Have tried different shader, LOD, other settings.. rebooted, reinstalled, relogged, repaired, anything I could think of... Creator still runs up to 100% (or maybe 99.99??) and hangs.. have waited up to hour and a half, just in case it was volume of users and was running slow, but no go..

I am having the same issue. Very annoying to be told you have a new toy to play with but you can't open the box that it is in.

I sorted it out but I was dead lucky. The character Creator seemed to sit and be loading for ages so I pressed escape and left it there. Eventually the log off screen came up and I closed window and there was my toon ready to be messed up. Hope that works for some of you. I have managed to do something with 2 out of 4 so far but it's a long process.

I'm having the same issue, I can bypass it, play eve just fine, look at others avatars, but can't create my own. I figure it has something to do with the PC hardware as I've changed every setting one at a time, cleared cache, reinstalled, nada.

Same here, it just hangs on loading screen. when running on:
Windows XP prof. sp2 AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2GB RAM Nvidia GF 6600GT
Will try on my other pc (intel core2, Nvidia GF-8600) and see if it works later.

Same issue. Cannot get into Character Creation mode. Just sits there after the progress bar indicates 100%. I have done everything short of rebuilding my very standrad configuration PC that has allowed me to play Eve for two years.
I do not understand what is meant by "windowed mode" in this thread.

Ruyne my alt tried playing with graphics settings set em high set em low windowed full screen different resolutions. I even yelled at it and threatened it with a fork. Now the second account Zasx is slightly different. Different os and chipset video card etc. Zasx is letting me see after a long wait what I am going to look like. Then I go over to the portrait screen and it just sits on the little please wait roundy loading bar thing forever. I only played with it for 4 hours before becoming completely frustrated. I am not buying two new computers and yes they are both soec2 or whatever it is. I am not impressed hope this gets fixed soon and doesn't bone me out of anything.

Hit escape (esc key), go to a menu for the display (far left I think), option should be middle left of the screen.
Once in windowed mode you should see a bar at the top of the screen. Can't miss it, but it may (or may not) look different depending on your version of windows.

dudes, there are at least three threads about this issue. plz read before you post.
updating your videocard driver does the trick for most people. it doesn't matter that you can log into the game normally. the char creator is a different section and requires the latest GFX update. hopefully this'll solve your problems.

I have the same problem and my drivers are updated as a matter of fact I never allow my drivers to be out of date. There's nothing wrong on our end this is ccp's fault. If I get locked out of eve cuz of this I will really be bummed especially seeing I JUST returned to the game, I don't care if ccp has to randomize my portrait, I just hope they don't lock me out of game. Btw guys people keep reposting about this because ccp is completely ignoring our petitions.. And threads like this are going no where or being lost in a wall of complaints from others, this needs to be fixed ASAP.

Edited by: Dani WH on 20/01/2011 13:24:32 You guys need a graphics card that supports Shader Model 3.0
in example I have a FX5200 and only supports 2.0 or lower. I can view others characters but can't create my one, the screen appears black.
A nvidia 6200 or an ATI x500/x800 and further models support it, they are low-end cards released around year 2005.
google your card model and find if it supports SM 3.0, if not you need to buy a new one to use the new character creator.
If you can't afford one or dont want to spend money, I suggest you borrow a modern computer from a friend and design your characters, then you will be able to play on your regular computer as you have been until now. But remember that next expansion will bring Walking in Stations, and then a modern graphhics card will be MANDATORY.

Absolutely same problem here the creator runs up to 100 % and then nothing happens.
I see the the race selection dialogues if creating new one on a free lot then it will freeze as well. Pod |

So, it looks like the Shader Model 3 is the problem, as stated above.
Here's a list of older Nvidia GPU's that support it.
Desktop GPUs NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS NVIDIA GeForce 6800 NVIDIA GeForce 6800 XT NVIDIA GeForce 6800 LE NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT NVIDIA GeForce 6600 NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE Notebook GPUs NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800 GTX
The issue is most non gaming laptops that are over a year or two older will not support Shader Model 3, I run eve on my laptop for now since my motherboard fried. It would be nice if say high shaders = 3.0 and low = 2.0, then we could use the char creator and in the future walking around in stations.

I'm currently using the 6200 card on my pc (just so I don't get flamed I'll point out I'm on vacation and my normal pc is much better) though as you can see the 6200 card supports sharer model 3.0, leading me to the 10x over repeated conclusion that this is not my pc's fault.

Trying to see if there's any correlation between older 128MB SM3.0 cards (Nvidia 6 & 7 series) and the client hanging with a progress circle when trying to take potraits. Do post confirmation if your card matches the description.

