I am coming back to eve after a 3 year break. It seems much has changed because I don't recognize the political landscape anymore. Can some one give me a quick update on what's been going on? Where are all the massive fleet battles taking place? Do massive 100 vs 100 still happen? What happened to the biggest alliances of 3 years ago? Any input is appreciated.

The simple answer is it's too much to convey in a single post.
"Do massive 100 vs 100 still happen?" uhm.. well. If you do a quick check on the forums you'll find that 1000 - 1600 people in a battle happens most weekends.
Where they happen? Just check the map for ships destroyed.

Everything has changed and nothing has changed. Basically its the same ole alliance e-peening with massive blobs of ships but now the ships are really really big and powerful with 12000 dps and effective hitpoints in the tens of millions.

BoB is now IT.
The story behind it is long but a summary would be... they were invaded, pushed back to a handful of systems, then an emo director disbanded the alliance and defected to goons, who promptly registered the alliance ticker to screw with them. Love em or hate em, it was a funny time to be on either side :)
This is not the alt you are looking for. |

There's some "history of eve" thread around here somewhere. check eve-search.com to find the thread by that name.

The only thing you got right was the emo director disbanding the alliance. At the moment he disbanded bob the goons has bashed themselves ineffectively against the solid defences and pretty mcu given up. Then the director disbanded bob and there was a week or so long fail cascade that eventually let the goons fumbling attempts at alliance pvp finally prevail.
Long story short it was an embarrasing end to a major years long war for everyone involved. Why? Because now that the original goons had fullfilled their dream of taking over delve they lost interest in eve and bailed for a short stint griefing star trek online in hilarious ways. But before they left for greener pastures they disbanded goonswarm and stole pretty much everything that wasn't in a private hanger. So whats left of the goons are just a name and not the real goons.

Same stuff, same names, different corp/alliances. More macros.

I heared that part a little different. Goons where quite happy in Delve. So happy that they dropped cyno jammer upgrades in any iHub they could find. (That change of gameplay happend a few month after they took Delve and it's nice moon goo.) As a result money was leaving their wallets faster than they could rent space out. (Goons hate farming.) Before it all went against a wall (IT took Fountain and started to take Delve back) the glorious leader of all goonieness kicked all corps from Goonswarm and filled the corp wallet with ISK to let the alliance remain as a Symbol of Fail for years to come.
If you find out where that leader works now IRL you will drop to the ground in laughter. If you learn the label that is attached to his desk you will not recover.

No, the pubbies were happy in delve. When I say original goons I mean the top leadership who all came from the SA forums to grief eve and found out you can't grief a game that is literally built around griefing as a core game concept. Then after much internal debate they decided to go 'legit' and do the alliance thing so they could at least generate some sort of tears but they were pretty bad at it up until they got a few decent pvp oriented corps on the payrole like PL for instance. Enter the long futile struggle against bob that took up the majority of the goons time until the suprise ending disband and fail cascade. So with noone left to grief after taking delve they set up all the pubbie member corps for the fall and then griefed their own alliance. It was slickly done too with all sort of conflicting info and other misdirections. But make no mistake the entire original core membership of the goons was in on it and pulled it off to goony perfection.
Alas when they left it made eve a lesser place.

This forum link points to a nice time lapse video showing the sovereignty changes over the past 3 years. Might be useful :)

This reminded me of one of the funnier movies I've seen: Airplane!

And, then the Arabs came and they bought Mercedes Benzes. And, Prince Charles started wearing all of Lady Di's clothes. I couldn't believe it, he took her best summer dress out of the closet, and put it on, and went to town.
