Knowing that I am a total hoarder when it comes to technology (I throw *nothing* away), my dad has "accquired" an Apple Power Mac G4 for me.
It is currently back at my parents house and none of them are technically minded so all I have to go on is "it looks like it's never been used, it says 2Gb on it somewhere, it weighs a ****ing ton and the front is shiny".
Going off this amazingly professional description, I am assuming it is one of the later models, like the M8570 P57/58?
I know absolutely nothing about Macs (apart from they're **** for EVE lulz)... never used one, wouldn't even know where to turn one on.
I have been told if it's a newer one, it will run OSX 10.5 Leopard, if it's and older one, I'll have to use 10.4 Tiger and none of the G4s will run 10.6 Snow Leopard. Is that about right?
Other than, by the sound of it, it has 2Gb of RAM, I don't know any other details about it.
Assuming I wanted to upgrade the gfx card (AGP I hope, PCI if I'm unlucky), can I just buy any old card, install mac drivers for it, and it will work? I'm sure I read somewhere that gfx cards won't work without a MAC-friendly VGA bios-flash? Sureely technologies like AGP and PCI are unified accross all platforms? Or am I being naiive?
Before anyone says "OMG why even bother, just use it as a doorstop", I have about 20-25 computers and consoles from the 1970s - today, all working, all useable. Binning it is not an option

Don't know about the hardware upgrade, I'm sure you could from a technical point of view, but there might not be drivers available.
As for OS, 10.4.4 was the last PPC compatible release, afaik.

According to this Wikipedia article on the G4, the later DDR models can run 10.5 Leopard, which is what I think it is by the description my dad gave me.

It's a Power Mac G4 desktop, not a laptop.
And it isn't stolen, as such.

Edited by: ivar R''dhak on 04/02/2011 16:54:19 Ugh. Yank the hard-drive out and dump it in an external USB drive adapter, unless it¦s one of the humongous 10/-40 GB drives. The rest is trash.
Maybe you can sell the Memory on ebay.
Ah, just noticed you¦re one of them Hoarders. Guess it¦s another item to gather up dust then.

Apple Model No. 8570 covers several models, here is the list: http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/?search_keywords=M8570
I don't think it is worth the time or money to upgrade it. Just use it as is.

I did think about that, briefly, but I have a 400Gb USB drive plugged into my wireless router that I use for NAS and media streaming to my computers. For media streaming to my TV, I use my Xbox, or I put whatever I want to watch on a USB thumbdrive and plug it into the USB port on my TV.

Are you out of your mind? OS X is based on BSD. Why install Linux when you already have *nix based operating system!

I stand corrected. Didn't want to take wikipedia's word for it, so here are the system requirements for 10.5
