Also IBC.
Its fantastic to see the forums get a much needed upgrade and the new search might put eve search out of business.
Also Stormies might look cool, but with a blaster they are only as effective as the old pic. War does not determine who is right, only who is left. |

Will the new forum support the most important feature of the old one: randomly logging people out every 60-120 seconds?
Logging in every single time I want to post is a non-negotiable part of my enjoyment of the EVE Online Forum Experience.

Is the badging permanently applied? I suspect that the badging is a "current status" thing, which means that as soon as a character ceases to be a member of the CSM, all their CSM-badged posts made while they were a member of the CSM suddenly become plain posts.

Regarding this "Threads with DEV or GM posts are highlighted by a colored badge."
Can you make these bright for threads with DEV posts we haven't read, dim for threads where we have read all DEV posts, or some other indicator?
i.e. Right now if I go read a thread highlighted red, because I want to know what the DEV has to say, and then maybe I come back in an hour and see 100 new posts. I have no idea if any of those new posts are from the DEV, further responding to whatever troll awesome idea OP came up with. Same for GM posts of course.
Also, stop locking threads after 90 days with the new forums :P I understand there's probably a very good reason for this (although I don't know what), but there are a lot of suggestions I've come across I'd rather just *bump* with my comments because I support the idea, instead of starting a new thread, but I have to start a new thread if I have something to add because it's locked! Same with several tech support issues. I hope this "feature" won't carry over at all, but if it does, consider removing it from strategic parts of the forum, such as suggestions and tech support.
Last thing, I didn't see this, but it's a pretty standard feature on a LOT of forums (pretty much every one I've used) which is, when you post, an option to email "Notify me when a reply is posted" updates. RSS feed is a HUGE step forward, but I find the email updates work better for temporarily following a topic I'm really interested in. I hope this is included.
TLDR
- Light/Dark Dev/GM badges for new/old posts
- Stop the auto locking 90 days thread thing
- Email "Notify me when a reply is posted" updates
Else, great job! and huge steps forward!

Yeah, because ASP.NET web developers know all about game development in C and Python. Then if they're not too busy they could perform brain surgery on my aunt.
I presume it's done in ASP.NET anyhow - would love a post covering more technical detail such as what solutions and components you've used to tackle the problems you faced. Would I be right in thinking you've gone down the route of ASP.NET MVC - how have you approached search, are you using basic full text indexing or are you using something such as Lucene. These things interest me.

That's another thing. I'd like to have the EVE Gate broadcasts accessible in-game. We already have a mail/notification system capable of displaying it. Make a Broadcasts tab so that people can send/receive them in-game too! That'd be nice.

edit2: Any news/details on Assembly Hall and Feature and Ideas Subforums? I thought you would at least say some words about those..
The badge shows up if a DEV or GM started a new thread or replied in one(same as it is now). You can see it in this image from the blog. CSM and ISD don't have badges in this view, but they do have a grey badge over their avatar in the thread itself when they post something.
Unfortunately, I don't have any news or details for Assembly Hall and Feature and Ideas Subforums. Definitely open to hearing what you guys have to say or ideas for features you'd find useful though..

Yeah, I hate how it logs you out every time you close the IGB.
While I remember can you test the usability with various smartphones. You can't send mails via eve gate on my 'droid, it keeps selecting the background image and won't spawn the keyboard. Oh and the "comment" link doesn't work on 'droid either.
So far have only used EVE gate while on holiday and while waiting for trains.

yes, that looks nice and promising. there are only two things i would like to comment on which you might consider:
- try to make the whole stuff vertically a bit more compact. lot's of unused space looks sleek, but results in more scrolling and worse readability. this counts especially for the channel view pages. also on the detail pages: one having a 'mobile' device or netbook with like 1024*768 screen res gets to see like two single posts before scrolling himself to death.
- if you prefer more pages with less content and therefore more page switching (like the 20 threads on the channel views where there could easely be like 30 or 40) - be sure the make the performance work so you don't have to wait to long to click and click and click and stuff. page rendering should take like less that 125 ms - under load... this does not always seem to be the case with eve gate at the moment.)
but keep up the good work. too bad you don't import the old stuff, but i guess that would be too cruel to such a nice clean sheet (until it is stained, dirty and bloody from daily use anyway within a few hours).

