Played an old game by the name Deus Ex , invisable war when the openign sceen gave me this idea.
In short a Cov-ops ship fitted with a specail "probe" lanucher finds an abandoned pos, this structure haveing been negelted for more than 2 weeks has barly enought power to keep its strobe lights on let allown repell a attack.
the cov-ops decloaks and fires a Nanite probe at the pos. ( a sucessfull hit renders a silver effect on the pos's hull)
Every 5 minutes the pos takes 10% total EHP damage untill destroyed.
In the event that the owner desides he really likes his pos the standard remote hull and armor repair systems have a chance each cycle to stop the nanite attack.
In a nut shell , ability to quickly remove a clearly abandoned pos that cant be used to activly attack some one.

Can only be used when the pos is offline from no fuel. Nanites take 2 days to whittle the HP down to zero. If it goes back online, and shields come up, the nanites are removed.

what happens if you fire it onto a large pos, thats clearly wanted, and ccp do a singularity mirror and the owner is unable to reach the pos? :D
i like the idea, but i dont think it ll catch on

Abandoned POSes do need looking at. Might be nice to be able to use hacking on them. Or just reduce their HP alot so you can shoot it in a reasonable time.

if the owner wants the pos would he really leave it empty for more than 2 weeks.
and while i dont understand the term "singularity mirror", if it means that the pos is know 85 jumps away in hostile teritory hes not going to get it back anyways

Yes in some cases a highsec POS can be intentionally left empty for long periods of time. I know that one of my chars corps maintains a highsec research pos and only turns it on once every few weeks when some BPO research copying is needed.
Also, POS's can be manualyl offlined with fuel still inside, so resticting it's use to POS's that have no fuel isnt really that effective.

Think I saw this in another psot but it seems like it'd be a good balance: what if the nanite probe only removes the shields of said POS? From my brief examination of large POS stats, they all have massive amounts of shielding ( which is likely the biggest deterent to ppl shooting at offlined POSes ).
Keep it at 10% every 5 minutes would mean that most large abandoned POSes would have about 10 million hp left ( armor and structure ) after 50 minutes.
Might be a good thing to add that this is treated as an attack ( ie: Concord will not be happy if you use it on somebody's tower in hisec without a war dec ).
Not a bad idea.

Maybe simply have them fall out of orbit or something.

Edited by: Goose99 on 09/01/2011 04:50:52 Instead of some kind of overcomplicated schemes like this, might as well just drastically reduce armor and hull hp of POSes, with shield dropping once pos is offline. Never understood why this isn't the case.

The "test" server for EvE is called Singularity, basically CCP does a "mirror" of Tranquility (the live server) every few months which basically means they "copy" everything from tranquility (stuff like what skills everyone knows, sov, ect.) and transfer it to Singularity.

Good idea... hehehee... Find a derelict POS that hasn't been online for a month, and hack the control tower to re-register the entire installation in your name. Then you just load up fuel, fire it up, and take over the operation - or simply take it apart and sell it for scrap metal.
This is more than just a way to let us get rid of old POSes - it'll guarantee that there will be no need to in the first place. Finding an old POS will make a pilot scream "K-CHING!" and have dollar signs in his eyes. An old POS will vanish very, very quickly indeed.

I am afraid that would be unbalanced, it would be better if people could hack an abandoned POS, strip it of valuable materials, and that it self destructs after it has been fully stripped.
With the valuable materials being a mix of rare minerals, moon materials and any remaining POS fuel.

Remove shield from an offline pos... Just the armor and hull - makes the destruction of even a large pos easy.
