'll be damned if I'll let it beat me. Plus my Corp mates are great which makes all the difference.
Roids are a Menece I tell you, hunt then down I say, hunt them down!!

Ok first I have no regret what so ever, And if you jump to the same gate half a hour later. and get pod killed a 2nd time (that was funny )... then i guess you shud go back to RTS. blah blah yada yada..
Originally by: MutationZ Hi all,
I've been playing Eve for almost a month now. I've gone thru the painful process of training up all the low skills so that my character can actually do something.
I've done all the mind numbing *snip* boring kill a drone or deliver a pile of *snip* courier missions.
I just got money together and bought an industrial ship and traded a bit. In 0.4 space a spaz (-10 rating) shoots and kills my ship and pod. (and 95% of my capital which was in the cargo bay :( ) Thanks Chaz Pounder. Hope it gave you the orgasm you implied it did.
I digress.
After weeks of mind numbing *snip* stuff I get podded and pod killed. Wtf? Are we just paying 20 Euros a month so we can be fodder to the people who have played since beta due to Skill points?
I mean some one stands in 0.4 space 161 km away from the gate blasting every *snip* dude that comes thru???
What can I do about this? Zip, *snip*, nada. *snip*
I mean, sure there should be a learning curve but it will take 3 months or so for this game to be fun (read equal footing - give or take) -not chugging around in a one shot kill rust bucket
*snip* this.
I'm back to rts
Insert *this *snip* sux emoticon here*

Ok, so you got killed in an indy at a gate by someone 161 km from the gate. Ok, he was setup like that. I've been playing the game for about a year. If I was on my own, and jumped through to a system where there was someone 161km away with an insta locking gankgeddon or similar, I'd be just as much toast, and I've got a scratch over 13 million skill points. Industrial ships are big rusty targets. Deal with it.
As for you loosing your pod? well, that can be down to plain lag, your stupidity, or a combination of both. I wouldn't loose any sleep over it. As for loosing all your stuff, thats your own fault. Should travel with all your capital in one place.
what can you do about this? Take head of the warning when you jump in the system (you didn't turn it off did you?) Get a few friends together, get a decent tackling ship, and go take him down. *THATS* what you can do about it.

I know how hard games can be, luckily i had a friend already in game when i joined and was able to get into HC in Xetic. Helped alot :D
I do think an idea for very very high insurance and clone premiums for people with very low sec status would be good. They may ***** but then they are the ones who have been going round killing people for no reason other than ammusment (its different if its a 0.0 war, at least i think so)
Whenever i geta new mate into game ill generally give em 5mil isk or so to help get them started.
