Edited by: JeanMichel Bizarre on 06/02/2011 13:45:44 Edited by: JeanMichel Bizarre on 06/02/2011 13:33:58 My brother just started a trial account - 2nd day in, second time trying EVE, and as opposed to the first time around, now he says he finds it all very intriguing, fascinating and interesting. He's fond of the whole space thing but I think he might be easily turned off by the lack of direction and or fun.
He's a bit of a carebear as well, having only played Guild Wars (strictly PVE) for the last 2 years or so.
I would love for him to acquire a taste for EVE, but I'm not sure how I can make his 21 day as pleasant as possible so he will stay, rather than leave like he did the first time. Admittedly, one of the reasons for his leaving was his lack of will to read, learn and do the freaking tutorials (now he's patient and curios). Other reasons included the subscription fee, FFA PVP, lack of on rails PVE.
I planned an exploration trip for tonight in hi-sec. We will try to do some combat sites, maybe profession sites as he seems exploration is what he finds most interesting atm.
Any suggestions? Any common mistakes?

If you have enough ISK, buy him a PLEX.
That's what I'd do to bribe a friend in staying.

Well let's see....
-Missions (bleh) -Mining (triple bleh) -Exploration (only fun if you're lucky, especially in high sec, otherwise bleh) -Trading (YUCK)
That's about all I can think of that noobs can do in Eve, other than ganking from can miners' stashes (which can be fun, but I'm guessing you're against that).
Eve is a game that's fairly unfriendly to new players. Just throwin' that out there.

Edited by: Terrible Damage on 06/02/2011 13:46:44 Edited by: Terrible Damage on 06/02/2011 13:46:18 Have the same issue (with the brother ), it's hard to convince people to actually stay with the game when it starts to unfold months later.
I think if time to first pvp would be shortened alot of people would win. Perhaps the most basic skills like engineering/electronics/small whatever cannon which you just *need* for a reasonable frigate fit shouldn't take a month to get. Noone gives a crap if Huge Boss Ship V takes 37824d to get, but not being able to fit a ****ing autocannon to your rifter and then having to wait 2 weeks for it is kind of a let down. The same goes for every other profession, like mining, trading etc. It's ok if it takes long if you want to specialize into a certain field but having to wait months just to be able to perform the most basic things somewhat efficiently on your own is putting people off.

My older brother never plays anything where:
A) I'm higher level than him. B) I'm better than him. C) I know more than him.
Without fail as soon as I beat him in a game, he never plays it again.
Oh and if you're wondering. He did used to play Eve, but I passed him in SP.
He quit.

Join FW, theres PvP and PvE in there HOWEVER the unique thing about FW is that it is social much like alliance chat (well not TESTs macro spamming meme chat).
Lots of drama, lots of lolz
If he can make some friends on his own etc he will probably stay, eve is really boring if you play alone and chances are he will probably quit if he does all the solo boring stuff.
I would suggest joining Caldari FW, we have the most skilled and entertaining corps in the whole game - 0.0 will be all MINE! |

This game is not for everyone. That is really the truth. But, you could always integrate him in your gameplay. Take him on tow really, if you feel if he is up for it. Maybe set him up in deep space if your holding house there and let him rat with you and your friends?
Besides that, I simply advice you to let him explore on his own hand, preferably in empire to start with. Thats where I find my fun: exploring new eden.

I always found that rushing people into showing off EVE "we're gonna do THIS and THAT, hey look HERE!" isn't necessarily the best thing to do. Mostly because different people like different things and some people like to take their time a bit.
Perhaps he reacts better to the "Here's the links to guides, forums and youtube vids and whatnot, here's 10 mil and if you have questions ask me". Perhaps show him this and figure out what he'd like to do.

Too bad incarna is not closer, i think that will help alot in grabbing new ones who just dont feel "in it". Ive had several friends who tried it but just didnt get that connection with their character with only ships in station to spin around.
But in the meantime, you know, bottomline is, they either love the game or they dont. And if they dont, believe me, dont waste your time. I cant tell you how much isk ive blown many times, on ships, equipment, game time cards for friends to play and make it more easy, and in the end, not do anything as they all left. Ive learned to just let them play, and not carebear them so much. Afterall, how did YOU get into the game. I didnt need any bribing, or whatnot, i just liked the damn game from day one, no forcing me. And thats how it should be if someone is going to stay.

