Last night I was *****ing in the Signatures channel about the necessity of having to fly 15 jumps to split some stacks up when I was informed that it is, actually, possible to do this remotely. I'm sure this will be old news to a lot of you but for those who remained in ignorance, such as myself, this is an extremely useful feature the lack of which I have frequently heard traders complaining about.
All you need to do is right click the stack and click create contract. Go through the first page (I have only tried this with the public courier contract option) to the second page where the assets in the station will be listed with tick boxes (check boxes for Americans). Right click on your stack here and low and behold the option appears 'split stack'. Job done! Things can get a bit confusing as the assets tab does not update immediately, but what you see in the contract window is what is actually there. Once the stack has been split in the contract window it will remain split in the station even if you cancel the contract.
Now, bring on 'Where have you been living ... the Dark Ages'

Only reason I enter Jita these days. There should be some sort of ability to merge stacks remotely. Even if I have to train up a skill to do it.

And if memory serves me, a Want To Buy contract must have all the items in exactly the right sized stack, though it's been a while since I checked.

Where have you been living, the Dark Ages?
So long as we're talking about stacks, though, where's the ability to multi-split? If I've got one million unit stack and need 20 50k unit stacks, I really would like to be able to do that all at once. :(

and how about auto split when dropping a big stack of minerals on top of few empty open containers? Filling them manually one by one is soo tedious.

Well you can stack them remotely if you're willing to pay a price and take a risk.
You can place the different stacks on the market for a price, assuming they are the lowest, and very quickly buy them up. A new stack if created because it's technically new items. The small problem is you might not be the one buying the orders, and you have to pay broker and tax on them. But it works well for items out in 0.0. In Jita you have no hope of it working.
The alternative is place the highest buy order for the items and remote sell to the buy order. Risks on that are you need to place a big enough buy order to cover your own inventory, but someone could sell to the buy order. A second order WILL create a second stack so in order to prevent that you should go about 25% more then the quantity you have at that location. Of cause someone could 0.01 you and you sell to them instead. And don't forget you will be paying broker fee and taxes.
It's hardly worth it, but it you are really in need of remote stacking those are your only options.
As I write this I thought of one other, move your items to an alt open a private or corporate exchange contract for the item quantity you have at that location. Offer 1 ISK for the quantity of items you have at the station. You'll need to login as an alt and accept the contract. It should shift the items from one to the next but as the contract is an all or none item it should stack it in a single stack.
Of cause all of this is assuming each of the items is "repackaged" which requires it to be fully repaired which can not be done remotely.

While we're talking about this sort of thing, I've noticed recently that there's an asymmetry between want to buy contracts vs. want to sell: you can only specify 1 stack of each item in a want to buy contract, which is rather annoying when you need more than 2^31-1 units of trit. Is there any way round this? --- 34.4:1 mineral compression |

Why didn't you just ask? That's been a feature of contracts since they were put in Granted one that wasn't advertised very well.
I'm with everyone else though.... what I REALLY need is a way to remotely 'stack all'
