Running brand new MBP 15" 2.3Ghz quad-core. I notice high fan speed and a lot of heat (which I guess isn't a problem/or at least is to be assumed). What -is- a problem for me is the complete system lockups when (1) attempting to alt-tab out of eve, (2) attempting to close eve from the escape menu and (3) randomly when sitting around mining some asteroids. Same symptoms. Screen freezes, music eventually stops and the only response I get is from the mouse which seems to work when everything else is totally locked up/broken.
I'm not interested in running Eve in bootcamp as a fix. I will likely return the MBP as I bought it for gaming when on the road (alongside my work laptop) and the other game I've been playing, Sims 3, is also flaky. I'm guessing the real issue is that Mac's aren't really gaming devices outside of the iOS realm yet. Games or H/W or OS isn't stable enough. I don't tolerate these crashes well when I spend the big bucks for a stable platform. Good news is I can return the MBP -- unless its truly an Eve problem which just makes me think that Eve considers Mac users as second rate citizens since some of the problems I cite above have been going on for 6 months on my iMac at home as well. Oh well - lesson learned. |

Eve-Online and and Sims 3 are Cider port. The Macbook can do a good job for gaming on native game but most of the current game in sale are Cider "port" sold "as native" because they use Direct3D for there gfx API.
You can always try Wine+Windows client (Wine on Linux is know to be far superior than the transgaming stuff on Linux). I don't know for the Mac stuff but program for Linux and Mac usually have more that 99% of the code in common so this is probably true on mac too. The only disadvantage with that is that Wine don't came prepackaged with the game so you may need to turn on the geek mode first.
For the overheating problem, it's normal in a cider/wine transcoded game. usually, for one CPU core, +-20% is used for the game and the rest is to transcode Direct3D+Windows call into OpenGL+OSX call. The Video card stay under-exploited because the fastest CPU is still too slow to feed the video card for his max power. (I simplified it but it's like that).

Lets not derail this thread with a diatribe about performance under Cider etc.
The fact of the matter is that in general, the Mac client is/was generally pretty stable until this last patch (issued today, Mar 8). Now its crashing every other minute and restarting new processes before the old one quits. Never had to force quit the client till today, and I'm on the 4th round of force quits now.
Something changed in the latest patch that cripples the mac client and i highly doubt it has anything to due with the cider transport

My client runs on a macbookPro and frequently ctd when jumping systems too. All graphic settings are on low(bah) and also made sure the openGL setting is off.
This is for me, as for many other players, a really bad bugg. Already had numerous close calls in pvp situations when a ctd happend.
I hope CCP will fix this soon.

For the CTD when jumping system, did you try the hosts workaround I posted in this thread?

Im not using wine and im not planning on using it anytime soon.
All settings on low does seem to lower the chance of ctd though.

Good to know. Where did you download the client? Every time I try to download it stops at 150MB or so, regardless of browser, connection speed, etc. (And BTW, my new MBP doesn't have this problem with any other file I download, including files substantially bigger than 150MB.)
Might there be a torrent somewhere?

1. I have experienced several sudden client crash since the last patch. Client just quits and is gone.
2. I've also had some issues with drones while running missions ... Drones that are killed dim in the overview but do not change to dead drone. They stay red.
3. And there have been times when i am checking sell prices on items and then attempt to move them out of hanger that the client tells me they are still "for sale".
There are obviously several issues with the latest patch that need to be fixed.
Too bad ... the client has been working pretty darn good up to this point with Incursion. Let's get it running smoothly again CCP!
NOTE: This is #3 of 3 accounts that I run on a MacPro 2.93 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 8 GB 1066 MHz DDR3, Mac OS X 10.6.6. |

