Edited by: Brer Avin on 11/02/2011 20:13:51 Hey Guys
Just signed up for Eve Online to check out Incursion and the character editor a couple weeks ago and have been casually playing around.
One thing I've been doing though, that I think you guys might think is cool, is playing Eve through my iPad. I'll go into 'how' later, but I have to say it looks awesome on the ipad and, I don't know about you, but playing while lying on the couch = big win. Now, things like complex combat aren't terribly practical (though not impossible) but mining, traveling, scanning, organizing, or any of the slower paced gameplay mechanics are perfect.
Autopilot with UI turned off is like watching a scifi movie. I took a couple shots (sorry, I don't have very cool ships or locations yet :/) just to share. You can see my little ipad "keyboard" tab on the bottom :)
How? Well, iPad has a cool app call "Splashtop Remote" that streams your desktop to your ipad. Even works remotely. The rest is self explanatory :).
I gotta say, it feels like a decidedly "2011" experience. Love it.

I can honestly admit that I've always wanted a touch screen EVE experience. Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. |

The one thing that the iPad hasn't done for you is to read the forum rules re. posting pictures out loud in the voice of Tom Hanks

Mind posting some shots with the ui on and some windows open like the market?
Otherwise prety neat even though I wouldn't touch anything apple even with someone elses hands.

I have been playing Eve from my iPhone (and now iPad) for over 2 years with iTelephort. Checking market orders, simple cargo runs, setting skills, etc. I wouldn't do any PvP this way, but I have run missions (over WiFi, wireless is too laggy (be FU to AT&T (who I work for))).

Heh, a lot of iPad cynicism here. :)
Ahh, I see, we're not allowed to post a batch of actual images. Oops :(
Well, here's a link to a UI shot. I only snagged one last night. It's a bit cramped, but workable.

Glad you guys think it's neat too :).
To the general question of performance: I don't want to mislead anyone, it's not going to be like playing on your PC. The mouse is a little less precise (for example, to close a window, you have to click slightly below the x), you don't have a real keyboard (though it does support blue tooth keyboards), quick movements are not instantly responsive, and your screen space is smaller. The playback is certainly not a silky smooth 60fps - the stream is probably more like an acceptable (to me) 20+ fps. Now, that may be a deal breaker for people who are real picky about performance, but for me it's been totally fine.
All that said, the display quality really does look great and simple gameplay has not been a problem for me at all. I'll spend some time on my PC doing missions and combat, then I'll switch to the ipad to do some mining, skill organizing, refining, traveling, or scanning. The shear joy and convenience of doing this all on a hand held device makes any limitations worth it.

Does the performance drop like, during undocking and stuff like that. Or is it consistantly slowish all the time. For example, I can run even on a netbook, it looks **** and runs ****, but runs fast out in belts and stuff and slow as arse during undocking.

If I'm understanding this correctly - this is simply using a RDP (Remote Desktop) type connection. Your main system is still running EVE, the iPad is simply streaming the display. In which case, it will behave like your main system with the additional FPS loss for running across a remote desktop type link.

Uh...
Sure, it's Eve on an iPad's screen, but it's not running on an iPad.
I mean, it's great and all... but it's not running natively on the iPad, and still relies on another windows based machine somewhere else to be running it, and a wireless connection to connect to that machine.

But I can play eve on an ipad in some place I should be doing other stuff than playing eve on an ipad!!!!! Get with the times man. You have to be able to game in any situation to be cool and edgy nowadays. Taking a dump? Bring the ipad. At work? Ipad. Over at the friends house? Ipad ahoy! At a movie? Ipad again!
Tbh apple make some of the most socially disfunctional hardware around. ffs I bet someone puts an ipad in their coffin when they die so they can play eve and browse pron in the afterlife.

Key words being somewhere else! I.e not in bed, in my lap. The idea of snuggling with EVE in bed appeals to my deepest, darkest, inner nerd. I mean, I've been trying it for years, but cuddling with PCs never works out well, they're too demanding on real estate, and they always steal the blanket.
This just may be the solution I have waited for.

Laptop maybe? Then you can actually do everything you need and only have one computer to run. Though for marketing purposes I suppose this is right up ccp's alley for a new game site interview.

Exactly what I was thinking.
Ive been playing eve all over the house in hotel rooms infact anywhere were I have had an internet connection for years off a laptop. I even play on it when traveling places and im not home even in a different country. But now with an Ipad I can do exactly the same as long as I have my desktop PC turned on and access to it... thats progress

I was playing EVE on an Android phone not long ago the same way. Obviously you had to zoom in and out which was a nightmare but it's a good idea. Who cares if it's streaming from another machine? It still allows you to do the ironing while watching Deal or no deal.
I'd like to say "HUR DUR DUR iPad fail" like the rest of society that doesn't have one, but the truth is I just can't afford one. Might save though, I do like the idea of trolling my favourite forums from the comfort of my bed. They remind me of clip boards.. I had an unhealthy obsession with clip boards as a child.

I've been wanting a mobile device for updating market orders/changing skills on the go. although still a bit too hard to justify buying a tablet over a laptop.

Thanks for the the replies guys, and thanks for the fitting suggestions :)
Contrary to how it may have appeared, I wasn't really on some 'pro-ipad' agenda, and I wasn't even saying this tech was all that new, or that it was better than laptops or what not. I just thought it was kind of cool and I didn't see any other ipad posts :). If you disagree, I won't argue :)

slightly offtopic but does anyone know what the best app i can get for my android 2.2 phone for remote access of my pc for the purpose of updating eve skills etc, i tried androidvnc but it was incredibly laggy and would only show the desktop and wouldn't allow me to see eve for some reason, it definitely loaded but just wouldn't transmit that image to my phone

However I guess the ipad need to be tweaked to run the game?
If you guys want to play on a tactile platform, try the Exo Pc:
http://www.exopc.com/en/exopc-slate.php
The exo pc is a full-featured windows 7 Pc on a tactile presentation.
It has a 1.66 ghz CPU, 2 gb of ram, come in a 64-bit version, got a 1080p resolution on a 11.6 inches screen, come with a storage of 32 or 64 gb and have a 32 gb card reader and a web cam.
You can plug in a key-board or a mouse also.
Price? 650$
Holy crap, now that looks cool and actually usable. The only drawback I see is the intel gpu. Any info on if this can run modern games like the newest eve build at an acceptable framerate? If so then this might be worth looking into.

Hehe. Np mate as its pretty cool that you can do this at all and for ipad owners who play eve its a nice bonus. It's just when you are in the know about the vast limitations of the ipad coupled with its insane pricetag you tend to develop a rather bad case of ihate.

Although it's probably not a good idea for me to play Eve while curled up in bed. I've already been podded twice for falling asleep in low sec :D
