Interesting game that will be coming out later this year:
"Multiple Gameplay Modes. Enjoyable in standalone mode, Miner Wars also supports co-op gameplay so that missions can be carried out with friends and aliens can be driven off by coordinated efforts. For multiplayer activities, a single server will be able to support up to 100,000 players when the MMO version goes online in 2012." http://mirror1.minerwars.com/Downloads/Keen_Software_House_Success_Story_by_Intel_2011.pdf
Doesn't sound like a Eve killer but will give a alternate game choice for when we get bored station spinning.

JGE won't even come close to being a contender to rival EVE, whenever it is released that is. You won't be able to fly around the systems, there is an area around each gate that allows for battles to take place, but beyond that it's just s 2d map essentially, so you get to fly around a bubble surrounding the gate into that system and kid yourself you're flying around in a system. ------------------------------------------------ Quafe is people! |

Well hope you don't get too disappointed then.
All the recent MMOs have started off with a lot of hype and then end up as a disappointment at release.

nope
nether does minerwars
when will the industy get that battleships are the reason eve survived it's darkdays? I mean it sounds simple, but being able to pilot something 1000 times larger than your starting ship is a big draw. in other game you always WANT to be able to control those ships.

In X series you can fly a battleship. But then again, it's singleplayer.

Technically its single player, but the AI is advanced enough to make it smarter than half of the idiots running around the EVE Universe so it can feel like multiplayer...especially compared to hanging out in Jita. ----------------------------------- You will be assimilated...bunghole! |

ORLY ?
That's not quite what they said yesterday... If anything, this is the first time I have a shred of a feeling it might become something more than just vapourware, finally. Still, it's years in the future, that's for sure. 2 years until beta the earliest, and that's quite optimistic.

With the present world financial climate we may find other MMOs that are in progress shelved too. |

Certainly doesn't from what I've seen, it's all small fighter size stuff, ideal for twitch based game play. |

Yeah I read the yearly update too. Regardless, right now the whole 'company' of 2 guys, only one of which is a programmer, has only a demo that I couldn't even get to run. And they said in that same update that they've stopped working on the game itself and are now focusing on creating an engine to sell off, and will be focusing on that for at least a year. That being the case, I can't help but believe that anything he's put out are tech tricks and hype, not real usable product, and no indicator of what a finished product might actually look like. This guy is even more indie than CCP was when they started, and MMO standards are higher now than they were then. Guy could pull a rabbit out of his butt and make a fantastic game, but I wouldn't bet money on it. |

Well, to be fair, a fully working engine is far more important than gameplay content for a game where most "scenery" assets are procedurally generated, wouldn't you agree ? Also, it's not like he hasn't talked about focusing on the engine to sell licenses of it for funding before, I believe there was talk about it more than two years ago.
Besides, before they made that company, it was mostly talk plus hobby part-time work with no outside funding from somebody with practically zero business experience. Now that the other guy it riding his posterior and they're looking for investors and monetization opportunities, something just might come out. Granted, yeah, they're still far more "indie" than early-day CCP, as you said, but still, this is the first real bit of news that makes me hope SOMETHING actually workable could really come out before I die of old age, heh.

Well, yes, but the focus, as said in the post you linked, is licensing the engine out to other people. So, other companies will be ahead of the engine creators when it comes to actually creating a game. Sure, best case scenario is they create an awesome game that rocks everybody's faces right off. Best practical case scenario is that they create an engine and sell it to another company who then uses it. In any case, all demos shown are probably as useful as the first 'demos' of walking in stations, or ambulation, or whatever it was when they announced it. And CCP had a full company experienced in MMOs developing it all those years. 1 guy and whatever part timers they hire are not going to be able to put together an MMO within a reasonable timeframe without patronage of a bigger company that makes throwaway MMOs. |

Edited by: Goose99 on 23/01/2011 04:58:55 Black Prophecy to release soon. Close enough to qualify as competition for Eve. Direct control included, looks like Jumpgate Evolution with updated graphics. Uses Spaceforce 2 engine with multiple rendering engines for shader models 1.4, 2.0 and 3.0, so graphics will be far ahead of Eve and Jumpgate at higher settings, while viable for low end computers at lower settings. Tactical gameplay seem good, at least on gameplay trailers. Community and long term progression is anyone's guess though. The biggest problem for Eve is that it's free to play, so there is nothing to stop existing Eve userbase from checking it out, once that happens, at least some will get pulled over. http://www.blackprophecy.com/index.php?id=5 |

As far as I know, all wanna-be EVE killers are dying of Vaporware-itis.
Which is a shame because I'm really waiting for a game where piloting and PvP is more important than economics. And if I can use my Saitek X52 FCS all the better. If a game like this comes out I'll have a ton of stuff to give away |

As far as I am concerned, latest news about Infinity were very disappointing. I guess putting his -once used to be- main project aside for at least next couple of years (like it wasn't slow enough), and focusing to engine development and selling to third parties might be good business direction for Flavien, but as mere player I am now more than ever convinced that the game itself won't see the daylight.

Vapour ware tbh, if tomorrow that one dev has an accident, or gets married. or loose motivation.
or pretty much any unforseen event that happe to many men. than say good bye. I heard from countless stories from very ecperienced devalopers offering to help, and he doesnt accept anyones help. By the time his game is finished. he ll be 200 years old.

black prophecy is bad
it's like startrek online, the only thing it shares with eve is space, and once you get bored of some fancy backgrounds and WHOA JOYSTICK CONTROLS you'll realize that the gameplay is 95% instanced snoozefest _____________________ Look down. I would love multiplayer X. Dosen't even have to be an MMO, just do what they did in Freelancer and have private servers or something (MMO could work too but they'd have to pretty much redesign the entire game)

If they fix all the crashes, bugs, random lagspikes and glaring gameplay issues then it might be fun for a month or so, but I couldn't even bare a week in the CBT.
