Edited by: Moot Point on 16/12/2010 14:50:06 Is there a common drone used to defend miners against rats during mining? I recently upgraded to a Retriever and I'm looking for protection while mining.
I've looked at Heavy Attack Drones and Scout Drones. Is this a simple matter of "buy what you can afford"?
Thanks!

It's also about what type of drone you can use & how many you can launch at one time.
I use T2 scout drones when I mine w/ my Retriever and can launch 5 at a time. I also use a combination of drones, like one from each faction and double up on whichever one I have more skills with. Never took a hit from a rat using this method.

Thanks, I've done with using four T1 Hobbies until I can my skill to five, then I'll use five T2 Hobbies. Does using a variety of drones really help? Moots |

Most mining ships only have room for a flight of 5 light scout drones, mining frigates and cruisers even less. Usually the Gallente drones are best for PvE.

Many more times than I want to admit, I'll go mining and notice that my drones are missing. Since I tend to mine when doing something else, I often forget little things like my little friends. They are left cold and frightened while their daddy has long forgot which belt he was mining the previous day. Because of that, I now just grab any five T1 light drones I got as mission loot and let them play with the hi-sec pirates. Since they aren't my personal pets (and were destined to the reprocessor anyway) I don't mind if I notice the next day they aren't in my drone bay. |

Hobgoblin IIs are the best all-round light drone. If you are mining in high-sec they will be able to quickly pop any rat that warps in on you.
They are also relatively easy to train into.

Vexor and Arbitrator are mining cruisers too. Come with 100 and 150 m¦ . The Arby has only room for 2 mining lasers and thus it's worse. Both get a bonus on mining drone yield.
When the need for a fight arises you can switch mining for small or medium scout drones which again receive a bonus on damage and survivability.
As for types you want hobgoblin / hammerhead unless you need to fight angel cartel pirates, for which you want warrior / valkyrie.

Mining in 0.5 in an Osprey with 4 Hobgoblin I drones worked for me. I however did find I had to actively send the drones to attack belt rats as soon as they landed, as I couldn't tank them well in the Osprey. The rats also would sometimes do a lot of damage to the drones if the drones got targeted.
I used drones in a Retriever the same way, as the Retriever has even less tank, so you have to kill the rats quickly.
Using 5 Hobgoblin II drones tore-up any NPC rat. In a Hulk, I can completely ignore belt rats in 0.5 systems, as the NPC just don't do enough damage to dent my tank.

Amarr space has Sansha's - vulnerable to EM & Thermal Gallente Space Serpentis - vulnerable to Thermal & Kinetic. Minmatar Angels - vulnerable to Explosive & Kinetic. Caldari Guristas - vulnerable to Kinetic & Thermal.
Each of them has a primary vulnerability to a specific type of weapon - and the native drones for each race (you can tell by the color) do the type of damage that these rats are most vulnerable too.
Gallente Hobgoblin - Thermal Amarr Acolytes - EM Caldari Hornets - Kinetic Minmatar Warriors - Explosive
Now ... the reason for carrying Hobgoblin's is that each of the four basic types of rats - 3 of them have Thermal as either their primary or secondary vulnerability. Thus - carry Hobgoblins the odds are you'll be best set to hurt the rats as long as they aren't Angels.
So if you don't know what you'll be facing - then Hobgoblins are your best choice.
The thing is - mining - you do know what space you are in so you do know the types of rats you'll be facing since the rats in each factions space are pretty much the same. Thus, if you just use the drones which are designed to fight these rats - you will be fine.
The thing is there - that it mostly doesn't really matter. Any Light Scout Drone is more than capable of taking out .5 and above rats which are mostly frigates - and the reason you want Light Scout Drones. Bigger drones are for bigger ships. The bigger drones are more powerful but they are slower too. Slower doesn't matter with bigger ships - as the bigger ships are slower as well - but with .5 and above rats - you're dealing with frigate class rats - and they are best engaged by Light Scout Drones.
Also, T1 drones are good enough for belt rats. Where you want to use T2 drones is on missions - where there are lots and lots and lots of rats - and the faster you can kill them the sooner you can move on to another mission. Mining you mostly run into between one and three at a time and it isn't a constant threat. Just make sure you pick them up as soon as they come into your belt.
For this reason - you want to have at least 2 tabs for your overview - one with the rocks and one without the rocks - that way you won't have all these rocks filling your Overview and can pick up rats and ... anyone else ... coming into your belt right away. Only use the tab with the rocks in it long enough to target a new one and then shift back.

You won¦t need T2 drones for fighting belt rats in highsec. With decent drone skills (drone interfacing!) my Hobgoblin I one-shot belt rats.
Remember when getting disconnected with drones out, they might be lost, when you are not able to re-enter the game in given time.
Hope this helps.
