Estimating distances on the sky is very difficult even for professional pilots and there's no way that we can tell how far that object really was. Let alone its speed and size. Sure, it appeared to be just above the Temple Hill but it could as well hover above some point (tens of) kilometers away from the city.

I think I saw a UFO in Sutton Coldfield around 1987. It seemed small, Y shaped with those upright fins at the end of the swept back wings. It was very slender and had no bulges typical of jet or propeller aircraft. It looked like it was doing about 20mph.

First footage linked here resembles typical ball lightning (everything is there... movements, hovering, flash etc), and I said that we cannot be sure how far it was. Then came this second vid, allegedly showing that same bright orb sitting just above the Dome of the Rock, and I noticed that there's no flash... hence my question.
I am still pretty sure that it was ball lightning, and to be honest, this close-up video looks like it was directed.

You could be right, but I am now 100% sure that the close-up footage was CGI. Why? Not so much because of the missing flashes but due to the simple fact that on this original video, as well as on this one taken from different angle and location you can clearly see that the orb is moving horizontally while hovering just above the ground. While it's completely static on the fake footage taken near the Dome of the Rock (which really looks like a photo with pretty bad computer animation added later).
All in all, I stand to my opinion that the first couple of published vids were probably real deal, showing spectacular ball lightning fireworks.

The Utah branch of ILM tested it¦s ball-lightning machine and got the Jerusalem branch to perfect it.
Makes total sense.
