I have question about this type of ship, a friend of mine told me he uses a cnr in his missions and I was just wondering what a CNR is. Sorry, if this has been asked already, still very new to this game! |

"CNR" stands for "Caldari Navy Raven". The proper name however is "Raven Navy Issue", but "RNI" doesn't have the same nice ring to it, so people keep calling them "CNR".

The "Navy" versions of the regular battleships can be purchased from the Loyalty Points store, and are quite expensive in terms of ISK, but offer that extra medium slot, high slot, or low slot to make a battleship PVE fit much nicer than the vanilla ship.
Be aware, though, that if you go crazy with an expensive ship with expensive modules fitted, you will be probed down and attacked for a chance to loot your stuff.

They were still called that up until Empyrean Age weren't they? That's when a host of other "navy issue" ships were introduced and the names were standardised.
As for the CNR itself, it's popular with mission-runners due to having more damage output. The standard Raven has 6 slots for missile launchers while the Raven Navy Issue has 7. -- [Aussie players: join ANZAC channel] |

EA came out in 2008. They were RNI back in 2007 already for sure. Not sure whether they were ever called CNR, I can recall back when I was thinking about one in late 2006 and wondering why people call them CNRs. But memory can be a bit faulty over such long timespans, I guess. _

Later than that. Empyrean was about 3 years ago, BS names were standardized about 1 1/2 years ago. CBA'd to look up old patch notes. :P

If I remember correctly, the change was actually from Navy Issue Raven to Raven Navy Issue (so NIR to RNI). Like I said, I have a nagging suspicion it was never actually called a "Caldari Navy Raven" (CNR), but since everything else of Caldari faction was CN-something (CN BCUs, CN launchers, CN whatever) it felt more natural, I guess. Or it could have been called a CNR proper, but before 2006.
Eh, not really important _

I did some search-foo and found the static data export from Red Moon Rising.
The database contains already the 'Caldari Navy Raven' Quote: The Raven is the powerhouse of the Caldari Navy. With its myriad launcher slots and powerful shields, few ships can rival it in strength or majesty. Threat level: Deadly
and the 'Raven Navy Issue' Quote: "The Navy Issue Raven represents the best the Caldari have to offer on the battlefield: an all-out assault vessel with tremendous electronic warfare capabilities. Commissioned by Caldari Navy Special Operations Command a decade ago in response to a spate of coordinated Gurista attacks which threatened to decimate the populations of several planets in the Obe system, this hefty warship has since proven its worth many times over.
Special Ability: 5% bonus to Missile Launcher Rate Of Fire and 10% bonus to Missile Velocity per level of skill"
Both entries are in the current dump too, but the CNR is no longer flagged as published.

Sounds like the old Raven Navy Issue was what is now the State issue, which that change sounds familiar somehow...

No, that one was initially called "Corvus" (which is latin for "Raven"). Also, the minnie one was initially just called "Storm". Those were both prizes for the 3rd alliance tournament back in late 2006. Official names of ships were altered (as far as I know) before the rewards were actually given out, some time in early 2007. Band of Brothers picked 3 Tempest Tribal Issue (Storm) and 4 Raven State Issue (Corvus), THE RONIN picked 1 Tempest Tribal Issue. Entity bought one of each for the outrageous sum of 80 bil ISK each, if the reports of the sale were genuine. _

Are CNR's good for running high level missions? What kind of setups do they use?

They are usually placed in the top tiers of mission running ships. I personally prefer the Golem over the CNR though
Here's a fairly typical setup. Most of them are variations on this theme.
[Raven Navy Issue, Cookie Cutter] Caldari Navy Ballistic Control System Caldari Navy Ballistic Control System Caldari Navy Ballistic Control System Caldari Navy Ballistic Control System Power Diagnostic System II
Republic Fleet 100MN Afterburner Caldari Navy X-Large Shield Booster Invulnerability Field II Invulnerability Field II Photon Scattering Field II Heavy Capacitor Booster II, Cap Booster 800
Cruise Missile Launcher II, Wrath Cruise Missile Cruise Missile Launcher II, Wrath Cruise Missile Cruise Missile Launcher II, Wrath Cruise Missile Cruise Missile Launcher II, Wrath Cruise Missile Cruise Missile Launcher II, Wrath Cruise Missile Cruise Missile Launcher II, Wrath Cruise Missile Cruise Missile Launcher II, Wrath Cruise Missile Small Tractor Beam I
Large Warhead Rigor Catalyst II Large Warhead Rigor Catalyst I Large Capacitor Control Circuit I
Garde II x3 Hobgoblin II x5
and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Missile boats in general are often picked by mission runners due to the ability to project exactly the type of damage that the target is most vulnerable to. Apart from drones, all other weapon systems deal mixed damage types (eg: kin/therm, em/therm, exp/kin).
Missiles also tend to provide good damage output for low-SP characters and low-skill players. Players using turret weapons need to learn about traversal, optimal range, falloff, matching vectors with a target, etc.
Missiles have their drawbacks of course. The ship launching the missiles must remain visible on grid while the missiles are in flight. Cloaking, warping out or being blown up will cause missiles in flight to disappear. Then there is flight time. A CNR can project cruise missiles over 200km, but at that distance the missiles take a couple of minutes to arrive. -- [Aussie players: join ANZAC channel] |

Another thing that is often referred to by something thats not in its name is Ballistic Control System, which in short is often called BCU (Ballistic control unit).
Then we have HAC (Heavy assault cruiser) which are actually called Heavy Assault Ships.
And so on, and so on. We EvEers are a nice bunch when it comes to names, aren't we? _______________________ Drink Eau du Nichup«, the taste of heaven. Now available as Nichup Citrus« as well! |
