Afaik, so far EVE has been the game with the most concurrent users online, logged on single server (server shard). Well, it seems we have a new champion:
Quote: Wargaming.net Developers Team is glad to announce that World of Tanks has set up the new world record for the maximum number of users playing concurrently on the same game server. The peak of 74,536 online players was recorded on January 5, 2011 by the Russian release version of World of Tanks.
I wonder when (if?) will EVE make another breakthrough... Incarna perhaps?

I don't think EVE has ever been the one with the highest PCU. That honor goes to second life. EVE's record is somewhat impressive, since we all actually interact and live in the same persistant gameworld without instancing. It shows you can create large living gameworlds and still keep the game playable, although not without issues.
I don't know why this record would be impressive for WoT's. It is my understanding that they just host small scale fps style fights with no connection to each other. I also have no idea what exactly the server does in these fights, so again hard to say if this is in any way impressive outside the popularity aspect ofcourse.

Also before anyone says it, this is on their live server not their beta server. The beta server is currently no where near this and peaked currently at just over 16,000.

WOW has 14 million kids playing, take that CCP!!
Different games, different styles, different playerbase
Doesnt matter what is happening in WOT as it isnt directly affecting EVE, sure it can steal a few players but so can any MMO.
All CCP can do is improve their game and ban botters besides most bitter vets didnt actually leave EVE for good, they left for the major reasons listed below.
1. 0.0 went from fun PVP and wars all over so dull Powerblock vs Powerblock where you have no chance unless you have a **** load of people blue
2. Supercaps being pooped out at a scary rate, to the point where 0.0 in EVE is now supercaps online
3. Botter overload making any kill somewhat worthless
I hear these three whines more than lag ragequits, fortunately the above problems are mainly in 0.0 which is reducing in pop daily anyway.

He's got you there, Arcuate.
I don't think you can really gauge the two games by PCU numbers, I mean World of Tanks has a max players per battle of something like 20-30.
To be honest I can't even see the Massively Multiplayer part of MMO in World of Tanks, they should call it Minutely Multiplayer..

I think calling world of tanks a single sharded game is a gross insult to actual single sharded games

Edited by: Don Kartel on 06/01/2011 20:13:41 I think the point is that WoT isn't single shard and but the battles are more like instances than eve battles. WoW is sharded so isn't even in the same category and no one cares about it anyway.
Also WoT must be comparable to Eve Onlines single server or they wouldn't be claiming it as the new record.

If ANYTHING CCP won't ban botters because they need as many subscribers as possible to even stand a chance of beating the record.

There is no authority they have to answer to, they can claim anything they want to grab publicity.
WoT is like Call of Duty, except your character is a tank instead of a infantry.

Eve has probably hit a max of 20-30k users online at once, you do realize that most of the players in this game use multiple characters at once?
Some players use up to 4 or 5 characters at once...

WoT isn't really an MMO now is it? It's more like a shooter you pay a subscription for. The game is also instanced, whereas EVE is not. There is only one instance of any particular solar system, whereas in WoT there's maybe hundreds of instances of the same area.
The only comparable games are the ones that also instance their worlds, but even there there's a problem. EQ2 for example supports 100 players per zone outside of cities before it instances them. City of Heroes goes up to around 128. Champions Online and Star Trek Online go up to around 50.
WoT is in a category that is very difficult to define as far as PCU goes, but i'd put it along with sharded MMO's rather than unsharded because of it's server structure, in which case it's competing with (i believe) Ragnarok Online, which has a PCU of 1.7 million.

Try 50k, and only about 20% of those are multiple accounts from the same person (iirc from a dev blog last year).

The naysayers must realize something. No game has ever taken so many players FROM eve. That is right from eve. If you play WOT you know that 3/4 of the players are eve players, and quite a LOT of them have droped most of their eve gamming.
So CCP can pay attention on why this game has attracted so much of its core clients.

Lol, I doubt it, but you can parade that as much as you want. Most Eve players do use multiple accounts, this is not news, but the # of players at one time has never gotten up to 50k, I am sure of that :P

Yes, it's over 60k, and where exactly are your statistics on multiple account usage? Because from my perspective, most people do NOT use multiple characters, very few using more than 2 at once.

I dont play wot but according to mmorpg.com it's a free to play game with an item mall. Means every bob and his dog can log in anytime without paying anything. That's different than having 60k people logged in, where everyone pays a subscription fee.

because it's a new game with some easy to access and modestly entertaining pvp...it's a good 'take a break for a little while' game. Also, being as it's in beta you get all the benefits of being subscribed for free right now
of course, the second that the game isn't free and rich idiots can throw down fistfuls of RL money to kick your ass at tanks is going to be the exact second that the game loses its quaint charm _____________________ Look down. What everyone seems to have forgotten is that WOT is nothing like EVE and therefore comparisons are utterly pointless. WOT is not a persistant world, you can only have 15 vs 15 fights which you join via a COD style lobby and there are multiple servers.
How this is impressive when comapared to EVE's single sharded, persistant universe is beyond me. 75k people in a lobby is not impressive. 75k tank drivers all zipping round in the same "space" at the same time with the ability to interact with as many people as they like without having the fights "auto-balanced" by the server would be much more so.
When that happens, then you can brag about how uber WOT is.

Looks like some discussed this already in the WOT forums with heavy resistance from the WOT fans. They are just whoring around with the word MMO in my opinion.
So now my first MMO was probably Duke Nukem 3D
it was MASSIVE (cmon, duke is massive, nobody can deny that) it was MULTIPLAYER (friend and i played it over the modem) it was ONLINE (Yeah, the modem was "online") -- please consider to visit our w-space system, cake will be served immediately. |

So if WoT is just a normal game that isn't actually a persistent world in any way, why does it charge a monthly subscription? Or, as a slightly more challenging question, how do they get away with it? Does this mean publishers will from now on charge monthly for any game with a multiplayer aspect?

Not entirely sure where you are getting your information from, but WOT isn't a monthly subscription game. According to the developers themselves it's free to play.

Oh, okay. I'm sorry, I just completely assumed it was monthly sub because of the "mmog" label. Thanks for clearing that up!

no sorry, they have it as a fact in the quarterly dev report they put out last year.
only 20% of accounts share a user.
Me and 12 people I know in real life that play eve have only one account. The only people that have more than one are forum goers *5% of the player pop* and people with no life you never see anyways.
Sorry to burst your bubble but eve is played mostly by people with a single account.
