Edited by: Brer Avin on 11/02/2011 20:13:51 Hey Guys
Just signed up for Eve Online to check out Incursion and the character editor a couple weeks ago and have been casually playing around.
One thing I've been doing though, that I think you guys might think is cool, is playing Eve through my iPad. I'll go into 'how' later, but I have to say it looks awesome on the ipad and, I don't know about you, but playing while lying on the couch = big win. Now, things like complex combat aren't terribly practical (though not impossible) but mining, traveling, scanning, organizing, or any of the slower paced gameplay mechanics are perfect.
Autopilot with UI turned off is like watching a scifi movie. I took a couple shots (sorry, I don't have very cool ships or locations yet :/) just to share. You can see my little ipad "keyboard" tab on the bottom :)
How? Well, iPad has a cool app call "Splashtop Remote" that streams your desktop to your ipad. Even works remotely. The rest is self explanatory :).
I gotta say, it feels like a decidedly "2011" experience. Love it.

I can honestly admit that I've always wanted a touch screen EVE experience. Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. |

The one thing that the iPad hasn't done for you is to read the forum rules re. posting pictures out loud in the voice of Tom Hanks

Mind posting some shots with the ui on and some windows open like the market?
Otherwise prety neat even though I wouldn't touch anything apple even with someone elses hands.

I have been playing Eve from my iPhone (and now iPad) for over 2 years with iTelephort. Checking market orders, simple cargo runs, setting skills, etc. I wouldn't do any PvP this way, but I have run missions (over WiFi, wireless is too laggy (be FU to AT&T (who I work for))).

Heh, a lot of iPad cynicism here. :)
Ahh, I see, we're not allowed to post a batch of actual images. Oops :(
Well, here's a link to a UI shot. I only snagged one last night. It's a bit cramped, but workable.

I'll give this a shot over the weekend. If it's as you say, I suspect I'll derive some form of guiltless quasi-erotic pleasure from this. Thanks in advance.

Ipads are awesome, much better than sitting at your pc to do general stuff, If you truely can run eve on ipad this is great news.

Glad you guys think it's neat too :).
To the general question of performance: I don't want to mislead anyone, it's not going to be like playing on your PC. The mouse is a little less precise (for example, to close a window, you have to click slightly below the x), you don't have a real keyboard (though it does support blue tooth keyboards), quick movements are not instantly responsive, and your screen space is smaller. The playback is certainly not a silky smooth 60fps - the stream is probably more like an acceptable (to me) 20+ fps. Now, that may be a deal breaker for people who are real picky about performance, but for me it's been totally fine.
All that said, the display quality really does look great and simple gameplay has not been a problem for me at all. I'll spend some time on my PC doing missions and combat, then I'll switch to the ipad to do some mining, skill organizing, refining, traveling, or scanning. The shear joy and convenience of doing this all on a hand held device makes any limitations worth it.

Does the performance drop like, during undocking and stuff like that. Or is it consistantly slowish all the time. For example, I can run even on a netbook, it looks **** and runs ****, but runs fast out in belts and stuff and slow as arse during undocking.

If I'm understanding this correctly - this is simply using a RDP (Remote Desktop) type connection. Your main system is still running EVE, the iPad is simply streaming the display. In which case, it will behave like your main system with the additional FPS loss for running across a remote desktop type link.

Uh...
Sure, it's Eve on an iPad's screen, but it's not running on an iPad.
I mean, it's great and all... but it's not running natively on the iPad, and still relies on another windows based machine somewhere else to be running it, and a wireless connection to connect to that machine.
