In-game description of the Scorpion:
Quote: The first Scorpion-class battleship was launched only a couple of years ago, and those that have been built are considered to be prototypes. Little is known of its capabilities, but what has been garnered suggests that the Scorpion is crammed to the brink with sophisticated hi-tech equipment that few can match.
However, if you read the novella "Ruthless" about the rise of Otro Gariushi, the Scorpion was the workhorse of the Caldari fleet prior to the launch of the Raven, both well before the chronological start of the game, hardly "only a couple of years ago".
Which should be taken as canon?

The workhorse was the old "elbow" scorpion. The prototype is the new one that looks like a Nod stealth tank.
(Yeah, the writer of that story screwed up a bit. The above is a lolRP explanation.)

Edited by: Jovan Geldon on 10/02/2011 16:24:00 Yeah, Istvaan explained it pretty well. Also, props for the C&C reference, I've been saying ever since they updated that model that it looks like a Nod ship. The Widow especially does, 'cos of the red paint job (and heck, even its abilities match with the Brotherhood ethos )

Not sure how the authors of the Project Athena dealt with the 'official' EVE fiction, although the Scorpion info page from the PA says:
Quote: The Scorpion began life as a combat battleship replacing the aging Cobra light battleships used in the early stages of the Gallente-Caldari war.
, which is then followed by the histories of the Scorpion models and modifications.

T0nyG wrote Ruthless, so I don't count it as Cannon. ============================================

By that measure TEA is also not cannon, which on its face sounds ridiculous. I feel you, though.
Just crossing my fingers for some more storyline cleanup, I guess.

I think both can be taken as canon, if you include the explanation of the "elbow" Scorpion in the answer. History is replete with examples of military hardware being refitted and going on to lead a different existence after something newer came along. Just look at the Ohio class SSBNs as an example: a tried, proven system whose first four were about to be turned into high-quality razor blades in the early 2000s. Instead some smart bureaucrat (shocker, I know) got the idea to refit them from SSBNs to SSGNs, and now they carry 170+ Tomahawks apiece and continue to conduct active operations. --

I reluctantly accept major world changing events that had ingame changes and news articles to go along with them.
As for ridiculousness, I quote one tiny example of his atrocities;
Originally by: Chapter Seven, of TEA Initially a welcome ally of the Caldari State, the two civilizations merged and collaborated on the development of exploration technology, thus creating mutual opportunities ...but the Gallenteans were passionate liberals and eager trader; the Caldari on the other hand were loath to create opportunities for any race other than themselves. The former's insistence of access to markets that had been controlled by megacorporations for centuries clashed...
I would like to point out that this was not written from the point of view a character. This presented as factual PF, and contradicts all pre-existing PF on the subject. According to TEA, the Gallenteans were only trying to gt free trade with the Caldari and even though it greatly benefited them too, the Caldari went to war with the Gallenteans because they didn't want to do anything that might benifit another race.
Also, the T0nyG decided that the Caldari weren't in the steam age when the Gallenteans landed and that the Gallenteans didn't bring the corporate system to the Caldari as per all pre-existing PF. They'd had fully developed Mega-corporations for centuries!
He changes important core PF around willy nilly to things that don't even make sense. ============================================
