I get a black screen for Character Creation too, but if I alt-enter and go in using windowed mode, then alt-enter back out when the character creator screen is loaded, it works fine.
If all else fails, you can try a cyber-cafe or borrow a PC just to create the portrait...

The problem here is not that they shouldn't change the minimum specs over time, it is that such a small part of the game as making a f*****g portrait can make the game unplayable for you. As someone said before, they should make an "I-don't-care-gimme-a-random-portrait-and-let-me-blow-up-moar-red-boxes"-button.
I know my system isn't officially supported, but I can run the game itself without problems, so I'd really like not to get thrown off just because I can't dress up my character.
It'd be like not being able to make a Facebook-account because you don't own a digital camera for taking a profile pic.

This affects quite a number of people, including myself. Though I do enjoy the 1 month period of grace before having to forcibly go through the character creation. Since I will be canceling Eve, might as well get my last months money out of it. No point in paying for a game that the developers don't want you to play.

Maybe CCP can loan remote desktop time (VNC?) to those who can't create the new avatars right now?

I had the same issue but used reduced graphics options and windowed or fixed windo mode.. worked a treat!
