Space Barbie is epic fail.
* The interface is one of the most hostile bits of software I have ever had the displeasure of using
* The d*** light keeps blinking. After >100 attempts to capture my portrait while the face is lit, I just said frell it.
* The stupid things keep moving while you try to adjust them.
* Except you can't adjust them hardly at all.
* Its not even clear how the adjustments work. You move a certain way and sometimes things change, sometimes they don't.

As to the rest of the release:
- Sansha rubbish is rubbish. CCP created content is fail content. What happened to that sandbox thing? Now you are forcing people to go to your fail PVE parties or leave the constellation.
- Modernized shortcuts: great. Now tell me again CCP, how do I freeze the overview, since you took that off the <ctrl> button? Oh, that's right, CCP has no idea what a real fleet fight is like.
And the bugs. Honestly, do you guys even HAVE quality control?

lol. The portrait doesn't have the head shadowed in game - just in the tool. wtf ccp, you suck.

Though I loathe the term "Space Barbie", and even if you are a troll, you have completely valid points about the character creator.
I would've preferred just to get sliding bars, tbh

Maybe both. I've gotten quite used to the current ones and after some practice you can generally get what you want.
Unless you had something like 40+ sliders, you would have less options with them.

Erm... I don't believe this is true at all. Most of these "sculpting" areas are just glorified sliders. Move the mouse one way, one bodily feature changes. Move it the other way, it changes the opposite way. Nothing so complex as it's made out to be.

The movement issue has been brought up so many times.. on the Sisi forums. Theres been complaints about this from the very beginning. CCP did nothing. CCP Troll perhaps?

Hello OP,
I must admit the character creator isn't the most user friendly/intuitive tool I've seen.
It's still quite possible to get decent results with it though, it took me a while but I'm quite pleased with what I finally made out of it (after 3 tries). It was both a burden as a relief.

Looks like your entire character creation consisted of about six mouse clicks. Random morph, random morph, boob slider to max, pose for boobage, light for boobage, take photo.

Ok 'trolling' aside, I actually like the new creator, I found it 90% easy to use. The character moving was *FSD*S(D*F$ annoying as $)%*$% sometimes but it did give them 'life' .. what would be a great compromise is if they stayed ****ing still when we click a tick box or something for editing.

I think it takes too much trial and error to learn how to use it, I agree that the interface is very poorly designed except the sculpting tool which is fun to use.
Sansha incursion is quite rubbish I agree, in fact, CCP please stop releasing "beta contents" and use TQ as a testing platform... you should have a clearer vision and know how hard it should be before releasing it, not "release > get feedback > adjust difficulty" that just totally takes away the challenge.

The creator is EASY to use...maybe you like the structured hold your hand gameplay. If you were 'smart' you would see the mouse icon change to a different icon shape as you move your mouse around the face. You also see BIG whole highlighted parts of the face so I cannot see how you mess up.

Not even WoW's character creator can give you so much details and dimensions.
Plus note is that I was commenting about after taking your own pictures, you would get the mug shots in the small squares on the left and you could not see anything much after that. On clicking finalise, it enters the game screen and if your picture is not right, you will not know it until it is too late because you can see mistakes on the forums. With the new patch, the creator so much better because it actually shows you a large preview of your potrait before committing the finalisation.
How awesome is CCP on that? They go all out just for their players.

No, the creator is not easy to use.
On my machine, the head is blinking lit and unlit at a rate just right to cause epilepsy.
When I try to capture, sometimes the thumb image appears lit.
It is dark more than lit, and it's darker in the tool than in the image (captured from the character chooser in the Eve login screen).
For this one, after >100 tries, I gave up, and redid it.
I reasoned that if only the torso was lit, I would make a portrait emphasizing the torso.
On my machine, and in the creation screens, here is what the portrait looks like 60-70% of the time:

After having posted the rant in the OP, I am *slightly* mollified because I now know I don't really have to keep trying several hundred times to get a snapshot where the face isn't dark like I did on my main ...
CCP has a LOT to learn about usability.

The creator requires a pretty good cpu/gpu. Are you creator settings on low or max? whats your comp specs? above portrait looks like its an old portrait not from the new creator.

Well Jenny, I like the character creator but it doesn't hold a candle to even some older games out there. I don't play any other MMOs so I can't say much there, but have a look at TES4 Oblivion, DAO, the Mass Effect duo, the Fallout games and many others and you'll see just how basic this one is.

Well Jenny, I like the character creator but it doesn't hold a candle to even some older games out there. I don't play any other MMOs so I can't say much there, but have a look at TES4 Oblivion, DAO, the Mass Effect duo, the Fallout games and many others and you'll see just how basic this one is.

Seriously though it wasn't quite finished, we are waiting for tattoos, scars and so on, and having an complex character creation tool is a bit pointless till incarna hits anyway.

I found it quite easy. It's just that Eve's character creator is designed to weed out stupid people, just like the rest of the game is.

I like it more that way. With the way it moves and and the facial expressions you can see them right away and adjust. Otherwise you'd have to keep jumping back between portrait and full body mode, losing whatever shots you already made in the process.
Also this will be a much better preview once Incarna goes live.
What they need to work on is hair. Longer hair tends to fidget around the shoulders pretty badly.

Whatever floats your boat. Eve wouldn't require that many sliders at all though, really, so I don't see why we can't have them. The creator just gives the illusion to complexity, but really, I'd guess there are maybe 20-30 different glorified sliders hidden within it.
For instance, target the calves. Now move the mouse up. Now move it down. Congratulations, that's the only direction you can change the calves. Same thing with thighs, shoulders/arms, and probably one or 2 more features that I can't think of off the top of my head.
It's just not as insanely complex as everyone is making it out to be, just more annoying to use....

Laughingly I do admit that a lot of the characters I've seen don't seem to really fit into the game; like the original portraits did. They either look like they fell out of Final Fantasy or a homeless person, coming down off of an all night meth binge.
I'm hoping that CCP will add more customization features at a later time, so that people can take their characters back to their routes in this dark unforgiving universe and less of that "I'm feeling super sunny and happy today". |
