man, this was sooo long ago...
i had just gotten my first cruiser, a lowley Osprey. i was in and around Lonetrek at the time. i don't recall the system i had to jump to to purchase the cruiser, but it was a .4 system. i was so green that i didn't really understand the implications of .4 at the time. also, Lonetrek was the busy bee of regions way back then. so a lot more pirate traffic.
anyways, i got the cruiser and fitted it out. i wanted to just see what it looked like and test it out on some rats. so i pick a random belt in the station and warp to it. upon arrival, i see a kestrel in the belt with me. he's not doing much and i'm not planning on staying so i just ignore him and continue to sping the camera around my new ship with awe.
in warps another cruiser, also an osprey, and almost immediately locks and engages me. i'm warp scrambled, damn. and now the kestrel is engaging me too. i'm convoed to pay ransom. and i tell the guy i literally just bought the ship and have 40k or something. "send it" he says. uh....... no.
so i'm trying to warp out, still clueless about the warp scramble effect. i'm trying to attack with whatever i can, and i notice that the cruiser i'm firing on is taking slightly more damage than i am from the two ships. which greatly surprises me. but, i'm admiring the pretty cloud effect on my ship preventing me from warping the brand new cruiser out to safety. shields gone.... he's into armor.... armor at half.... his armor is almost gone.... my armor is non-existent.... he's well into structure... and suddenly, when the flame graphics start to appear, my frantic attempts to warp out finally succeed !!
both cruisers are badly damaged as i leave the grid at warp speeds. i couldn't believe i made it out with the cruiser. not sure what happened. don't know why i was able to damage that cruiser so much. maybe they just sucked slightly more than i did?
but, it was fun. taught me to be careful with uninsured ships. taught me to be cautious in 0.4 and below systems. and was another nail in the "don't trust anyone" coffin.

there is a fine, but dissasterous line between a fart and a shart. i suggest you make sure which side you want to be on... |
