Well after upping the video card memory setting and disabling glsl to no avail I finally broke down and bought a new video card to upgrade somewhat from my good old NVidia GeForce 7900GS 256MB DDR3. I've updated the NVidia drivers from their site to 256.53. So now I have a new GeForce 210 with 1024MB DDR2 instead of DDR3 so I think that should be good enough.
I log in and what do I see after entering the character creation screen? The Gimp! He's still there and I'm very afraid.
The Gimp Gimp up close - scary white eye too.
Running Ubuntu 10.04, Wine 1.3.11. Here's what's in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D: DirectDrawRenderer: opengl OffscreentRenderingMode: backbuffer UseGLSL: disabled VideoMemorySize: 1024
Please help me make the gimp go away.

Using a gtx260 maxcore over here. No issues with any of that. These are the settings I'm using in user.reg:
[Software\\Direct3d] "DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl" "MaxFragmentUniforms"="1024" "MaxVaryings"="52" "MaxVertexUniforms"="1024" "OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo" "PixelShaderMode"="enabled" "VertexShaderMode"="enabled" "VideoMemorySize"="896" ------change this amount to whatever your card rates at.---------
I haven't had to disable glsl at all.
Using Arch 64 + wine 1.3.11-2

Thanks Sevarus, I copied your settings and it made the gimp go away. I ended up with the eyeballs and teeth floating to the right side in the air issue but that was remedied as suggested in other posts by disabling glsl - perhaps a Ubuntu thing - I don't know.
So glad that I can finally get past this, thanks again.

Notta problem. But what strikes me as odd is that ubuntu's implementation of wine is doing that...or perhaps its the test version of wine your using. or...it's just damn odd that one distro is having reproducible gfx issues, and another isn't with the same version of wine.
As I posted, I haven't disabled anything, and although FPS isn't as good as I'd like it (native win7 is double wine's for EVE at this point on my rig), its very playable and no gfx issues at all that I can find.

I had the floating eyes as well and I'm running debian sid. It may have something to do with the opengl libs/dependences in the debian base. I know at least in debian sid the newer 260.x video drivers are only in experimental and I'm running the 195.36.31 drivers from sid.
I am planing on installing the newer drivers (I just haven't yet due to instable issues I was reading about). For the most part I can fix floating eyeballs, with the disabled glsl. Though I still have a few issues.
1) I cannot see the eyes, so as I change the eye type I see no difference as the eyeballs are not rendering right. 2) Certain longer hair types only the base and the shadow render, but the actual hair does not render. 3) With shaders on high Carbon is laggy on my 9800GT with 512MB, but with shaders on low I get reasonable speed but the warning about not seeing the full quality.
I am going to install the newer nvidia drivers and see if some of these issues are fixed.

Haha, in the "you had it comin" : I just copied Sevarus James' wine settings (except for video size), launched the char creator... which jammed itself as usual... then got my Xorg dorked when I killed the EVE client ;-D
Had to reboot. Didn't like it ;)

In stalling the newer nvidia drivers from debian experimental fixed all the above issues for me. Now running off of nvidia drivers 260.19.21 and the new character creation seemed to work just fine with no more noticeable glitches.
