Quote: Planetside had a lot of really great things about it, but it also had some frustrating things. The whole Sanctuary concept is something that slowed things down too much. We also didn't get people back into the action quickly enough. But the core of Planetside - massive battles with vehicles and infantry was something we nailed really well. To me, Planetside Next means we get a chance to take the essence of everything that was fun in Planetside and make it a lot better. Massive battles on a scale no other FPS will touch. None of this 64 player stuff. REALLY MASSIVE. With much better organization, and a tight focus on making sure the action is always going on, with awesome graphics. Damn I love Planetside. I really do.

Quote: Iceberg Interactive will be bringing the English-language version of Earthrise to European retail in February 2011 and has promised exclusive extra content for boxed version buyers. Plans on localized versions will be revealed at a later stage.

Quote: So to put it in perspective, imagine yourself being one of the NPC characters in one of the GTA games, ie - not playing a protagonist like Niko Bellic in GTA 4 or Claude Speed in GTA 2, but instead playing the guy who works with Governor Johnny Rotten, or working for Jerkov in the Russian Mob. If you in fact PLAYED that character, you would basically sit around and do nothing 99% of the time, while waiting for your "scene" to occur, at which point you would add your cool flavor to the game and then get shot. No sane gamer would actually want to act out that role (it would be like a really boring version of a Civil War reenactment). But that kind of single-player progression design is what makes those games brilliant from the protagonist's point of view (and duds for the NPCs). One of the complaints about APB was the fact that sometimes one side in a conflict were basically asked to act as story progression for the other side, and that didn't always seem to work out very well.

It was awsome until it got its own swg:nge changes which was aimed at giving it more mass market(read:mass idiot with disposible income) appeal to bump up the profits. Hopefully they learned their lesson and will go the eve route and only go for the niche audience again.

Been thinking of trying it, kinda bored of MW:2 and BLOPS. Missed out on Tabula Rasa, always wanted to play a FPS MMO. - - [SERVICE] Corp Standings For POS anchoring

Yeah but they dealt mostly with their own culture at time they bought up all the games like planetside that were mostly aimed at a western oriented audience and so made the wrong design choices. Which is saying that if they had been dealing with a japanese market then all the BFR and other stuff would probably have gone over great. But it flopped with the western audience who mostly like to ground pound and drive the smaller stuff and not have to fight some huge ass robot of doom in every battle. So time will tell if they have adapted their marketing strategy and make it a great game like it used to be.
At least I hope they do.

BFR's did kind of ****tify it. However, I still think the biggest problem planetside at the time was the lag. Oh the, lag I experienced with that game....
Also, the jackhammer was overpowered.....

tbh i never really had major issues with the lag, even the huge battles were playable if a little laggy. oh i just remembered the expansion they rleaesed that gave everyone who bought it, extra weapons, that were unavailable to those who didnt. Be nice to see if they are going to base eeverything on certs again, or go with more rpg elements like they were first going to do with the original Planetside

The graphics system in original Planetside was weird. If you was doing a base takeover that involved many players within the base complex the fps would be very slow if you walked down an empty passage way within the base. Because the graphics system rendered players near you, nevermind if you had no line of sight to them.
BFR's ruined the game balance. And other stuff was daft. But it seems that SOE have recognised the mistakes they have made. So hopefully Planetside Next will be decent.

Also, about this "Not getting players back into the action quick enough"... I don't know what he is talking about in this case. I don't remember what they're called, since it's been so long since I've played, but there were vehicles that let you spawn wherever you set that vehicle down. I don't know at all how sanctuary slowed it down, either...

I'm not sure, it's been developed to be used for mmos in the last few years and a few mmos in development are using it. Although APB did put a dent in it's credibility but that was really bad coding on their side.
Only other example I can think of is Mortal Online, which is actually just one world on one server just like EvE, and you can literally see from one end of the land to the other. Not bad for indie developers.
Really, the UE gives as much back as you put into it, some games which use it run like a dream, others can bring my computer to it's knees. Does have a lot of VERY nice features though.
