Hello
Have we not all been hunting a guy pulling the infamous mwd cloak trick on us. Making travel more or less, unless you have a realy speedy pilot and alot of luck, perfectly safe throguh lowsec or 0.0 when you don't have a bubble. Likewise are we not always cursing like rabbits stuffed into a chickenfarm full of foxes when this happens.
I would argue that the mwd/cloak trick is unintended use of game mechanics for ships not meant to use a covert ops cloak possibly also blackops: god knows dont need to be nerfed more, if memory serves me right ccp tried to fix this a year or two back but failed horribly.
On cloaks we have the lovely sensor recalibration time, I propse adding the following: "Warp Enging startup time" or similary named.
The explanation is in the name of the new attribute. RP: A cloak to shield you from being picked by sensors offlines your warp core in the process, giving it a short startup cycle after decloaking.
As for how long, Id say with appropriate skills the timer should land on about just 4-5 seconds for a improved cloak on a ship not meant to be able to slip around at will, more then enough for proper ships to attain tackling, but will still leave your run of the mill bs/bc unable to just lock you down before warp seeing as you'll already be aligned.
Yay, or nay?

It's not really a trick is it... it's just activating you mwd and then activating your cloak isn't it...

The idea behind the trick is based on 3 things:
1. You need to be between 75% and 125% of max speed to warp.
2. MWD gives a 500% boost to speed.
3. T2 cloaks (not the cov-ops ones) reduce your speed by 75% when active.
To perform the MWD-cloak trick you must pulse (hit and hit again so it doesn't cycle) your MWD while simultaneously hitting the cloak module and ALGNING towards the celestial of your choice. When the MWD cycle ends (you should be watching it like a hawk), deactivate the cloak, and punch the warp button. If done properly, you are now safely in warp.
Now, whether this was an "intended" thing or not... I don't know. However, right now I see someone who is complaining about how carebears/PvEers adapted to the age old tradition of gatecamps and doesn't want to adapt himself. Pro-tip: a fast enough ship with a bunch of drones can decloak such a ship if close enough (in much the same fashion that interceptors do in 0.0 gatecamps vs. cloaking ships). _______________________

The trick is (non cov ops) cloaks make you very slow when cloaked, but if you get that mwd cycle off with the first cloak cycle (you can activate it quick enough after...) you get 1 speedy period before the prop mod's off, so you can move from where people saw you blink & probably charged to with drones out.
I say nay, you need to be able to get away from wormholes in shiny T3s/paper-ish recons, and wormholes always put you within 5km of them when you jump, whereas gates put you in a much larger area to cover by the campers. That said, catching cov ops on holes is a PITA personally. |

So then the trick is only really helpful should you not be able to fit a Covert Ops Cloak?

may be unintended, but as there's gm posts explaining exactly how to do it, and encouraging players to use it for low and null sec exploration, it's endorsed by ccp.

some people are quite good at catching them. you just need more practice.

theres no way to counter it, people will say with a fast ship, but dictors can't do it and anything smaller will get 1 shotted by gate guns

Bubbles and fast tackle make it useless in nullsec, while in lowsec its fairly rarely seen.
Tbh I'm not too bothered with clever people surviving more often than idiots flying through lowsec in itty 5s.

No. Turning on cloack will automaticaly turn off any other module at the end of their cycle.

Well, the idea is to decloak right before/as soon as the cycle ends... and sometimes glitches do happen.
I lost a transport with an alt thinking the same thing (that cloaks will kill "autocycling"). But when I decloaked (right before the MWD cycle ended I might add) the MWD kept going.
Better to be safe than sorry. _______________________

You don't have to target someone to decloak them in an interceptor. A hauler with a T2 cloak takes some time to align...10 seconds or so, and will be doing so at double-digit speeds. That gives you plenty of time to fly over and decloak them. Conversely, the hauler pilot has to train some skills to be able to perform the maneuver--a two-week old newb won't have the MWD or Cloaking skills to do it. Additionally, some of the T1 haulers can't do it because they can't fit a cruiser-class MWD, so there are plenty of limitations. On combat ships, your lock time is nerfed to hell, just for having it fitted. So, its not pure win-sauce.

This trick is one of the few things left that benefits solo PvP more than blob PvP.
It's countered with bubbles in 0.0.

Edited by: Wacktopia on 26/12/2010 02:30:06 The trick is to use the boost of the MWD cycle to get to 75% (warpable) speed quickly and whilst cloaked. You will also perform most of your aligning under the cloak.
1. You jump into a system and ind yourseld in a camp 2. Align to your out gate (or whatever) 3. Hit your MWD 4. Hit your improved cloak 5. When the MWD cycle has passed half way and you are aligned deactivate your cloak 6. Spam warp
Note that 2-4 must be executed extremely close to each other to avoid being locked or your exact location spotted. Step 5 happens pretty quick too. Takes a bit of practice but you can get through camps easily using this.

2 light dictors double bouble cloaky. Put one on either side of the gate as he passes through. Give each of them a ceptor buddy with scram/web and good decloaking skills. Add 1 gank ship capable of defeating him.
5 people required to kill a guy who hasn't made a serious mistake and is doing his best to avoid all combat and not get ganked isn't really that unreasonable.

the trick has been around and used for years and years, it was even attempted to be fixed but just made it worse (carriers warping in 10 seconds)

lol yeah they made the cloak kill any active modules, so your mwd would instantly stop and you could instantly deactivate cloak. Insta-aligned battleships.

Rortim, are you descended from the Venus Fly Trap by any chance? The only other animal I can think of that *****es when food isn't dropped directly into it's mouth is baby birds. Congratulations I guess, you have the PvP ability of a 2 hour old Chickadee. Your momma would be so very proud.

Actually it's safer to first hit Cloak and then MWD (Yes you can still activate MWD for a second or so after activating cloack, try it somewhere safe if you don't believe me)
This negates the sig bloom from MWD + any slight lag issue's.