I don't even get a hang - mine goes right to blue screen then reboot. I have an older Alienware Aurora M9700 with the dual 7900 GS. Character Creator bar starts to load then Blue Screen followed by restart. I'd love to update drivers except that manufacturers like Alienware do not give driver support for laptops after a year or so.

Yes some communication from CCP (either "We're working on it don't worry" or "Frack off & play something else you're wasting our time") would be nice.
Personally I don't think CCP know what the problem is & they won't admit it. They're probably just hoping we waste our time / hard earned RL money on messing around with updates & setting / buying new hardware or quit & leave them alone. [Sarcasm alert] Obviously having a nice new picture & being able to walk about in stations is going to bring in sooooo many new players they probably don't care about losing a fair few subscribers.
I hope I'm wrong on this! |

Edited by: Rhok Relztem on 24/01/2011 18:39:57 This is really bad folks. I don't think CCP knows or cares what the problem is, or they know but aren't saying anything because it is in the same category as the SSE2 crap (in other words, this requires newer hardware and some of you are just sh*t-out-of-luck). I petitioned this to Tech Support and their reply was that the problem is due to my Intel chipset in my laptop, and then they gave me a list of suggestions to try that are nothing more than workarounds that we have found and posted here in the forums. I've tried everything suggested from them and everything I could find here in the forums to no avail.
I started a thread over in General Discussion - Non-Portraits Unite! (can't access Character Creation) - a few days ago (for some reason they have not moved it here like they did with this thread). There are a lot of other suggestions in that thread that some of you might want to try. Maybe you'll be luckier than I am.

I'm having this problem, have petitioned it. Have tried the above workarounds without success.
I'm actually ok with it being a shadow avatar(s) until I read the part about people who haven't created them being locked out of the game at some point.
That's about the most ******ed thing I've ever heard. If I do get locked out without them ever acknowleding this issue, I'm sure I can devote my former eve play time to creating a new site detailing all the reasons the game I used to play now sucks. Pretty sure my computer will work for that.

I wasnt able to get into the character creator at all for a few days on my laptops which are 3-4 years old - 2.16Ghz intels, 2GB RAM, 256 Mb GeForce Go 7900 GS and 512Mb Qudro FX 1500M - it always hung at 100% on the 'Entering Character Creator' for a long time going no where.
Then I changed to window mode and dropped all the shader, texture etc settings to Low. After doing that it went in staight away with no problem.
A friend has a new laptop (about 12 mths old) which is a decent spec, 512Mb graphics card (I dont know the exact model but he plays eve on high settings without a problem) and he couldnt get into the character creator either in full screen mode so he had to use his older desktop PC which went in fine (he didnt try windowed).
Maybe its something in the mobile chipsets causing a problem when fullscreen and high settings are being used. Kinda sucks this would stop you playing eve if they hadnt given us the option to play without making a character. |

That's a different issue then most of us are having, you have a shader 3.0 card, most of the others have an intel based graphics card and are playing off a laptop or have older video cards (my laptop is 1 year old.)

Here's something that almost worked for me, but may fully work for others. I deleted an alt then tried to make a new character and the load bar progressed past 100% and I was able to get as far as the race and gender selection. For me it crashes when the beginning the customization process. However, the fact that it even loads past the initial stage is interesting considering I can't get past the point when trying with my main.

I also have the "progress bar stops at 100%" problem. As this doesn't impact game play, I wouldn't mind waiting a while for a solution... except that apparently this will prevent me from playing after the grace period. So I'd hope CCP considers the merits of just not pressing the button until this issue is fixed.

As I get an Invalid Instruction exception when I try and run it on my system, I thought I'd try my mother-in-laws 18month old Dell Vostro 1700 (Vista, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5670, DX11, onboard Intel(R) 965 Express 384MB video). All it does is crash the display driver after opening the creator. So I'm not in the least bit impressed - seems CCP have a fundamental problem with their graphics library.. ie it'll support Nvidia cards of less than 3 years old only..

You know...
I'm noticing this trend in the chipsets not working are all onboard. Regardless of the users specs, including the fact that their onboard card is above and beyond the requirements I believe that ccp's problem is the shared memory that an onboard card uses.

Bump for an important issue. I think it's becoming painfully obvious that it isn't strictly a hardware issue

For the Intel video card people, the problem is Intel stops supporting their cards via updated drivers. You can buy a brand new notebook like an Eee PC, and the drivers will be from 2008.
It's not CCP's fault, it's Intel discontinuing support on products that are still sold.
We're pretty much screwed.