Also if you decide to reply to my post: Any progress on the CSM suggestion that we get to re-order the channels to our liking? It would be useful to have the 4 channels that I care about at the top with the others below it.
One last thing, Please include the title(truncated if needbe) of the last-posted-in topic next to the last post date, in order to quickly see what is being discussed in the entire forum with one view. This will help kill the dead-space between the forum title and the last post date.

I would LOVE to see corporation forums built into EVE Gate. CEO's would need to be able to set them public or corp-only, maybe even have access by standing? Directors would have moderation access to their corp's forum (making stickies, moving/deleting posts, etc).
Must say while it was expected and mentioned in the past that this was coming, I'm very excited to see it finally come to fruition.
Now with that said I have a couple things I want to add:
First, corporate forums. Yep, as my corpie posted I think they need to be added. But keep it simple, stupid. (lawl...) Only members of the corporation and view or post in it, and the CEO/Directors are given moderator access. This prevents any need to screw with the roles system or create an extra system of control on the forums themselves. Each corp forum would be automatically created upon corp creation, and deleted upon corp closing. The same system would be created for alliances with the CEO of every corp in the alliance having moderation privileges.
Corp and alliance forums would then be only shown in the list of forums for members of the appropriate corp and alliance. These corporation forums would thus allow you to provide easier communication, more avenues for spying, or providing counter espionage and it brings the social aspect of eve out of game, while keeping it connected.
Now that I got my spliel about corp forums out of the way... I have some other concerns about EVE Gate.
First and foremost, nothing should be able to be done on EVE gate that cannot be done in game. For instance, Broadcasts. At this point in time to make a broadcast you need to load a browser (either in game or out of game) and post it, pulling you AWAY from the game. This is poor design plain and simple. Second, when playing, you have no active or automatic notification of broadcasts. This is an even poorer design. It turns broadcasts into a delayed message system, which defeats the whole purpose of what I perceive the broadcast system is for, and at this point you might as well just use EVE Mail, because it actually sends a notification.
So fix that too please. Even if a broadcast is just sent via Notification to anyone who would be able to see it, it needs to be done. - Aidan Patrick |

Screenshots look good - well done CCP.
Now my question is when will CCP make EveGate as secure as the main Eve website? When I login to eveonline.com, it asks me a security question such as "type in the name of one of your characters". In EveGate you can login with the same details and see the answer to that very question.
This security question is completely redundant while EveGate doesn't have it.

Did I read this correctly? The new forum will not have any playermade posts in them when launched? So you wont bring any threads over from the old forum to the new one? Even those which arent locked?
Can you add a dislike button?
Is it possible when we have threads with multiple pages to highlight the threads page-links(The 1,2,3,..etc) in blue/red when a dev posted on that page. Often saves browsing through 10 pages of thread and ultimatly finding that the devs havent responded since the last time I checked.
Can you make notifications when a thread of mine was replied to/locked?
Can you make a list of all the threads I started?
Off-topic: Can you make eve-gate show me if I have notifications pending and not just mails?

CSM, being a gang of pathetic attention wh*res, immediately raised this issue during our briefing on the new forums in December. It's in the minutes.

Haha yes I remember this during our discussion, made me smile! And I'm happy to say the new forums still don't support this feature :p
Just another typical case of CCP devs not delivering what the players clearly want. Your spork is hanging by a thread, Alice.
Can we at least have a random chance of it happening, based on the length of the post and the ratio of new material to quoting? It would encourage conciseness and courtesy...

That does not make any sense to me.
Why throw away 8 years of topics? Why force us to search two forums when looking for information?
Heck, if I were doing this project, being able to import data from the old forum into the new one would be pretty high on my list. Lots of real-world data to test the new forum features with.
So if you're not going to do this, please explain this "technical decision" in more detail.

