After looking at some of the courier contracts, I'm wondering why people would execute many of these.
For instance, the best paying contract in my current region (Tash-Murkon) pays 10 million. But the collateral is 180 million. Why on earth would someone who can pull 180 go for something that will make then 10 million?
Another contract has a collateral of 80 million with a 2 million reward. I dont understand why someone able to pull in 80 million would care about busting his hump through 10 or 15 jumps of, probably dangerous, space for a reward a fraction of the collateral.
Perhaps it's the region, but this seems to be a constant theme through the different regions I've traveled through.

I regularly put up contracts from Rens to Jita for 250,000 and 250,000,000 as collateral. I once had to wait 12 hours to have someone accept it.
Every other time it was under 6 hours.
Supply and demand. There is far more demand for courier contracts than supply.

The answer is right there in your question: "MANY OF THESE". Some just don't care about collateral numbers as they are quite wealthy already... and with multitude of hauling contracts accepted there comes a multitude of small rewards in return, summing up.

If you have 180 million don't you think it's a pretty good deal to make 5% on your money for hauling some crap a few jumps? Do that a few times a night and pretty soon you've got 280 million.
Also keep in mind that the very good contracts go fast. If you're looking at courier contracts created over a couple hours ago than they've already been heavily cherry-picked.

Autopilot.
I've set many 1.1b collateral to 3m fee couriers that were accepted and finished within a couple of hours. I tried 2m once to see if it would work, and it didn't. So I guess that's the "limit" :P.

If you have a freighter and are going that way anyway a few couriers will fill up your hull at no cost or risk (unless you get ganked)
If you are doing them 1 at a time you would prolly make more missioning.
And by the way, I think you are forgetting just how annoying these sigs are. |

Kalrand, I guess you'll have to answer for yourself why you want to pay 250k to move stuff from Rens to Jita.

I'm new so sorry if I don't get this but if people are accepting 1bil collateral for a few mil reward, wouldn't it be easy to set up a suicide gank squad for a contract that you put out and stop them from getting to their destination for a quick billion?

I bet nobody ever thought of that one before
The thing is that since they can look inside the courier contract (and suic gank contract items are usually rather obvious), most people who do couriers often will try and move the scam items a different way (recontract, give to an alt to move, etc) so unless the guy is really new, this won't work.
Another popular scam is setting the destination to a station that lets nobody dock.

Although lately I've just been hauling my own to expedite delivery, I used to rely heavily on courier contracts between hubs. I would generally break my items up into contracts of 1b collateral (1-3 at a time), and every time a contract was accepted I would put the next round of contracts at a lower price. Sure 1m is nothing to me, but I might as well get the best value I can.
In the end I would routinely put up 1b collateral contracts between Rens and Jita (28 jumps or something like that) with rewards of 75k and have then completed within a day.

I cant believe pilots would accept that low of a reward. I wouldnt touch it. Too much risk, 0 reward. Who gets the collateral if the pilot gets ganked?

I'm sure it's been done to death. Assuming the 1Bil collateral is way over the value of the items being transported why would it matter what the items are? Or are most items being transported worth at least the collateral if not a bit more?

Because if the items are worthless (a popular one is cap booster charges), your target knows he will be ganked if he leaves w a courier on the hold, If they are not worthless and worth around what the collateral is, then you don't make that much, and with a freighter you gotta count the value of the suic ships.
Also a lot of people accept with a different character than that which makes the transporting to avoid this sort of thing.
And by the way, I think you are forgetting just how annoying these sigs are. |

Could make for some fun lolz though if you accept it with the high collateral, knowing they are coming to gank you just so you can evade them and taunt them :).
Yes im bored.

id happily go up to 15 jumps for a few mill, it might not seem like much but you can often get several going to the same place, also when they are 3m and up you dont have to do many a day to get an ok income...lets face it, you moving stuff from one place to another, its not like it deserves huge rewards :P
HOWEVER, iv been looking at tehm recently too and I can belive what ppl expect. IE i saw one contract to move 930m3 (requires freighter lvl 5!!) 25 jumps (takes ages in a freighter) for a reward that was under 1mill!!! It wasnt a scam as it was all high sec, i think the collateral was about 800mill or something.
what idiot expects ppl to do that for them?

The "idiots" who get those accepted and finished within a day.
As long as there are people willing to haul for pocket change, I don't see any reason for paying more. If you want to make your business hauling, you will have to offer something I can't get from the public. ---

10 mill reward for a courrier is excellent pay for up to 20 jumps or more. In reality going by a standard rate of 100k per jump a 10 mill reward actually should suffice for up to a 100 jumps.

You must be a hauler. No one pays 100k a jump on a public contract.

Courier contracts are one of the easiest way to make money while completely afk if the contract is legit and the route is highsec.

Like all highly macroable activities, mining, PI, hauling isn't too good for pay.
