Yes its one of them ideas about mining but hear me out on this-
When you first activate (or just before activating) mining lasers or strip miners, you have to scan the asteroid, and plan a ômining routeö through it. This will be done with the scan showing the pockets where there are minerals hidden in a three dimensional scan result.
Now here is the interesting/skill/human player needed bit, the ore (like in the real world) could be trapped under unwanted rock, it will be up to the miner/miners to find the most economical and profitable way through the asteroid. This will be because each fitted miner will have a set amount of distance it can mine per run. So if you have found a lovely pocket of ore on the surface of the asteroid which there is enough of for the whole run you get a lot of materials that run, but if you got to get through some rock to get to the ore the output for that run will be less, but the next run may be more profitable as you have uncovered the pocket of ore.
To keep the player paying attention to where they are mining, there should be a possibility that the asteroid will become unstable and collapse in on itself earlier if the mining route is not carefully planned keeping in mind the integrity of the asteroid.
The whole process should not take a huge amount of time to sort, and should be made editable on the go, just in case a pocket previously unable to be scanned due to dense rock (of some description) appears.
On the planning stage there can be options to plan a route for all lasers, or just one (if you want to mine multiple rocks at once) and planning for multiple runs of a miner, such as run one route followed by two and three, allowing a route to be planed for a whole asteroid in one go.
An option to share mining route plans (before activated) to gang members should be available to help coordinate mining efforts (get through solid rock quicker, avoid a collapse), while after activation the plan for the currently activated part of the route should become available to anyone scanning that asteroid, to help determine profitability of that rock, or even ôstealingö ore from the same pocket of someone who has broken through a layer of rock.
This idea I feel will help to make it a bit less mind numbing, allow mining wars by allowing anther mining to find the nice pockets and mining it from under their nose , and to try and stop that thing people hate bots and macros.
Just an idea I been playing with and felt I would share for discussion.
Tl:dr: scan a asteroid plan a route to the ore and mine it

Edited by: boseo on 07/02/2011 23:23:53 yea literally after posting this I saw it and was like d'oh!
edit* after a skim through that idea (though I do have a bias view) I do feel this is a simpler version simpler to implement. as it would not require new modules.

You know how mining lasers are supposed to work right? They vaporize the roid, suck in the gas and filter out the valuable minerals.
Sorry, mining is mindless enough as it is ... playing pointless games at the same time is just wasting my time even more. .