OK, some preliminary feedback, based on the Dev Blog, the additional screenshot and the Dev replies: 1) Function: "Dislike" button is mandatory!
2) Function: Character Approval Rating based on the average Likes/Dislikes received for his/her posts or other similar system based on direct player-to-player scoring would be good for filtering "Trolls"
3) Layout: Having an icon for "Hot topics" is mandatory!
4) Layout: CSM / ISD badges should be visually distinguishable: e.g. [CSM] and [ISD]
5) Layout: The UI looks like AJAX - if this is the case, would it be possible to have resizeable columns? As far as I see from the screenshots, the current layout wastes lots of vertical space, due to having two lines of text in some columns (like the last column).
6) Layout: Sort by columns?
7) Search: Show results "As topics" and "As posts" option is quite important, especially for the hot threads with lot of posts
8) Search: Filter by "Date / Time" (ok, ok, future version)
9) Search: Filter not only by DEV / GM, but by CSM / ISD is important
10) Function / Search: "Show posts from" should not be limited to the last 20-25 posts like it is now...
11) Function: Show forum statistics per character would be great - look at the new features of EVE-Search
12) Function: Survey Topics (every phpBB forum has it for ages) - very useful for everyone, but especially for quick'n'dirty CSM inquiries
13) Bug fix: Remembering the default character for each account is mandatory! This is buggy with the current implementation.
14) Nice to have: More emoticons
15) Nice to have: Default setting in the profile for "Preview your post"
16) Nice to have: Better layout and rendering of Numbered & Bullet lists (without the stupid empty paragraphs)
17) Nice to have: Picture / Video storage, so we don't have to rely on 3rd party services. If you check some older posts, you will see that the pictures are missing / links are broken. ___________________________________ BECKS

Looks pretty.
Assembly Hall needs at minimum a Dislike or Unsupported button, with statistics for Like/Support and Dislike/Unsupported stats summarized at the top of each thread. It is simply ridiculous to expect CSM delegates to have to count those statistics up manually, especially for active or older threads with a lot of pages. And yet, that information is necessary as part of assessing a given proposal.
I guess EVE-Search will still be a vital third party tool for searching archived forums if the new Search feature isn't going to work with all those years and years of posts. Probably be a good time to set up a category on EVElopedia for Forum Archives, so that people can create themed lists of links that provide easy access to archived threads of ongoing interest.

As things stand, there isn't a clear distinction between Assembly Hall and Features and Ideas. F&I is a sort of catch-all for whatever concept comes to mind. Jita Speakers ends up catching more serious proposals because, unlike F&I, it gets attention from the CSM and other like-minded players for bringing up at summits. Unfortunately, F&I seems to be generally ignored.
The distinction that needs to be made, in my view, is this; issues with existing game play, game balance, and game features need their own section. Ideas for content that expands on existing content in a new way, or is entirely new, needs a "new idea" section. The better discussions from these two areas should be brought to CCP and the CSM's attention, rather than simply paying attention to the one and bypassing the other.
At least, that's how it should work in my ideal little world.
Thoughts?

"Like
Each post has a Like button. This allows you to Like a post which is pretty self-explanatory! Once a post has been Liked, you'll see a running total of Likes received and also an option to Unlike if you change your mind. Underneath each poster's avatar there is a running total of the number of Likes they gave to posts and the number of Likes they have received for their posts. In the channel view you can see the total number of Likes for each thread, quickly highlighting hot topics."

Couple things:
1) "Like" needs "Dislike" to actually mean something. 2) don't call subforums "channels". There are already Channels in EVE, and having multiple things with the same name in one game proves yet again that the web devs don't play EVE. 3) "Share" was a waste of programming resources. People (you know, those who play the game, not those who are on the web team) go a long way to protect that one extra layer of anonymity between video game and internet.
All in all, I hope this makes the forums better, rather than tries to cram the EVE player base into an image that the web devs seem to have for us.

