Actually, I believe that the new decade started on 2001, so this would be a new decade. It's because there is no year 0, that calendar or w/e you want to call it started with year 1, I believe.
This was the thing that historians or w/e were sort of quietly saying at the turn of 2000, that the new millenium didn't actually start until 2001.

Edited by: Florio on 01/01/2011 17:54:36 every year is the start of a new decade. who says they have to be mutually exclusive? and if we start referring to how the term decade is usually used in exclusive terms, i guess it's fair to say each decade starts with ---0 as this is what most people use and there is no scientific or a priori correct starting point.

wait, I get the logic but... question.
did 1980 not happen in the 80's? because it was part of the 70's decade?
I always assume the 80's were any year that took place...well... in the 80's...

Then why did we celebrate the end and beginning of the millennia at the 1999/2000 mark?

Because there are the unwashed masses who celebrate things normally.
Then there are nerds who just want to look clever and superior so argue to everyone that a decade starts at 1 rather than 0.

There is also a language difference. The 19th century is for example called "the 1800-age" (not a perfect translation but you get the idea) where I live.

Its only called 19th cenury because rather than call the 0-99 AD period the 0th century, they called it the first. And after that it has forever irritated school children on tests.
Edit: Did 0 exist as a number at time of creation of this term? Curious.