I introduced a friend to Eve and pondered the same issue of him staying with it
Once heÆd completed the tutorials, which are a must, I started taking him on missions as the frig/cruiser killer. Helped his standing for when he wanted to try the lower ones solo but without the painful grind to get to the lvl 2Æs which was his natural lvl based on skills. He was also given the wrecks/loot as I blitz anyway, so the huge earnings gained from these for a new player made things far more attractive. He quickly moved from his salvage Cane to the Noctis without me having to fund. With all these effectively free components, looking into manufacturing was an option for him and I now ask him questions and have started an alt on the indy path based on his experience and knowledge. Me thinks he now spends too much time on this element and his PI stuff as he managed to lose a Drake with me the other day as he failed to notice the 4 scrambling frigs on him for 2 minutes and it was too late to help him when I told him to GTFO. I didnÆt think losing a Drake in a mission was even possible. The numpty deserved it though as IÆve given up telling him to keep his drones under control
Whilst this is far from an exciting path to start with, the isk generation will be good for a new player, so having the freedom to buy the lower end toys easily will keep him interested long enough to get him hooked
As for exploration, great skills when you move beyond high sec, but not so good in it. You waste more time scanning than you do earning and the big drops are few are far between. If isk not the driving factor, then go for it as is an interesting element

^THIS. Caldari FW militia chat is quite fun, especially with how butthurt people tend to get. Plus they have, probably, the easiest missions to farm in a stealth bomber or are tied with the Minnie side. And there is always PvP action to be had except late US TZ/early EU TZ. Though it generally starts to pick up a little after DT. Oh noez! /o\ |

Promise him free ships and equipment in the first time, then take him along to 0.0 with your alliance and have fun.
Where are the old times of Goonswarm anyway when they invited every noob and their dog and then rushed around with noob (or rifter) fleets?
Show him the PvP part. Right into the cold water. Either he learns to swim and will have TONS of fun or he runs away screaming (only to come back later ). |

This brother of yours sounds exactly like me, down to every detail. My brother tried to get me into this game when I started playing Guild Wars, strictly PvE. I gave it a shot, just mining away, but it didn't do anything for me. Two years later, got bored of Guild Wars, got another trial, and went right back to mining. After a few days, my brother said, screw this, get a frigate, and lets go kill something. I never looked back.
tl;dr: Get him to kill stuff.
You're doing the right thing, showing him everything that you can do in this game, exploration sites and what not, it'll blow his mind. I know mine did, when my little brother finally got me playing this game.

If you wanna get hooked on the game you need to develop a taste for multiple aspects of the game by getting in touch with it.
A good way to make him stay is to join an active and friendly corp that accepts new players as well.
Go on a roam, kill some stuff, make new friends and most important, have fun.

The best way to get him hooked is to get into a decent, active corp that will help make the learning curve bearable. Even if he's just into carebear stuff, just knowing that he has a group of buddies in the game who have scheduled a mining op or running a bunch of Level 4 missions may be what it takes to get him hooked.
It's sort of the nature of EVE being it's a sandbox type of game, you either have to create your path or at least sign on with a group who can help you find that path. That is how it was for me, back in 2003, I was about to quit in frustration when I got an invite to a corp with a good bunch of guys. Once he has the basics down and some goals in mind he'll be hooked.

This, basically.
The more you try to make people stay in the game, the more you'll scare them away.
Most important thing is: don't overfeed new players with info. It's very easy to do that in Eve. Instead show them cool trailers, show them Eve never fades, tell them in short what you can do in the game, what the game is all about.
And then let them find out on their own, just making sure that they can always ask you when they don't understand something.

Edited by: Swynet on 07/02/2011 16:59:17 For someone liking pve enounters/tactics and sometimes choosed pvp (duel or predeterminated engagements like arenas etc) the eve's pvp will give him the same taste the harder pvp'rs of eve have about having to pve against incursions = be forced to do what you don't want to.
This is mainly what will make him move away once again, but you can add the promotion/encouragement of scam and all forms of grieffing witch has violent impact in people's opinions about eve. You must like the grieffing, the revenge, the simple pleasure of make people loose what they like so mutch just for the pleasure of doing it.
But he can also find some interest if you show him the general "craft" possibilities, cause if he searches for the pve side in eve the word "poor" is not enough, eve pve is designed to help pvp and he will not have the choice than pvp with or without he's agreement. He must be conscient of that if he ever wants to stay more than a few months grinding skils to be able to something elese than the "boy" of someone else.