@CCP: Welcome to the 21st century!
Not importing the old forums is silly, though. Maybe leave all the 90locked posts dead if it's extra work, but all active threads have really got to be imported. It's not like it ought to be hard - just treat them as posts where the OP didn't specify any tags or anything. Surely you're not forced to tag, so leaving it blank ought to be fine. If an old post wants tags, the OP can edit them in.
A few features that'd be nice: varying the number of posts on a page, "View as one page" like Eve Search has(which I always use to find dev posts on long threads, just keep page-downing until you hit blue bars), and an option to turn off the profanity filter.
Also, very important question - is the 4000 character limit still in force? Or the ridiculously small number for sigs?

Seriously though, here is why:
At this stage it's either you have an opinion (that you like what he posted) or you have NO opinion at all. This is not the answer! WE NEED to be able to say NO, I DON'T LIKE YOUR POST.
So, please do implement a "Dislike" button , it's mandatory! (like some poster said above me , maybe even gray-out some posts that have too many dislikes! It's much better than having Like and nothing.
p.s I hate facebook -.- (this being one of the reasons, the others being the privacy concerns)

Some various thoughts and concerns:
Quote: Each post has a Share option, so you can share it to a social networking site of your choice outside of EVE Gate.
These options open up some really nasty possibilities for the metagaming types. We already have forum dumps and DDOSed voice comms etc, and now anyone who isn't careful could reveal their RL identities to the world. You can't tell me some people won't take advantage of that.
Quote: The old forum will remain on eveonline.com in an archived state for read only reference and won't be ported to the new forum. This was a technical decision and besides, we are all happy to start with a nice, clean slate on our awesome new forum.
Sorry, but that reads like a cop-out. Obviously the underlying DB structure for each set of forums may be different to some degree, but I don't see how that can't be worked around. Need a better explanation for this please; I know you can do it, there have been one or two very nice techy blogs lately.
Quote: For the ever busy amongst you, we have included a Quick Reply that will allow you to post a reply to a thread without loading a reply page with full formatting options.
Will there still be a timer of some sort preventing too many posts too quickly? If not, then this Quick Reply feature is a very bad idea. Any post made without at least some thought put into it is a bad one. For proof of this, I give you CAOD.
Quote: So now you can finally tro.. err, let the world know about your 1337 posting skillz!
Speaking of which, where is the Report button? This is the single most important feature on the existing forums; how will anything ever get moderated in the new one without it?
Quote: Each post has a Like button. This allows you to Like a post which is pretty self-explanatory!
No it's not. I don't see the point of this at all, unless it's to prevent empty +1 posts particularly in places like the Assembly Hall, in which case you should also implement a minimum character length, as many will continue to post +1s anyway.
Finally, I like my number columns right-aligned. That means fixing the Replies and Reads columns, please.

Unfortunately, I don't have any news or details for Assembly Hall and Feature and Ideas Subforums. Definitely open to hearing what you guys have to say or ideas for features you'd find useful though..
Listen, you seem nice, and these forums you've been working on look good, but this is a bit much. I mean, have you even looked at the Assembly Hall? Have you spent 3 minutes thinking about what purpose it serves (measuring support), and how it might better serve that purpose? Have you looked at various ideascale and stackexchange and other forum-type methods for crowdsourcing, discussing, and prioritizing ideas? What about previous proposals that are directly on point from the Assembly Hall and perhaps even the CSM itself?
This really shouldn't be a brand-new issue for you. If the truth is that you looked at and thought about those things, but nothing of the sort was in the budget and/or spec that your boss gave you, then fair enough. In that case, my only complaint would be that you're not allowed to come right out and say so. However, sunny naivite is hard to swallow when these issues have been so thoroughly discussed and there is literally years of feedback on the functionality of the forums.
I'm inclined to agree that there needs to be a dislike for the F&I and Assembly Hall forums. I don't really see a pressing need for it elsewhere, although there's a lot of comic potential if you allow us to dislike dev blogs or official news posts (I'm looking at you, GM Grimmi).
Also, can you sort by most liked?

