The more I think about this, the more I think that implementing weapon arc's would be a good idea.
First of all weapon arcs would allow a lot more tactics in both ship fitting and combat - at the moment, as someone has already posted, bigger ship = bigger guns = win. Great I have no problem with that - the thing I have a problem with is the amount of time taken to win. (Dead in 2 sec's anyone?), If you respawned quake-style with all your equipment then this would not be a problem BUT we don't.
I would like to see a system a little like this:
The fitting screen is changed slightly so that instead of the standard fitting screen you get a blueprint outline of you ship, with various weapon mounts in each arc. Medium and low slot items would not be affected by weapon arcs and are mounted in a central location.
this would (imho) have the following affects:
1) Your ship would not be able to fire on a target until it's in the weapons firing arc - thus allowing frigates to live up to their name and be small and manoeuvrable and to stay out of a ships weapons arc's.
2)Not all weapons on a ship will be firing at all times, so a frigate against a cruiser would have more of a chance at fighting back as instead of 6 turrets firing on the ship, you may only have 2 and thus it would last longer. However on a one on one fight with 2 properly equipped ships (frigate v cruiser) the cruiser should nearly always win.
3) missiles should not be affected by weapon arcs since then can track there own target. This would bring missiles into the game more as they would allow a ship to fire on a another when it is not in it's arc. However they have the disadvantage of reload times and ammo costs. But I believe that we would see a lot more missile ships used as support in battles...
To compliment this I would also like to see manoeuvres implemented, so you would have 3-4 small buttons on the interface that say something like (bank left /right, face target) these could even be skill based.
you would then end up with a completly different combat system, and battles would (hopefully) last longer and have more "event" to them than just simple, target ship, activate weapons, watch opponant die. It would also encourage combat between uneven players. At the moment now, nobody ever fights a battle they dont think they can win -but with weapon arc's implimented a frigate pilot might go up against a cruiser because he knows the ships weak points and may be able to exploit them to his/her advantage.
Anyway - those are just my thoughts, and I realise that now the game is gold it is far too late to impliment such a radical change to the combat system. im not sure about any downsides to this idea, but im sure that you guys have some and I would very much like to hear them.....
