I find that the variety of ways you can create the character seems to be lacking though. It appears that certain facial and body types are limited to the faction you use, which kind of makes it appear as if everyone's been inbreeding as the facial structures are not very varied.
One of my biggest gripes is the lighting for the final camera shots. Way too many shadows that end up making eyes look squinted or just overall weird when trying to get a good closeup shot of your avatar's face. I almost prefer the design mode view, take a snapshot of THAT and use it as my avatar's image. The lighting for the design view is almost perfect IMO.
I noticed that when I use makeup (had half opacity even) it ends up making the pictures for the avatar very different than when I look at the character in design mode. Because the pictures don't show enough detail, it makes it very difficult to find a good medium without your character looking like a freak (on a closeup).
Clothing is extremely limited and tops, bottoms, or boots don't even match. So there's no way to create a decent looking character.
Whoever designed the makeup styles... man I'd hate to see that person in real life. Those are some of the crappiest lipstick patterns EVAR!
Hair color options are very limited. Not very easy to make a hair style with bright colors such as lime green or other things to create a punk look.
Some of the hair styles just don't work well for the photo of the avatar. There are 4 styles that pretty much look similar when taking a proper photo: 1. Ponytail short 2. Ponytail long 3. Bun 4. Roll/Hair Tuck
There's no way to determine the difference in hair styles unless you do a 1/3 angle shot.
Facial expressions themselves are completely missing. Half the time when you try to make a character smile they end up looking angry or confused. It'd be nice to have a feature where you press buttons to go through several facial features; Angry, blowing a kiss, winking an eye, surprise, etc. The facial rigs seem to be there for it, so why wasn't it included?
The characters sure look more detailed in the character editor, but the portraits themselves for the game, in a way, haven't really improved much since you can't see any detail anyways. I'd love to see the ability to info a character and see a decent, good, large portrait. If you look at CCP StievieSG's image for example, the shot is way too small to see any detail and I bet if you lined up different characters in the same pose they'd look the same even though up close they're fundamentally different. I can't see makeup, or lipstick in his shot... so I'd say that the current portraits are very limiting.
Overall a good start... but that's all it appears to be, a good start. Just a shame it was released too early because it is missing a lot of good features.
Interestingly enough, speaking of early release... I'm working with a Gallente Jinmei Female and the eyelashes aren't on the eye-lids... they're disconnected and appear to be sitting on her eye's instead. And speaking of eyelashes... why does the guy get the eyelash thickness feature but the girls don't???
The eyeball's sclera is way too gray as well.