Yeah, because ASP.NET web developers know all about game development in C and Python. Then if they're not too busy they could perform brain surgery on my aunt.
Fixing black ops doesn't require any programming. Just up the jump range and give them a better tank, and whatever else players who have given this way more thought than I ever could have decided. You don't have to be a programmer to adjust ship stats, you just change a number in a database. The best part is if you screw it up, you can roll it back or tone it down just as easily.

Once you go into a thread, it's all fairly straight forward. Each post shows the avatar picture, name, corporation and alliance information (if set to visible).
Why oh why oh why is this information disabled by default? I would have thought it would be something you'd switch to always on rather than deliberately keep as it is now.
It is really annoying to have to search for a character just to find out which corp/alliance they are in when the functionality is right there to tell you straight away. So why not just turn it on by default?
That is something that has frustrated me since I started using these forums all those years ago, its beyond me why you would not want to change it!

I'd go for a separate thread about those issues as the stuff that's being discussed here (like/dislike function, identity revealing via 'share' function) are more important than this.. imho.
So please give us a separate thread on the matter.. probably best placed in either F&I or AH themselves.

Improvement is always welcome. Some questions:
- Will forum threads have permanent URLs?
- Will new forum threads have identifiable threadIDs like current forum threads? (e.g., this one being threadID=1447090).
- Will the new threadIDs collide with existing threadIDs?
- Will those people who prefer larger typefaces be able to enlarge the text on the forum pages without simply enlarging the whole page? The sample images show small text.
- It will still have the settings, but will the new forum actually save my choices for "view images" and "view signatures" from one session to the next? The old one certainly doesn't.

That was useful for seeing whether pve, or blops, or enemies or commercial groups were on. I don't rank people 1-10. Corps and people with pos/hangars do that. If you could re-implement custom groups/folders in spacebook, it would be almost half as useful.

The new forums look awesome but I do have a few suggestions (many of which have already been mentioned)...
- Along with the Like button there should be a Dislike button. Same in Assembly Hall & Jita - Supported/Not Supported.
- Colored text.
- Options to set number of threads/posts shown per page.
- In the editor - a text size option.
- In the user settings - a text size option.
- An option to set the shown date/time to your region as well as set it to military time or 12-hour time.
- Longer character limit for posts.
- An option to receive emails when a reply is posted to the thread and a time interval for those emails - i.e. immediately, once per hour, once per day, etc.
- More Smilies - there are thousands of them out there, some really good ones, but don't just add some for the sake of adding some. Be selective and add some of the best.
That's all that I can think of atm but I would like to add... HOORAY FOR NO MORE TIMEOUTS!!!!! (This is a perfect example for the need for more Smilies - there are dozens of them out there that would illustrate that Hooray much better.)

So Eve Gate was an complete failure with very few actually using it after the buzz went away. Is this a way to hopefully make is useful again and thus justify the ridiculous reason for making it the default page in the in-game browser.
PS: Please add ability to block/ignore individuals, too many spammers around that add little of value and moderation can't solve it as they are not technically breaking any rules.

I think it would be cool to have a public social website on evegate where all you do is search their name, and you can see all of their wall and whatnot. Way to Publicly come out, and criticize or publicly comment on someone in a positive manor(like thank them for hauling, building something, teaching you something or helping with a hard mission, complex or giving advice to a new player or buying them their first drake or whatever). I like getting e-mails, and the negative personal standings from people for killing them and everything. But publicly it would be a lot more fun :) Plus for corp theft, bragging about something, and all that fun stuff.

How hard is it to have a stylesheet option that lets you control font size these days.

Here's a quick list of problems
- Eve Gate displays 4 new messages, when going to the messages there are no new messages displayed.
- Eve Gate lacks the ability to add mailing lists
- Once you open a message there is no way to go to the next or previous message, basic functionality you would expect to find in a mail client.

There's ONE thing that EVERY other forum around has and EVE's hasn't - polls. And the search function - can we also search for just thread names?
It's still not up to old - let alone modern - standards even though it looks prettier now.
