This might be a cultural thing, but 'how you doin' by means of a greeting seems a bit too forward to me. When I'm in a shop I don't wish to be asked how I am doing, couple that with the different kind of crowd at night as some other posters suggested, and you get the ignoring. I'd suggest to try a more neutral salutation, 'hello' or 'good evening' comes to mind.
I myself work part time as a mailman, and I find that greeting people with a simple 'hello' (as opposed to the nowadays very popular looking the other way) is greatly appreciated, especially by elderly people.

Well maybe it was just hyperbole but you said you felt like hurting someone when they don't say hi back to you?
.......
Maybe there is a reason they are ignoring you. If you truly feel like that then people can sense it.
That said, I don't ignore people when they say hello but at the same time I don't particularly want to engage in a conversation with the stock boy when I have to run in to get some milk. It's not high on my priority list. In and out. Fast and efficient. If that hurts someone's feelings then.. well I don't really care as that is their problem - not mine.

you might get more interaction if you don't ask it like this.

Do like where I live, raise your eyebrows, much easier and simpler than saying hi.

Just a thought to throw out there, do you have good posture? This may sound odd but posture is a huge part of the body language that dictates initial impressions. A lot of tall people tend to stoop their shoulders so they're not looking down at others, more often than not this makes them look like a despondent teenager.
A good way to test this is to open a door and stand with your spine against the spine of the door, your bum and back of your head should be touching the spine of the door.
If it feels odd to be standing up straight against the door then you need to ditch the slumped posture. To visualise the difference in 1st impressions that posture can make try imagine some marines on parade, now imagine them with slumped posture and hands in their pockets.
Just a thought

Whenever someone asks me how I'm doing I always take the time to consider how I am doing. The chance for a response usually passes before I can come up with an acceptable summary.

Edited by: Irida Mershkov on 13/01/2011 00:10:18 How ya doin sounds a bit Hollywood. That might be why.
If anyone speaks to me as a greeter in a store I will always respond back though with a good smile and hello, I've worked retail and know how it feels though.

This is exactly what I was thinking of.

I work at a grocery store stocking shelves fussing about with pallets, and have the exact same experience you have everyday at work. -----------
