So, sec status is creeping up from missioning, and I'm looking for a fun and ideally profitable way to keep it from hitting 5.0 and just being wasted. Figure I might as well "spend" it. The two options I see are cruising around low sec and gradually having it drop that way. (likely not profitable, but likely more fun) Or suicide ganking in high sec, the goal would likely be to drop a mission Tengu with a friend helping. The main thing I'm dissapointed with though...
I've primarily trained missile skills, but I only have a couple million into them. My gunnery skills are negligible, like 200k. Arty Tempest seems to be the most popular, as it can squeeze in two volleys in .5 sec(I believe), has fast lock times, and good alpha. I know destroyers are popular for things like retrievers and haulers, but again, using artys. Because of my poor gunnery skills, I'm assuming I'd be using a Torp Raven with TP's and ganking on a gate where my target would have essentially no speed?
So, here's the real question; could me and one other friend with equal skills successfully take down a Tengu in .5 sec? Or should I start training gunnery and minmatar BS skills if I want to suicide gank well? I know this depends on a lot of factors, and I really ought to use EFT and do the math to find the alpha of two torp ravens. I'm really looking for some pointers that EFT warrioring won't tell me, and essentially, whether this is doable. Tengu is a small target, so I'm not sure TP's could compensate enough to get decent damage out of torps...
So yeah, thanks in advance for any replies.

Edited by: yani dumyat on 04/02/2011 18:30:58 Been a loooong time since I suicide ganked anyone so things might have changed.
A well tanked torp raven can fire at least 3 volleys before concord takes it down in a 0.5, you can kill quite a lot of stuff with that even solo. I don't have EFT in front of me but the DPS graph should give you all the numbers you need.
If you want to make good ISK from doing a limited number of suicide ganks then the secret is all in the preparation. Use a passive targeter and ship scanner to find your target, remember that people are often creatures of habit so a locator agent and some patience can pay off.
If you haven't done any suicide ganking before I'd highly recommend that you go on SISI and test the concord response first. This will let you optimize your fit and tactics without losing any sec status or having nasty doh moments on tranquillity.
Edit just to clarify - Torp raven is fine for suicide ganking, minmatar arty's have nice alpha but if you end up getting one less volley off due to the long reload time then the advantage is lost. All depends on concord response time and how long they take to kill you, something that I haven't tested in years.

Wait 2 low skilled pilots can suicide gank a t3(non-wartarget?) in high sec? Wait 2 pilots can suicide gank a t3(non-wartarget?) in high sec?

Afaik, depends on a variety of factors. If the pilot is dumb and has hardeners off, then yeah, easily. If they're already damaged and didn't rep to full from their mission? That helps. The low skills bit is what I'm not so sure on. I'll have to find the numbers once I'm on a computer with EFT.
If I recall correctly, fits like Liang's mission Tengu give a bit below 30k EHP at all V's. That gets completely murdered by for example the Tempests detailed here:
http://www.eve-search.com/thread/1230836/page/1
And remember, that's with hardeners on. Nearly solo gankable in .5 with high skills, take 2 for 100% guaranteed death. Certainly seems to me (without having run the numbers) that 2 low skill pilots could replicate or beat single high skill tempest numbers, and kill at least low EHP T3's. Of course, some fits may be more difficult or have higher ehp, Tengu is the only one I looked at seriously so far.
So yeah. You're deluding yourself if you think high sec is exactly safe. Very easy for people to ruin someone's day.

Many people fit hardners for specific missions, if the rats aren't shooting EM damage then why worry about that 0% EM resist? No damage control either because you wanted to fit another CN ballistic control unit? More common than you'd think.
Then there's the where and when. Engaging at the undock of the station or gate in the hope they've not switched their hardners on yet is a fools game. You're taking instant damage from gate guns and NPC's and betting on their reactions.
A smart ganker can follow you for days or weeks, waiting for you to run a mission against a specific rat type in a specific ship. That noob salvager seemed so friendly because you didn't know that he was watching your hit points as you took fire from the NPC's. You'd be amazed how fast a CNR goes down under these circumstances, fortunately for mission bears good gankers are rare.
