It's about people flying around and suicide-ganking every Hulk/other mining ship they can find.

Hulkageddon is a player made, player sponsored event.
The gist of it is; - Players are encouraged to go out and kill as many mining barges/exhumers/industrial ships as possible in whatever way they deem fit (usually by suicide ganking). - Prizes are given out to those that kill the most of a certain type of ship and/or do the deed in a certain way (ex. killing a Retriever in smartbomb-fitted battleship).
If you are a miner/industrialist then yes, you should be a bit vigilant.
Pro-tips for Hulkageddon: - don't mine in a ship that you cannot easily replace (i.e. put away that Mackinaw and use a Retriever instead). - don't mine in a ship that isn't "buffer tanked" (you want to have enough EHP (effective hit points) to survive a sudden barrage of damage before CONCORD arrives). - don't transport large amounts of materials without a scout and/or escort. - use the event to your advantage. Stockpile materials and build stuff for gankers so they can take out the "competition" for you. _______________________

Hulkageddon is a contest a bunch of players cooked up.
The objective is to try and destroy as many Exhumers/Mining Barges as possible. Whoever kills the most wins the grand prize. There are other smaller prizes that could be won. The contest is open to everyone.
Once the contest starts, over the course of a few weeks a bunch of guys run around eve and try suicide ganking as many Barges as possible. This is in addition to the people who suicide gank barges as a life style choice, So you can expect a noticeable increase in your odds of getting suicide ganked.
I'd be careful, but don't be afraid to undock.
Here's a link to the previous Hulkageddon.
What's it all about? Same thing as everything else in eve. Getting your jollies even if you have to repeatedly kill someone to get them. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

You are safer... never safe. Not even in 1.0 space.

Well, the idea is to make yourself as "unattractive" as possible to discourage a gank in the first place (by putting your EHP as high as possible). But yes, provided you can survive 5 to 10 seconds of high DPS, CONCORD will come to save the day.

oh and its just mining ships and industrial? what about a mining cruiser? can it be any ship with mining lasers?
Dunno... but I assume that any ship that mines is fair game. _______________________

Hulkageddon Thread
Helicity Boson is the sponsor of the event.
Note that it is in the Crime & Punishment Forum (which is largely the Crime Forum ...).
This is a good forum to periodically monitor for such things.
One thing they did last time - was to create a channel used by their scouts to post targets they'd found. Monitoring that channel is also a good idea - though no guarantee that just because you don't see your system mentioned that you aren't about to be attacked.
And ... for you miners ... think of it this way ... the more ships that get blown up - the more demand there will be for your ore.
It's not a disaster - it's an opportunity!

Well... 5 to 10 seconds before CONCORD shows up... the incoming DPS depends entirely on what is shooting you and how many.
The really get a "feel" for how much it takes to gank a barge I recommend that you go and do it yourself (get a Thrasher and fit it with 280mm artillery guns, gyrostabilizers and tracking enhancers in the lows, and sensor boosters in the mids). See how far you get the ship into structure. _______________________

It's funny that the ships all these players are flying, are constructed from the materials the miners are mining.

If someone suicide ganks you in 1.0 system I believe they can be banned, especially for can flipping new players and stuff like that.

Starter systems, not 1.0. (All the starter systems are 1.0)
And I don't believe suicide ganking is covered, can baiting is. Not sure if can flipping is, but with the recent changes in Eve there seems to be more hand holding so I wouldn't be surprised

OK ...
To address a couple of things.
1) Starter Systems are those systems in which characters are first created. Duripant is an example. There are 3 for each faction. This does NOT include the school system - such as Couster. If you go picking on the nubs in a starter system ... and someone reports you - you might have something done to you. Can Flipping or Baiting ... or both ... is one such thing. Can Flipping being where they take your ore and move it to one of their cans - giving you the chance to shoot at them - which gives them the chance to shoot back. Can Baiting, iirc, is labeling a can "Free Stuff for Noobs" then blowing up the Noob that takes from it. CCP quite understandably doesn't want their new customers driven from the game by constantly getting blown up their first few days - so pick on nubs in starter systems at your own risk. Of course ... they've got nubs in those systems getting themselves introduced to Concord - all on their own but I doubt anythings going to be done to them. "Don't do it ..." I said to the nub targeting me with his rookie ship ... but he did ... and WHOOSH-BLAM!! this giant blue flash roars over my head and insta-pops said rookie ... in half a second.
2) Now - that brings us to Suicide Ganking in 1.0. How do they do that when Concord responds so fast? It's called an Alpha. Now - this term is badly misused - what an Alpha actually is - is your first volley of fire for all your weapons. That's what the word Alpha means is - first, from Alpha being the first letter of the Greek Alphabet. The way Concord works is - it won't show up until they do something. Thus - targeting you - won't bring a response. They have to actually shoot at you. Here - what the suicide gankers do - is to try and come up with an Alpha Strike - that is powerful enough to blow you up by itself - since Concord isn't going to let them get off a Beta Strike in 1.0. Now ... if you can survive one ship, even a battleships Alpha - they bring more than one. Each ship they attack you with - gets it's Alpha in - and then blows up at the hands of Concord. In organizing their strike - they have scouts evaluate the target and try to figure out - how many ships they are going to need to blow it up with Alphas.
Now ... there seem to be two types of ganks. For fun and for profit. A fun gank - can be anything, any time, anywhere. They're attacking you just for the fun of blowing you up - and - for managing to blow you up despite Concord. Hulkaggedon is one big Fun Gank. There are prizes - and they are competing for those prizes but the fun of the whole thing is what it's all about. A Profit Gank - consists of them evaluating your modules and/or cargo and determining that whatever they lose in the deal it will be more than made up for by what they can loot from your wreck. Here - they have to take into consideration the randomness of what drops. There is no guarantee that any one particular thing you have is going to be part of the loot. So - if they're going to lose a lot of ships to pop you ... they want to be pretty sure enough will drop to make it worth while.
Now one more factor in all this - is that their ships are insured. At one point in time - because the insurance payments weren't in tune with the market value of the ships - they were actually making money off of the insurance. Some people were manufacturing ships specifically to blow them up themselves as part of an insurance fraud scheme. That has been fixed ... so ships now pay back something more in line with their market cost. Insurance or no - they still lose all their modules as insurance never covers that.

This is an opportunity to "Whitey Bulger" some of your competition. WB is/was a gangster who turned informant for the FBI. He informed on his competition in order to make his business run a bit more smoothly and profitably.
But I'm sure most miners are nice folks who wouldn't do that to a peer.
