CCP Purple Tentacle understands the attachment we have to our current portraits and has set up a database allowing access to them even after the character creation update in Incursion 1.1.0. Read all about the Portrait Preservation Project in his latest dev blog.

Nice.
On an unrelated tangent (since I think CCP is more likely to be looking at this thread), whats the character count limit on the new forums?

Thank you very much for taking the time to preserve these. It sounds like it was a project you took on of your own accord for something that is just nice to do for us. I really appreciate it and I'm sure a lot of other people do too.
Thanks again!

Edited by: Aineko Macx on 17/01/2011 20:15:07 The existing "capture portrait" option is flawed in that it produces an overly cropped version of the portrait, unfortunately. The only way to get a full view and full res portrait capture is during character creation. So if you didn't think about print screening during that you're out of luck.
Still, a big hug for the person who put the effort into this preservation project.
EDIT: You went a bit too high with the jpg compression IMO. ________________________ CCP: Where fixing bugs is a luxury, not an obligation. |

On this server you can only retrieve portraits and can do so only in one specific size: 256x256. If you know your characterID, you can directly hit http://oldportraits.eveonline.com/Characters/{your_character_id}_256.jpg and you will get your old portrait back, like this:"

oh also, another way to get your char id if you dont desire to log into evegate for the moment, is to go and find the URL for your post history on these forums.
for example, mine is: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=bigshot&cid=731081081

You also get a pretty good character picture by screenshotting the char selection screen, best done with biggest resolution you can use.

hopefully this indicates that the release version will include the rather superb theatrical lighting options of "the old one", as yet woefully absent on Sisi
To get a reasonably large high res pic without the cropping that occurs with 'Capture Portrait' in game, check the cache\pictures\Portraits folder (under local app data\CCP\EVE... in windows) after loading the login screen. The selected character's image in the cache folder depends on screen resolution, on a 1920 x 1080 24" monitor, the image is 764 x 764, & uncropped. Select each character in turn to get good images of all three.

Thank you,
I got home from an out of town trip with only 1 hour and 25 minutes to spare and made nice high res copies of my 12 charaters.. I never knew there was so much detail in the old pictures that I could never see in the thumb nails in game.
I might need to make a nice montage of them printed up 9 inch by 9 inch.
Your words were also very gracious about the sentimental value the pictures meant to us. I think you really touched on a key element of the pictures.. WE look at our own picture while we play a given charater.. other players picutres meant little to me,..........I knew them from their voices on ts and rarely saw their pictures... the expresions on my characters however had a significant impact on how I percieved them.
This chracter has a haughty and introspective look and I would take his persona even on these forums. A fatter character with a grin would feel different to me than a Dandy Caladari I had who' I'd think of a pansy not fit for more than having his nails don in a station (and he was a he lol)
I suppose as I'm being gracious I should be posting on another character lol thanks ... I should use Diomedes to gripe lol

It would be even better to allow players to still use their old portraits in-game. Most of them won't be able to re-create them in new editor because of no sufficient assets and changed base faces. Sarcasm is a useful social skill. |

Character creation crashes my client. And I don't care that it does. Which would be a problem if I wasn't planning to keep my old profile picture. I have become attached to that profile pic. It has come to represent an ever immersive fantasy of me as a space pilot in a game called eve. Forcing me to change that image of who I have come to think of as myself (in game), is extremely disturbing. I don't even like playing alts as it destroys the illusion that I have a unique identity in this game. I don't think this was thought out and I am sure that there are other players that find this move invasive. I don't remember randomly messing with players accounts in the EULA as the character creation does not effect game play.

That is absolutely AWESOME! CCP Purple Tentacle, my hat is off to you sir. I happen to like all 9 of my old portraits, but especially my main and first character whom I use on Twitter and on my blog. I already saved all of my portraits but what you did is outstanding. When I create my new ones (if I am ever able to access the character creator which isn't working for me currently), it is going to take some time getting used to the new faces. It is gonna feel like someone abducted my crew and replaced them with a bunch of impostors who don't even look like my guys.

Superior? Then why thehell can't you look under 55-90 as an Amarr? Lol superior my ass, sob had one thing eight and that was letting you actually design your own look... This new creator hemlocks every damnit moral of unique ingenuity by forcing customization options on you beforehand.
I don't want a huge bulbous nose, to look old as dirt, or have weird ass bulging eyebrow muscles. Race change please or let us ACTUALLY be able to customize our character.

How about this, dear godlike developers, in your great wisdom: give the OPTION to people to keep their old portraits (instead of offering some labyrinthine method to retrieve them that did not work for me), the OPTION to either keep or change the portraits that belong to characters we've spent years of our lives with? Have you heard of this radical concept? THE OPTION?!
I've gotten used to your dictatorial, arbitrary BS before (yeah, so much for your reputation as developers who constantly revise the game based on player inputs), but this is just too much. Why should I have to hunt down some obscure document, follow its obscure instructions (which failed), and end up with the choice of blank portraits or new portraits? I want my old portraits, DAMMIT! How hard was it to give people the OPTION?! Rocket science? Bah.
Here's a big, prolonged, heartfelt hand gesture to all of you. Enjoy your dictatorship, I'm done.

Firstly, the archive, nice idea I guess but I imagine anyone who really wanted a copy of there old selves before the clone-lift likely has one already. But hey I guess there are a few tards out there who could't figure it out or forgot before going gaga over the latest and greatest, so kudos. Who knows, maybe my house will burn down and I'll be happy it's still available some place else.
As for the new and improved... okay, nice and shiny n all, could have been a little more intuitive (ie: is there a way to manipulate the skull? Are pilots glasses really the only option for us space faring aces? Why were some of the changes so indiscernible subtle that you couldn't visibly see them?)and more options for facial hair, clothing, why no close up options for your icon with a thriving public market, a bar or with a space dock as a backdrop (like your fav ship maybe)?
I was only really becoming comfortable with the software on my third try after being DC'ed twice after over an hour of humming and hawing (choked). Another thing I would have liked to see would have been having the basic features that we used for our old look to be incorporated into the new using facial re-constructive parameters, and then we just tweeeek.
Laaastly, why couldn't we have several poses to add to our personal library so that every few days we could sign into a randomly refreshing pose and maybe even a change of clothing? Well, maybe in the future of the future eh!

Oh the humanity!
