There are a number of wait events in the game, and the only indicator of progress is an annoying popup that tells you how much time is left for the action when you try to perform the next in a series. Some examples:
- Just docked; can't yet change ship, undock, etc. - Just undocked; can't yet redock, use gate, etc. - Just activated jump clone; waiting.........
What I'm proposing would make the game better are some visual transitions that provide not only a better status indicator, but also something interesting to look at. For instance, a fleet of drones works on pulling your ship in, getting it hooked up to...whatever, and anything else upon docking. You know you're free to change/leave ship or undock when they've stopped their work. Little things like that could be scripted to run client-side and not have a noticeable performance impact.
Also, in the context of Incarna: how cool would it be to have the camera move through the whole docking process all the way through to 3rd-person character view? You dock, see all the activity involved there, see your pod leave the ship and...whatever, and as your character emerges the camera origin moves to his/her shoulder and seamlessly becomes your station walking view. That's probably very complicated to do and doesn't really change the gameplay, but perhaps there are little things that can be done to more completely immerse the player in the game. Thoughts?

Am definitely aware of that - and it's beside the point I was trying to make. The proposal would just improve visuals and isn't intended to solve a problem.

This may be more suitable as its own thread, but I was also thinking about a less secluded docking area when in a station. I'm pleased that the station owners have such a large area set up for little old me, but it might be cooler to see a sort of garage full of the various other docked ships. My own camera control wouldn't necessarily change - I'd just see interesting stuff around me from other players.
I think there would be a performance impact, but not sure it would be prohibitive since this wouldn't be much different than outside the station (except players' locations wouldn't change - but that helps.)
This could tie into the visual animations - you'd see players prepped for takeoff and landing as they arrived, etc. You wouldn't necessarily see them fly out into space (i.e. wouldn't have to render the outside of the station,) but maybe just around a corner in the station where the ship would disappear and change sessions as usual.
Jita 4-4 would be a circus; there would have to be limitations (maybe the garages within stations page - past 25 docked ships, new arrivals go to a different garage.) Again, not intended to solve a problem - just eye candy.
