CCP, first question: am i actually ALLOWED to do the following:
Im..... bored. VERY bored.... but not without purpose. So.... in all my erm... "wisdom" (if you can call it that) ive deided to do something both profound.... and wierd.
Ive decided to attempt to create a LIFE SIZED replica of a Sanshas Nation Phantasm class cruiser, entirely out of scrap metal.
i dont quite know the EXACT specs yet but i do know that it will be 286m long..... i just need to get a basic principle of its overall shape, size and dimensions, so if anybody knows, id 'preciate it.
if i get those dimensions, maybe i can set about building it. finding materials for it is no problem, there are hundreds of scrapyards around with plenty of stuff that would be perfect for the task.... aluminium for weight and shape, steel plates for stability, a nice water proof paint coating and some other bits and pieces for details and reinforcing....
if i finish this.... chances are i'll try somming bigger or more complicated. like... an Ashimmu or a Cynabal.... or if space, time and resources permit, maybe even a Nightmare, or a Machariel.
who knows..... in any case.... i'll do it by myself if i have to. help would be liked tho... just FYI
anyways.... props to CCP. The Phantasm and Nightmare ships are the GODDAMN UNDEFEATED SEXIEST ships ive EVER seen, in fact the Nightmare was why i joined EvE in the first place.... considering the political climate, one would think me a nation loyalist. im not.
i just really like that ship!
S heres a tribute to Sanshas Nation before we burn it in a hail of missiles.... a nice big scrap metal monster covered in pointy spikes!
so watch out mother Earth! Sanshas coming to town!
assuming of course... i ever DO it.....
anyway, meap and see yaz later. *****************************

So lets get this straight. You plan on building something 3-4x the size of the A-380, the worlds largest (passenger)aircraft ever built, in your backyard... Why noy just rent an aircraft carrier?

OK I know that's slightly smaller than what you had in mind but should give you some perspective.
On the off chance that this idea survives your hangover I have to say it would be one of the coolest things ever built.

you know, that chemical stuff you took earlier - you might think this is the best idea ever right now, but it really is not. The scale of a supertanker will precipitate on you again when it wears off...

Okay, so you know the Rifter? That's about the same length as a Boeing 747 aircraft. The Phantasm is about 4 and a half times longer than the Rifter.
So just for the length, it would be equivilant to 4 Boeing 747s in a straight line from head to toe. The same height as the Woolworth building.
A Machariel would be 14 747s in a line... That's 200 metres longer than the height of the world's tallest skysc****r.
You will never do it solo, it's practically impossible without a group of engineers, builders, logistical support and heavy machinery.
Please, don't kid yourself.
Even the smallest ship, a Minmatar shuttle is about the size of a regional airliner... not so impossible solo but expect to be working on it for a few years plus.

I suggest doing something Minmatar instead. Sure, it will still be a spectacular failure, but at least your scrap pile will be indistinguishable from a "real" Minmatar ship. -----------

Try doing a shuttle first.
You can export the models from the client I believe, then you would be able to import them into 3d studio or something else and eventually get it into autocad for the exact measurements on everything. - - [SERVICE] Corp Standings For POS anchoring

Alternatively, make a scale Pod, which would be about the size of a 4x4 or an aircraft cockpit simulator.
Then build a computer setup inside of it. You'll be a legit Pod pilot.

I like your optimism, but at least make a small one first.
I'm sure even a 1:100 or 1:1000 sized model will take plenty of time to do, meanwhile giving you some of the experience needed to make the big one.
Btw, do you live in a desert or something? Where I live there is no way I'd be able to create anything like that, there is not even nearly enough available space.

Not to mention the building permits one would have to get for it...I can't imagine any municipality allowing something the size of a Rifter to be built, even if it's art. - - [SERVICE] Corp Standings For POS anchoring

OK ... say you really wanted to do this ...
1) Have you got your own personal junk yard to get all that scrap metal from - or - a tremendous amount of money to buy it?
2) Do you have a really large construction site?
3) Do you have a degree in Engineering? Cause with the size of this thing - if you don't know what you're doing - it is going to fall on you and kill you.
My suggestions - if you are at all serious about doing something like this ...
1) Draw up a blue print.
2) Calculate all the stresses on the materials you are going to use to construct it.
3) Build a model first. A small model. One that can sit on your desk.
4) As your attempts to build something like this bear fruit - then build something a little larger.
Now - usually - there is no restriction on fan art - as long as you don't try to make any money off of it. This means that whatever you build - you can't sell. Keep that in mind.

Just to give you a sense of scale. This is the USS Port Royale A Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser.
Length: 173 meters. She is 59.45% as long as a Phantasm
At the time of the photo, she was in drydock. Leaving all of us with a porta-potty to convey scale.
If you have enough scrap to put together something on that scale, you would be wasting your time with an eve ship. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Edited by: Karma on 29/01/2011 11:20:00 I guess you finally realized your mistake and now trying to hide your chagrin and embarrassment behind a facade of "I'm better than you because I still have a sense of adventure".
your only mistake was thinking you could make a life-sized EVE ship. could be fun if you scaled the ship down... heck, even a small model of an EVE ship would be awesome.
but a 200m long ship just isn't feasible.

get rid of this
There's no hate here. I want to see you try and build an EVE ship, it'd be amazing. You'd actually break all world records, especially if you built an Avatar or an Erebus (the others are just ugly). I'm actually optimistic, the Avatar is only 13km long and the Erebus 15. They're still much smaller than the Ragnarok at 17 and the Leviathan at 18.
Alternatively you could try your hand at something smaller like a Megathron or a scorp, both 500m long. While I think Rifter is too small a Tristan at 58m is perfectly fine. Now imagine if you could actually make a Retriever, 404m long.
While the Shuttle's been put in perspective I'd like to remind you that the Ronald Raegan is a mere 332m long. TI Super Tankers are 379m long.
Do let us know when you start construction on your future Titan.
I endorse all Frontal Impact posts aslong as i retain the rear impact title...
I await your arrival with great anticipation, don't make me wait too long though. I don't want to |

You're right, a Rifter is too small.
If you're going to do something like this you might as well start with the Erebus, it's only this big

Even though a life sized Eve ship, depending on model, is huge huge at bare minimum, I say go for it. The world doesn't know some of the truly awesome things that it has access to because people with ideas or dreams reached for the stars. If you think and desire small you will reach small places in life. Think big, shoot for the moon. **** all the mediocre thinking fail ****s. One does not achieve greatness by having fail as a goal.
