I have sent out many buddy invites to friends to try to get them to play EVE. So far, three of them have picked up the game, but I only got credit for one friend, the other two say " Active subscriber and CD Keys not eligible for 30 free day". I made a petition asking if this was just until their subscription time kicked in, and the response just basically told me what it said again, that I couldn't get the 30 free days because they chose the activate the game with a CD key.
This in addition to me not getting my special ship for buying an EVE collector's edition, and using the CD key to activate the game (You have to use the CD key when making a new account... you'd have to be crazy to sub to this game without doing the trial).
So my question is; Why all the paranoid measures when it comes to buddy program invites, and starting new accounts with CD keys? What exploit are CCP afraid of that they jip me out of the 30 days for helping recruit people to their game?
I really don't understand why this rule is in place, and I feel stupid for trying to recruit people when I get nothing back for it.

Yeah I know. I sent buddy invites out to many friends. 3 of them are playing the game. One of them just started paying monthly fees, and I got 30 days of free game time for recruiting him like I expected. The other two purchased CD keys from Steam and I get no free days because they used a CD key.

CD-key shouldn't matter. A lot of people have used the Buddy Invite + Steam offer to get a 2nd account with 51 days of playtime for the price of the Steam offer, and 30 days on their main account when the alt account subscribed. Me included.
There's never been any requirement besides the fact that the account created with the Buddy Invite has to be the one subscribing.
Are you sure your friends didn't create new accounts, instead of applying their CD-key to the trials they started with the Buddy Invites?
Here's what I and many others did when Steam ran their last offer;
1) Send a buddy invite to your email address from your main. 2) Open the link provided to create a 21-day buddy trial account. 3) Open Steam, go into the store, buy EVE for $5 4) After the checkout process is completed go to the games list, right click EVE online in the uninstalled games, and click install 5) Click through the stuff that says stuff like "3000 GB needed, 5600 GB available" 6) After clicking "next" enough times you'll get a page that offers you a button to go to the EVE online site to create an EVE account - click the button 7) After your browser opens you'll see that there are two options - either create a new account or apply the Steam credit to a trial account (i.e. NOT a paid account). Click the use existing trial account link. 8) Log in with your 21-day trial buddy account. 9) Profit.

I'm sure that they did indeed apply a CD key to their existing account to upgrade it from a trial to a full account. 100% sure of this.

When it comes to this topic, I do not feel stupid. I never recruited people to join EVE. But I guess I clicked some EVE ads on some other pages here and there. Free clicks for CCP so to say. lol

Then you should escalate the petition to a senior GM.
11/2009 I got 30 days for a Buddy Invite that was activated with a Steam CD-Key so either;
a) Your account was not credited by mistake ( this happens ) and the GM thinks it's because of a CD-Key being used. Doubtful since they sell boxed copies that will allow you to use CD-keys to upgrade accounts. b) They stealth-nerfed Steam keys cause they aren't getting any money from sales on Steam when they run the $5 offers.
In either case, you should get the 30 days, since the Buddy Program clearly states that you will, once the receiver subscribes. There's no mention that it has to happen via GTC or Credit Card.

Unfortunately, the information on the Buddy Program isn't very clear, in that it contradicts itself.
From: https://secure.eveonline.com/Marketing/Buddy/
Send an invite
You give your buddy an exclusive 21-day trial invitation to try out EVE Online with you.
They subscribe
Your buddy subscribes to a month or more of EVE Online at any point during or after their trial.
Get free game time!
You get 30 days of EVE Online game time added to your account after your friend subscribes.
If you click on Terms & Conditions: Terms and Conditions
* Each Active Subscription Account (trial accounts do not qualify for this promotion) can send Buddy Program invites * Each Active Subscription Account is restricted to 3 Buddy Program invites per month * Only accounts created through this emailed invite are valid for this offer. Be sure your friends use the invite to create their account in order for you to earn your game time when they subscribe to EVE Online * Eligible subscription activations can be funded by Credit/Debit cards, Direct Debit, WebMoney Transfer, paysafecard, ETC, PLEX, iDeal and PayPal. Payments not eligible for this offer: CD Keys, including CD Keys purchased or received from non-CCP sources and online stores such as, but not limited to: Steam Store, Direct2Drive, Gamers Gate, Impulse Driven. * Your friend must activate the free 21-day trial within 2 weeks of receiving your Buddy Program invite. * You will need to have an active account once your friend purchases an EVE Online subscription to get your 30 days. * Please note that once your friend purchases an EVE Online subscription, your 30 free days may take up to 24 hours to be applied.
Notice where I bolded the important parts that cause the confusion.
I'd also suggest getting ahold of a GM since some are getting their 30 days and others are not.

