Is it really intended that the "combat" shortcuts only apply in "overview focus" and not in "space focus"? That's obviously silly, only time they should be disabled is in a text entry field/ chat focus as those keys are not used for anything while clicking in space (flying manually)
Furthermore, is it really intended that said combat shortcuts do *not* work on the object in the "selected target" box if nothing is clicked and instead only looks on "overview focus" and a selected target in the overview list? Seems like a really poor design decision if so.
(Switching overview tabs to a tab that doesn't show the "selected target" renders these shortcuts nonfunctional even if the object is still in the box with the mouse buttons - and their tooltips are showing said keyboard shortcuts so at least fix the tooltips)
Also, there is no bindable keyboard shortcut for "reset camera" rendering the default binding of "look at" to the ALT key rather useless. ----------

iirc if u alt click empty space it resets the camera
also the combat shotcut keys DO work in space if u use them like ctrl/shift/alt clicking
in other words hold the key down while clicking

Indeed it does, I didn't realize that. thanks for the tip.

Yes, I knew but it was not my point - my point was that they do not work on the item in the "selected item box" or even the currently highlighted overview item (which can be 2 different things) if you lost "overview focus" by, for example, manual flying (clicking in space). They do work without hold- mouseclicking as long as you have "overview focus" and your last selected target is currently visible and highlighted in the overview list.
I'm asking why this functionality was not implemented to be actually useable in combat, for example in a small scale dogfight pilots do a combination of "orbit" "keep at range" "approach" and manual clicking in space to maneuver their ship - the new combat shortcuts are practically useless for that - and the "selected item" box tooltips mislead as they show the keyboard shortcut even when they are not currently functional (no overview focus or overview tab that doesn't show the selected item) ----------

To reiterate, 2 things that look like bugs or bad design to me:
A) "Manual flying" renders combat shortcuts useless for their intended purpose, combat. (most scall scale combat uses manual flying i.e. clicking in space to move as well as the navigation commands approach, orbit etc) OR manual flying loses "overview focus" (while it wouldn¦t need to, and IMHO shouldn¦t)
B) "selected item" button tooltip error (Showing nonfunctional keyboard shortcuts even when they cannot be used OR unintended behaviour regarding overview tab switching and "combat" key shortcuts ----------

Well at least my BR was attached to a defect so CCP seems to agree it's not yet working properly. More blog news at 11. ----------

I think I know where your coming from but not clear as I had issues with these shortuct keys as well.
I have the sun on my overview and normally align to that depending on my postion on gate decloak but if I align to the sun, zoom right out and get swarmed by drones I normally switch to Drone overview to sort ECM drones, I noticed I was getting royally ****ed by faildari missiles so decided to "A" click (cant remember if its A click) but it never done anything anyways.
Is this caused by the fact its not on my drone overview?

It took me a minute to get what you're talking about, but I can think of a proper example now:
Say you're dogfighting a target. You click on him in your overlist list to lock, and then double click in space to set an approach heading. He starts getting to close, so you hit the hotkey for "keep at range," but your ship doesn't actually do anything. Instead you have to hit that hotkey and then click on his ship/name in the overview list again to actually perform the command.
I agree that's annoying as hell, and should default to the currently selected locked target. (It works that way when you use a hotkey to tell your guns to fire on something, it should work that way when you want to approach, orbit, or keep something at range.) ùùùùù

Yes, and IMHO it should be fixed.

Exactly!
Having the hold-click functionality could be handy (I guess) but for me it is definitely *secondary* functionality compared to the now broken "selected item" shortcuts. And both can obviously coexist. ----------

Edited by: StarScream Xion on 22/01/2011 11:47:07 For whatever it's worth, I agree. I don't like the current implementation of shortcut keys as it stands. In fact as it stands I find it very disappointing.

I've found you can 1. Press combat shortcut (hold it down) 2. Select object in space by simple left click -> It works fine.
I've used this frequently, just hold down the targeting shortcut, zip across your desired targets, click on each as you pass, and you've got them all targeted.

Edited by: AlastorEG on 25/01/2011 14:43:16 I also have noticed that the combination ALT+Space returns "overview focus" and keys can use for object in a window "selected item", but it's not a solution of a problem

I have the same problem. 1. Undock from station. 2. Hold down 'A' (which is set to Align To action) 3. You see message "ALIGN TO .." appears above the HUD. 4. While still holding down the key, click a stargate in the space (not on the overview window). It doesn't have to be stargate. Any object to which you can align is fine. 5. You see the "ALIGNT TO.." message disappeared. And the stargate is now on your selected item window. 6. Nothing happens. Same goes for all other combat shortcuts.
But on my macbook pro (snow leopard), it works just fine. It doens't work on Windows 7 x64 although I'm not sure if this issue because of OS

Wouldn't it be nice to have a dedicated EVE board to game with instead of the standard plug and go board?
A few cool blinkies here and there to indicate a hit or miss. When you ship blows up the whole keyboard lights up.