But that doesn't explain why mine doesn't work :/ I don't have an intel video card.. and I get the exact same problem.

Edited by: Barron Hammerstrike on 03/02/2011 16:38:18 I don't have an intel graphics card either and really now the issue is more about letting it be known that a lot of us (even if a statistical minority) have been hosed for no reason other than what appears to be the almighty dollar. My machine is old, I admit it, but these latest revisions are just too buggy

What video card do you have? Can convo me in game and I can help you as much as possible.
Spent allot of time talking to the GM's to find out it was intels lack of support on their drivers.

Edited by: dreada0 on 06/02/2011 12:35:44 Hi all, I have the same problem as above. Acer AspireOne D150 with the Mobile Intel 945GM chipset.
Don't most netbooks use these Mobile Intel chipsets? If that's the case, then CCP have basically locked out many netbook players with the new character selector - why didnt they include some "low graphics" option suitable for the unsupported Intel chipsets?

Intel are removing support for them, they are really poor chips even for their time and were designed to provide basic graphic support for the system for video output.
Intel are focusing on their new line the Intel 4500 and up. ------------------------------------- The system issues man. |

...Since when did people start expecting netbooks to be suitable for 3D gaming?
By the way, I managed to get through the entire character creation process on Linux after eleven hours of setup. _____________________________ ¬DesuSig |

I guess I just expected CCP to continue catering for low-end and hi-end systems; I admit I don't know how the game architecture works, but did they really need to raise the bar by that much for *everyone*, low-end and high-end players??
Anyways just came across the following, pity it was sufficienty communicated so we knew in advance.

Some of us run 3+ accounts, great when you can pay for them with ISK. Run 1-2 on your main computer, can run others on cheaper $250 laptops, this wont be the case once Incarna comes around.

I have the same issues. I did get a good response to my petition though, after the work around suggestions. They said it was under discussion and that a patch was being mooted, with a temporary solution of randomly generated avatars so we don't get locked out. My hope is that this will happen. Randomly generated toons would suit me fine, at least until a permanent fix is found, or I upgrade my hardware, something I am loathe to do currently, as my current machine runs Eve just fine.

What did you set your shared video memory (I assume it's set in the BIOS) to? Any OS and NVidia driver version info? |

Edited by: Royally on 10/02/2011 12:14:08 I'll update when i get home and can check the specifics, but I'm running windows vista and my RAM is only about 800 ish mb effective (supposedly 1 gigabyte) on an amd athlon 3500+ (so about 2.2 ghz) I did expand my virtual memory way above whats recommended, as I'm stuck with only one gig ram atm and it was an effective workaround, will update on those numbers when i'm home.
All in all, I'd say my computer system is pretty crappy to run any game thats recent, especially EVE, yet for some reason I can go with it just fine^^ (altough I do have to say I tone down my graphics)

Hi,
I got the character creation tool running with my Intel 945GM Chipset. It was a bit tricky and slow but at least I could create a new portrait.
As the Intel 945 family does not support the required shader version I was checking the web for a software simulation of the shader with DirectX. There is a solution by Transgaming, it is called SwiftShader 3. I was downloading the demo version, installed the DLL and created my portrait. Then I reinstalled the original DirectX driver back for playing.
You can find the DLL on the homepage of Transgaming www.transgaming.com.
I hope that helps.
Regards,
Goriel

Could you explain how you installed the new dll? Did you copy it to the CCP directx folder and remove the normal directx?

Yes of course. I performed following steps
1.) taking the ownership of the d3d9.dll from C:\Windows\System32, otherwise you can't touch it. 2.) renaming it to d3d9_original.dll 3.) copying the swiftshader d3d9.dll to C:\Windows\System32
My operating system is Windows 7, so I had to make sure that the security permissions were properly set.
After installing the swiftshader d3d9.dll I was starting Eve. For character creation it is recommended to set the texture and shading quality to lowest before starting. When your character creation is finished, you could simply increase the shading quality in order to make a good snapshot. It takes a lot of time for rendering with high settings.
To play Eve and flying around in space just copy the original dll back to d3d9.dll and start the game.

Thanks, that was very helpful, I understand what I'm doing now. However, I'm running into a problem with taking ownership of the original d3d9. When I try to change its name windows says I don't have permission, and when I try to change the permissions on the file it says I don't have permission to do that. How did you get around this problem? I am on an administrator account, so I should be able to do anything to the file.

Nevermind, I figured it out and that worked great... low quality shaders and all of course, but at least I have a portrait now.