Originally by: CCP Gangleri We've been working on identifying potential causes for these crash issues over the last few weeks and think we might have some solid leads, if users that are experiencing random and sudden crash to desktop could try disabling the Multithreaded GL option in the escape menu (display setup section) and then report here if that proves to be a successful workaround.
Please note that this may not cover all the different issues being reported in this thread, for an example the network issues described in the last two posts sound completely unrelated to the random CTD problem.
Multithreaded GL was never checked to begin with. Even with graphics on lowest settings, the client crashes as frequently as with high settings. For me, it is always when jumping into a system (ship successfully jumps in system and THEN the client crashes). -----------------------
I am that is. |

Editing the hosts file makes no difference for me, still randomly CTD's. All my CTD's are when entering a new system, but its completely random when it happens, I can make a 32 jump round trip and no crashes, or I can jump into a next door system and CTD.
The only thing that remains the same are the crashes happen on the client I start second, first client started 'seems' to be rock solid.

I've been getting consistent CTDs upon initiating a jump, opening the IGB, showing info, and pretty much any other action that involves clicking. Macbook 15", running on lowest settings, fullscreen, no crash report or anything, just flash bang back to the desktop.
Way to go, CCP.

Edited by: Syned Vanderog on 14/03/2011 02:36:35 Indeed, same problem after the patch on march 8th. Random quitting upon entering the system (me and my corpmate), other ppl with windows had no issue. 3hour roam gang and i had 7 crashes (corpmate 11) in total.
Porting didn't go well this time it seems.

Another post to confirm the issue, post-jump crashes happen more often now.
Not too nice, please try to fix the client for us?
Thanks,

Have to hard reboot, cannot tab out of client when it freezes. Seems random, has happened when using fitting screen, looking at items, sitting in space doing nothing, when targeting.
Estimate 1.5 crashes per hour.

Running: Mac Pro 10.6.6, 2x2.6 Quad, 8 gig ram
I have never experienced the gate crash however I can almost be guaranteed a crash and inablility to restart the client when warping onto a busy grid (2-400 in combat).
...then I switch to a MBP 10.6.6, 2.66 i7, 8G...
This also crashes, although 'feels' more stable and less crash prone. It does have the added error of the 'unhandled exception, division by zero', discussed in another thread, after it crashes.
Sadly I have lost three ships due to the crashing and am tempted (vomit) to play in W7.
Please don't make me do this.

I was in the St. Patrick's Day Slaughter yesterday in O2O, things were going well until I got the crash to desktop. EVE just ups and quits without anything going on. Of course I was hosed at that point trying to get back into a system with 1200 clients in it. I managed to get back in later during loot scooping and got my carrier out.
Go to try to log in today though and it crashes on launch, no messages, no nothing. I agree before this latest patch the client appeared rather stable (and performance ain't bad on a Mac Pro 8x2.8, 16 GB RAM, 5870 and SSD boot and app drive). Not sure what they did but it's hosing the Mac client, I'm seriously considering going Boot Camp until it gets fixed.

X up here if you tried turning off the multithreading, it didn't work, you're getting annoyed, and you want CCP to provide an update.

Yes I have found the same, crashes on jumping gates too often for comfort which now makes cta and roams difficult. I've petitioned several times and found the replies unhelpful offering no solution. Come on CCP get it together, we have invested years of time and money, don't forget that!

Edited by: Chris Sphinx on 24/03/2011 15:54:12 For those of you getting these CTDs when jumping/autopiloting, have you tried repairing your permissions?
I use Yasu by Jim Mitchell (http://jimmitchell.org/yasu/) to clean-up & reset permissions every day. I've still gotten some CTDs, but it's not as bad as people are reporting in this thread.

I made the mistake of running a mission (my first activity lasting more than a few minutes in weeks) without rebooting into Windows first. Two crashes to desktop (first while fighting in a mission, second while jumping) in the last 10 minutes, costing me a full set of T2 drones. Joy.
Well, after I get back to my station, I'm rebooting into Windows... to play EverQuest 1 some more (I'm loving the new time-locked progression servers!). The hell with CCP - Eve is back on training mode with gametime paid for with ISK.

It might also be worth turning on the Cider trace log, if you find a way to replicate a problem.
