I'm just curious as to the reasons behind mission grinding for those players who elect to spend a majority of their game time doing so.

Like Chesty, i do it when theres something else to be done also, i dont have to watch my back like i do in low sec or a WH, i did it once for corp standings, i couldnt really do it all day everyday though, its very boring, best done semi afk.

For isk, why else? Some intensive mission grinding - enough isk to buy a supercarrier or two.

Standings. I am trying to get 5+ faction unbonused standings with Gallente and Minmatar right now, SSoE slowly coming as a bonus. LPs come as a bonus. Just yesterday I realized I had over 500K LP points (added up for more corps) so went ahead and bought some faction items just for the pimpin' pleasure. I also have quite some faction items obtained from ratting so where else would I use the mods except for mission running? Also, with the Noctis I (re)developed a taste for salvaging. To my surprise, looting+salvaging brings many a nice mods for sale. The rest is pretty worthless but they will be melted and used for some basic ship manufacturing. Not until they pile up to the amount that would fill a freighter :) (plan stands currently at 11%). ...gis sdrawkcaB |

A lot of missioners use missions as a means to fund their pvp activities. Pvp is good fun but you need to be able to afford the ships in the first place and like someone else mentioned. Missions are a place to relax if you have been in low sec or null sec.

To get enough Isk so that you don't have to grind missions anymore.

ding ding I wouldn't be flying shiny T3 in PVP if I didn't grind missions for ISK in downtime. I have a crazy tanked, moderate DPS ship I don't have to really worry about once webby frigs are dead. Just surf the web and talk on TS, while switching targets and pressing F1 every few seconds. I bought PLEX once but felt kind of dirty. sure an hour or two of IRL work for 700-800mil sounds nice, but unless i'm in dire need of instant funding, i'll just do it the in game way. |

Edited by: Lyris Nairn on 03/01/2011 21:39:52 The reason I'm getting from a lot of people is "for ISK," but there exist other forms of making ISK which do not require hours of grinding a repetitive task the way you do repetitive tasks in a real life job. Datacores, planetary interaction, production, scamming, theft, trading, and a lot of other things exist that have a much higher effort-to-reward ratio, but these things are pursued with much less frequency than are NPC missions. Why? Why choose the one avenue that's the most grind-intensive? Do you guys just enjoy grinding?

I prefer grinding missions that doign planetary stuff, which is about as exciting as watching water freeze. I don't scam, hate scammers and theives, so don't partake in that aspect of EVE life. Trading is above my ability to comprehend. I am a solid foot soldier and I like to fly different ships and do different missions for different factions. And make isk, of course.

As a trader, I like it when I pay lower fees where I trade. Good standings helps there, and missioning helps my standings. The ISK, salvage, loot, and LPs don't hurt either. And after an hour playing with spreadsheets and setting up trades, a little "blow'n up stuff" lessens the chance of suicide. |

Grinding missions is the quickest way to get a substantial amount of Isk for a relatively inexperienced player.
Once I got an Isk stash, I branched out into trading, invention, production, datacores and later PI with my production/mining/etc. alt. Trading is time consuming in that you're making a lot of runs to Jita/trade hubs and learning where the profits can be made. It is more complex and long-term oriented than mission running.
There is an amount of satisfaction from the repetition of grinding (doing missions, looting/salvaging, hauling, selling loot at market, rinse and repeat) in that you are working toward a goal, flying your ships, blowing up stuff, and getting immediate gratification by playing the game well. You fine tune your ship's setup, can afford more expensive modules, and train for better ships while increasing NPC corp and faction standing.
It's not just "grinding". It's mastering aspects of the game and enjoying your escape from RL.

Trading, datacores, production etc all require skills that you dont use in pvp. so grinding missions and doing pvp is just easy to combine, need the same skills and all. And it is pretty straight foreward, go there, shoot. collect money. No need for spreadsheets etc.

for isk. I mean I have over a billion in buy/sell orders, I just get bored about 30 seconds after opening my wallet and modifying more than 3 orders at a time. I mean I just opened it and said **** it I'll look at those later. I'd like to get out to 0.0 and do some of the whole anoms/plexing I just haven't had a lot of time lately.

I do high sec lvl4 missions for ISK + because it's atm the only way I can afford to have some fun with max pimped/expensive ships (T3, Faction/Pirate BS, Marauder). All other high sec activities (I know) are no real challenge for such a ship.
It can be kinda entertaining, especially when not run alone. But after a while even the shiniest equipment becomes boring in missons. Atm I consider faster and more interesting ways to earn ISK. -

Blowing up NPCs is the easiest form of self gratification. It was all I really did, I avoided conflict because I know if I wandered into lowsec its "destroy ship, pop pod, ***** and complain on the forums where the **** are all the targets at?". Mission grinding was the only thing I did to pass the time as skills dinged over and I am 100% bored of it, but to get involved in conflict would set back the remaining 6 month plan even longer. Right now I have zero interest in missions and EVE in general

Great way to contradict yourself in the one sentence ;)
Sure, in the long run datacores don't involve (much) grinding - just visit the agent once every few months to collect your datacores. The leadup to that is the painful part - grinding standings with corps that only have courier/mining agents.

I dare to speak for "them", but I hang around with "them" a lot, and for most of "them" that I know, mission-running is a way to make things explode without much risk to one's own ship. They're interested in a mindless activity to take their mind off the day while they chat to friends, partake in recreational drug use (e.g.: alcohol, caffeine, nicotine) and ponder what exactly makes Goons "tick".
They don't engage in industry or trading much because that requires too much thinking (spreadsheets are scary, didn't you know?)
It's not the mindless grinding that they enjoy, it's the social interaction that they can partake in due to the mindless grinding not taxing their mental faculties.

Someone at the damned door again !! Syko lets out a sigh, places his Rattler on kite with missiles targeted on a couple BS mission rats, and leaves the room. He has tiniest bit of satisfaction that something of small value will arrise out of the interuption by "un-named religious partycrashers". On his way back in, the boy tugs the legs of his pants with a muddled sentence "blurbl blurbl stinky poo blurpl". He targets another couple of BS, and attends the RL tasks at hand. He ponders the outcome of such freestyle playing if he were an integral part of a roaming fleet....... And hopes one day, in 10 years, when the boy is old enough to snap one off in the appropriate place, AND answer the door for him, he will have enough SP's and isk to relocate to 0.0 and throw it all to the wind !!

This is perhaps the single best response I could have hoped for. Thank you so much. I don't mean to say that this is what I was hoping to get so that I could gloat about being right, but it is a well-reasoned argument that actually seems to make sense. Thank you very much for writing it.
P.S.: Depending on your brand of EVE goon, we tick because of goats, ladies' bosoms, or Rifters. P.P.S.: Don't tell anyone I told you secret goon lore I don't want to get kicked out of the space guild.
