Just on a general point, I've always really admired the naming in EVE, it must have been an enormous task for someone or a small team, and they did a fantastic job in creating a bunch of evocative yet very culturally-different-feeling names for the systems in the various regions.
The great number and variety of names for the various systems (and ships, etc.) plays not a small part in the overall immersive feel of EVE, I think. Mucho kudos to whoever was responsible.
(And thanks to whoever linked the Old Man Star story back up the thread - what a great little classic s-f story!)
That said, my vote for the OP goes to Arshat

being English born and bred, then moving to Massachusetts I find old English named towns that are geographically connected brain bustin!
anyway there are too many silly system names to be the result of random selection.
who named them all CCP? was it one person or a panel?

Wrong, Caldari system names are based on Japanese words (that don't really make much sense as system names), and in the case of Jita it is ' (n) (1) oneself and others; (2) transitive and intransitive'.

Actually you're wrong there. "Eystur" is a gibberish word that is half-based on the Icelandic word for the direction "East", but more likely is influenced by Norse mythology, where there are four dwarves named after each of the cardinal directions. Someone who is more likely to shout "ODIN!" at random intervals could propably tell you more about this than I can.
The naughty word you are thinking of, however, is Eista (for the singular) or Eistu (for the... uhm, plural). There's not supposed to be an "r" at the end.
My contribution to the thread topic is the system "Brundakur". It's an Icelandic word, the first half (brund) referring to "male baby-making juice", and the second half to an acre or a field. Nice visual image that this word gives to the reader, doesn't it? |

It's based on pushrod technology which is inefficient by nature. Chevy is still insisting on holding onto pushrod engine technology however because they feel that using a pushrod engine in the Corvette is part of their overall brand identity. Overhead cam engines are more efficient and more refined overall, however.
More on topic, however, I've always been a fan of 0SHT, EW0K, I-8D0G, and Arshat.

"Gammel" is not commonly used as a standalone word in German.
it is commonly used:
as an adjective: "vergammelt" - rotten/spoiled (food)
as a verb: "vergammeln" - to go bad (food)
as a verb: "gammeln" - to laze (accd to Duden: orginally "to grow old") / "rumgammeln" - to laze about
as a noun: "Gammler" - bum (the person, not the body part), also used in the 60s/70s to describe members of any of the "undesirable" alternative subcultures.
and of course everybody's favorite:
"Gammelfleisch" - rotten meat (commonly used in the media when referring to various scandals rgd rotten meat getting relabeled and sold).
But I have never encountered "Gammel" itself being used as a noun. |
