According to my psychologist the reason people play video games past the age of nine (the medically relevant age for people to stop playing video games) is because they were neglected by their parents.
EDIT: My opinion is clearly a 'NO' but then again I am seeing a psychologist so I might be 'nuttier than a bighorn dropping'
Whats your opinion?
Did your parents ruin your life?
Is super mario really more dangerous than injecting yourself with cleaning solution?

Depends on lots of things, the social environment for example. If a kid has bunch of friends who plays video games, he'll play video games too.
I'd say change your psychologist, he is full of ****.

The key has been and always will be moderation.
I played computer games as a kid about as much as i did anything else that was fun as a kid.
It wasnt because of anything other than playing a freinds console/pc and enjoying it.
no im not seeing a psychologist, but that doesnt mean i shouldnt :P

This.
I enjoyed my Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario as a kid, but I still had friends with whom I played ball in the park. I still play video games, but still know when to walk away from it and hang out with my best buds. That people are still trying to paint video games as the villain in childhood development is the biggest crock society has to offer. It's just a mouthy doctor who detests video games trying to make a quick buck.

It is true that I had spent a lot of time alone since my parents had full-day jobs so, short of a better idea, I played games to no end, read sci-fi books and listened to audiobooks
It's hard (impossible) to get rid of old habits.

Just remember that a psychologist is an enabler in a co-dependent relationship, but tries to remove you from all such relationships, except for yours and theirs.
And they take money for it. And aren't MD's.
A psychiatrist would have a more relevant opinion, and I wouldn't give a **** about theirs either.

My parents are the best human beings on earth, qualitatively speaking. I could not ask for a better family. I like video games because *I* like video games, not because of anything my folks did or did not do.

1> Ask him to provide proof/unbias studies showing this 2> Ask him if he thinks over 25% of the under 40 population fall into this category, since thats about the % that regularly play video games (rough number but taken from a recent survey in the UK) 3> Ask him what he thinks about the studies that show video games are shown to increase a person's ability to reason and understand complex information. 4> Tell him hes sacked and you are going to find someone who actually has the slightest clue what hes talking about. -The sword is only as sharp as the one who wields it. Playing games is a natural way for people (animals too) to practice their skills in a relaxed and stimulating manner.
Apparently your psychologist has missed a couple of essential lessons during his education.
Additonally, there is no such thing as 'a medical relevant age for playing video games'. As a ****laude psychology graduate (with a specialty in educational psychology) I would advise your psychologist to stop mixing his personal feelings with his professional opinions, or perhaps do some real background research.
I would ask your psychologist about the statistic that more than 50% of psychology students start their study because they believe something is wrong with them mentally, or they have someone in their direct family that they consider mentally abnormal.

I am a tin foil hat wearing crazy old hermit, however this is not a result of playing video games. Acctually video games have assisted in my socalization with the outside world. My older sister has a masters in psychology she also plays video games, and isn't crazy.
routinely when I was a kid my mom would kick us out of the house and make us go play with our friends. my dad played games with us.
so yeah please have you doctor go back and check his research, just because you play video games doesn't mean your parents don't love you, maybe you play video games because your parents loved you too much and you are rebeling against them

I'd be curious to see the articles he wrote stating the evidence for this hypothesis in peer-reviewed journals and the responses he received. Beyond that, it sounds like he's stating opinon as fact.
Run away. Your shrink is crazy.

Edited by: Alexanys on 01/02/2011 19:57:50 Its just like everything else having to do with video games, the mainstream ( your doctor ) sees them as a complete and utter waste of time. Thats the reality that alot of gamers are in denial about, sure its fun to play and I love games more than anyone, but they are not accepted socially in the U.S the same way they are in Japan. People that don't play see you spending 2+ hours in front of the PC and think that time is better spent either studying, watching Jersey Shore, working out, or getting a part time job. I been to peoples houses that hang up their favorite football teams flag on walls, or hang up pics of famous sports moments and that's perfectly fine, everybody loves it, but hang up a picture of something from our culture like a Rifter or w/e and you are seen as a child.
Its gotten to the point where I have resolved to pretty much keep my gaming a secret at least from the women I meet..But that's me coming to terms with reality, socially...its not ok to be a gamer.

Both my parents were complete drunks and lunatics. Yet, I didn't start playing video games until I was highschool. Matter of fact, the only reason why I started was because we used to rig quake 3 lan parties in the school library during the after hours of schools. I call complete bull**** on the psychologist. - Got any tinfoil? |
