Recently I heard a interesting little thing about Star trek. The guy goes "Star trek was like a hospital" He later went on to explain about Star Trek having this everything is clean and tidy the story is all clean. the Shows are all clean nothing unexpected happens EVER.
And you know what he was damn right. God Trek was predictable. I puts a re-run on sky and it was so dull. Then i came to the horrible conclusion. I have the same feelings when I think of eve. I've played a long long time and had many brakes and tried lots of things. But in the end its dull.
Let me build on this for 2 seconds. When you log on do you ever find your self logging off having done anything you did not expect? Have you been Surprised by Eve? The game is still fun do not get me wrong but is just not Surprising any more. Every thing is clean. Every 1 knows the weakness and strength of every ship and set-up these days. You know when you join that gang what will happen. You know how alliances come and go like seasons. Things are just clean.
Not predictable but clean. You see Predictable would be a step more where everything can be perfectly predicted. At the mo everything is just known to occur in set ways.
So I say EVE has become Star Trek. Trek died on TV and EVE has taken it's place. Personally I would like things shook up a bit. Santa?

See minmatar ships, they are coated in dirt and duct tape.
As for lack of surprises.
In one day of low sec pirating....
My corp mate killed a freighter solo.
I snagged a cov-ops cloak fitted falcon, killed it and the pod.
And I destroyed the single worst fit I've put a pulse laser to.
I was surprised at every instance.

Eve is like a box of chocolates...
Sure you can read the labels and know what to expect... but is knowing what a chocolate covered machariel should taste like the same as actually biting into one? |

Startrek Online has random pickup groups and give you a notification on fleet fights in progress that you can join nearby your current location. Sadly, Eve is more predictable than even Startrek.

Sometimes i put a kinetic misille in my launcher and fire it against an angel NPC.
That is fun, they dont expect that. Then i log off and laugh and think i fooled around with that one

I agree with the OP totally...
This is EXACTLY why Star Trek did not do very well in the Sci-Fi Genre.
It is also why EVE Online is not a very popular MMO.

Eve has defo lost the ruff space adventure feel and progressed on to the slightly more gleaming Space empire stage.
By Kardashev scale EVE is not as refined as the federation from star trek who are much more advanced (having outlawed many techs eve civ are jst getting. + having developed the Genesis device). So give it time an soon we will have all types of perfect trekkie inspired mechanics.

played since 2003, the game I create for myself in eve never gives me the feeling the op describes, if I could give you some contructive advice try doing something you have not done before. There are lots of options, who knows you might suprise yourself on the way ;)

Well, for a bit of variety you could leave your mission-running hub, hop in a covops and see just how many systems you can visit before you get podded?
Or just hop in a covops and have a play with exploration.
Or grab a blaster thorax and if you can get a few kills with it before it pops.
Or grab a rifter and see how much trouble you can cause in lowsec/nullsec before being podded.
Y'know, just use your imagination a little.
