when talking with one of my corpies it was suggested for a newbie player that i should work toward a minmatar cruiser and go kill battleship rats in low/null sec for bounties. they said a correct fit should be accomplished in about a week, but didn't bother to say WHAT fit.
so what fit should i be looking for?

I go to null to kill bs belt rats, Angel Cartel. I use autocannon fits with armor and armor repairer. I have used stabbers, ruptures and bellicoses. For bellicose I have two fits, autocannon and heavy assault missiles.
The basic idea is that bs belt rats spawn this way: two bs and two frigates. All you have to do is close in, under their guns, they will not be able to track you. Then you can web the target or not, up to you, and shoot it until it is dead.
If you are in null alliance, you can fit for pure pve. Since I am high sec carebear, I fit for pvp, with scram and stuff, but it is not necessary if you already live in null and have friends near by.

What ship?
A minmatar cruiser for ratting will be either Bellicose, Rupture, or Stabber.
Either fit it with large shield extenders or armor resist mods and armor repairers.

Not tried it for a couple of years, but an AC ruppie used to be good for killing serp BS's. Just get in close and orbit a bs and use your drones (lights generally?) to kill any frigs or small ships before they pwn you then peck the bs to death.

Killing battleship rats is a good way to make isk... but probably not for newbies, especially in a cruiser. First off, if you're a newbie, I'm assuming you don't have much isk and you don't make much isk. Your first cruiser is likely to seem like a big investment to you (and at the time it is) and you risk it in low/null sec both while traveling to the place you rat and while ratting. One of the golden rules of EVE is to not fly what you can't afford to lose so you probably shouldn't be flying a ship you had to save up for in a place where it will be a target.
Then, even if you can make a cruiser that can tank the rats and you've been instructed on how to not get ganked while ratting, your cruiser will do such a low amount of DPS that I'm not entirely sure you'd make more isk than something safer (i.e. mission running in high sec).
If you live in null sec, then rat with a corpmate or salvage/loot after one of them finishes an anomaly. You'll make more money doing that if your corpmates don't mind it. While I don't have the experience in low sec, I'd suggest you do the same there. And if you live in high sec... then stay in high sec until you're ready move. Moving between highsec and low sec is one of the more dangerous things to do in EVE.
And lastly, if you're going to try belt ratting with low sp, then go for a battlecruiser. They do a lot more dps and have better tanks and don't require that much extra training. Granted, they're more expensive, but they perform much better.
As for fits, look at these for inspiration: http://eve.battleclinic.com/loadout/34227-Rupture-L2-mission-runner.html http://eve.battleclinic.com/loadout/8124-T2-PVE-Rupture-Tank-Tanks-0-0-BS-Rats.html http://eve.battleclinic.com/loadout/24622-Rupture-for-ratting-0-0-versus-Serpentis.html
Or something like this for a Hurricane: http://eve.battleclinic.com/loadout/34035-Hurricane-Ratting-Cane.html
Keep in mind that the fit you should use will depend on what kind of rats you're killing and your own skills. |

It's perfectly possible. I ratted in NPC angel space in a rupture for a while. Belt rats do very little dps so you can just use a shield fit and lots of gyros. Rupture is definitely the best cruiser for this sort of thing as its agile and fast for evading the odd gang and does very respectable DPS. (Between 400-500 depending on your skills)
Hurricane is probably a better choice, but the difference isn't as high as you would think. You kill rats so quickly anyway, you are going to be spending most of your time in warp between belts or systems looking for more red crosses to pop.
Again, as others have said though, this might be a bit of a stretch for a newbie. You will want the following skills tbqh.
Shield Management IV Shield Rigging I Weapon Upgrades IV Medium Projectile Turret V Medium Autocannon Specialization IV
and all the gunnery supports to IV at least. Not too mention decent drone skills You should be able to fly a Rupture fairly competently within a couple of months of focused training though, and I can guarantee you none of the sp you put in to training for one will go to waste.

+1 for the ruppy, it is a very good cruiser.
Probably best to hold off in going in and out of 0.0 space until you are doing L3s or even L4s with confidence.
Take the ruppy though, by then it will be a) a backup ship for you b) not your primary mission ship c) easily replaceable because d) its cheap.
If you do go though, make sure it is insured, cause chances are you won't come back with it

I sometimes used it for ratting in pretty good chained space too. Fit would be with AB, extender and invul, 3 gyros, dc and something I forgot in lows, 425s and HMLs in the highs... Gets up to 400 dps iirc and had no problems tanking/killing 3x 1.85 mil rats.
It only requires you to fly around smart, keeping transversal up and all that stuff. Pretty good ratting boat, prolly better than a drake for belt ratting if you ask me.

Shield tanking rupture 4 acs and 2 neuts Large shield extender, MWD, scram/disrupt (or invul if youre feeling lucky) gyros/tracking enhancer, damage control Light drones
rigs = resist rigs depending on where you are ratting and maybe an extender rig
Some people looking at this fit may say hmmmm, why does he suggest a scram and neuts? people who know what theyre doing already know why.
Coincidentally this is also a pvp fit. go kill people after u rat. Guns don't kill people. onowait. |

Back before I knew better, I used to rat in Amamake of all place in a Rifter. There are much better places to rat in losec than Amamake. The nice thing about the Rifter is that, while it can't really handle the cruiser rats, it can kill the BS rats pretty easily, holding them in place while orbiting in close and killing the frig NPCs. Best thing about the Rifter is that it is awfully cheap, and if you keep your eyes on local and the dscan, you should have no trouble getting away from the bad boys when they come to greet you. Thrasher works fine for this too, as does a Stabber or Ruppy or Bellicose, except with those at your current skills, you might have difficulty fitting them.