Well option B it is then.
Sometime during the last 1+ years they changed their policy.
Oh well, it's still a good program for alts and new players alike. Just tell them to use GTCs instead

Wow so I am getting cheated by the fine print? I can't believe they would do this. Such a shady thing to do on a buddy program. I will see if a GM will assist me with it, but I doubt it, since its in the rules

Your friends suck. I've sent many buddy keys out. All who have activated have done so normally and I've gotten my free month each time. |

Well I can't say I blame them for doing it, since it basically allows everyone to get 1 month for 5USD everytime Steam runs their program, or any other digital 3rd party for that matter, that pays CCP when a copy is sold, and doesn't buy for stock.
The fineprint is a bit cryptic tho, since it says CD-keys, including yadda yadda. Which I can understand since those are digital distributions, but a boxed copy of their own game? At some point CCP must have gotten the reseller price for that, no? So it shouldn't really matter to them if someone buys up x boxes when some store has a sale or is emptying stock, since they should have gotten full value from it when the store bought it.
My subscription details specify that the account was updated using a Steam CD-Key, so they do have the ability to differentiate between the keys. Which of course they need to be, in order to keep track of the special offers/items that are attached to the different versions ( InterBus shuttle, Training speed implant etc. ).
I would be a bit miffed if a friend bought a boxed version for full retail price, and I didn't get my free month for it :/

Would you be able to submit a petition under billing? Please include the following information:
The name of the account that should be receiving the 30 days of game time. The character name, or email, of the account that was activated as a buddy account.

I have a similar problem, but already placed a petition under "Trial Accounts". I hope it's not a problem.

"Hello,
The "Buddy Invitation" program is not valid with a CD-Key. We are unable to grant your account this time as the invited accounts activated using a CD-Key. If you have any further questions about this petition please reply with additional details."
Total BS. Same as before. Not going to bother recruiting anyone new to this game, what a terrible buddy program.

People were being total dbags and encouraging the use of $5 STEAM sub sales to exploit game time via buddy accounts on this forum like they owned the joint. This caused cd keys to get fixed.

Well if they turned it off because of some promotion, and the promotion is over, they need to change it back. I am really unhappy about this.

Quote: The reason your account was not awarded the free game time is because the buddy account was upgraded using a CD-Key. CD-Keys are not an allowed payment type for buddy accounts.
Same here, I've been nearly relentless with my friends telling them at every opportunity to try out EVE only to find out any rewards for my efforts are thwarted by some pathetic technicality. What was even more absurd was that my "Buddy Program" page falsely claimed I received the 30-day credit when it was actually never granted.
Thoroughly disappointed in CCP's Buddy System, leaving us with the feeling of being duped.

I think CSM is more in-game focused. For this I would be tempted to contact CCP itself as this is a customer relations issue: http://www.ccpgames.com/en/company/contact.aspx
If it's one thing I've learned from the ticketing system is that GM's are useless in 99.999% of the cases.

Can you, within the rules, send your-self a buddy invite to start an additional account, using your same name and email address etc ?
The wording is unclear to me if it is something that is -marketed- primarily to get your friends involved or if it is a policy that applies -only- to new -players- to the game, not simply to new accounts, . (Sort of like a "Back to School" sale at a retail store.. you're not required to go to school after buying the clothes at a discount even though the sale is marketed that way)
Curious.. I'm hinking about gettiing another account and wanted to confirm that (power of 2 isn't going currently and the 7 weeks would be the next best thing)

There was once a time where CD keys did work, however a bunch of d-bags abused the STEAM $5 EVE offers using the buddy system and essentially bragged about it on the forums in CCPs face and they were then "fixed"

Ok so they did the sale, good for them. But the sale is over, and it needs to go back to how it was. Not getting credit for the 30 free days because they used a CD key is ridiculous.
