What you fail to understand, is that what people do in EvE (Scam, gank, ninja, etc.) they would gladly do in real life, if they could get away with it in the way they do in EvE.
EvE is like a mirror on the soul. People will deny it, and say, no, I'm not like that IRL...but the truth is, you would if you could.
Real life has consequences, EvE is just pixels, so much easier to just act out your innermost desires where there are no "real" consequences.
Disclaimer: This can be said of any online game, but more particularly of games involving PvP.
Heaven help the universe if anyone ever manages to create EvE's pod technology...

It's all a part of the 'mine is bigger than yours' mentality that features a lot in this game.
If I ridicule your point of view and make you look small, it makes me look bigger in comparison.
And no, I'm not showing you mine because you're obviously the sensitive type.

Your doubt, it fuels me. Your hate, it drives me. The challenge ignites me. You make me fight harder!
But yeah, some people take this way too seriously.

What I've always wanted for the forums here is a slashdot style mod/filtering system. Randomly award a bunch of people a few mod points, with which they can basically like and dislike a forum post. Then I can filter out everything but the highest-rated stuff.
Unfortunately we will never have that. Instead, I believe the new forums will have just a "like" link for each post? I hope it will show the likes so that someone can write a Firefox extension to hide everything with less than 1 "point".

Originally by: Signal11th Unforunately with games like EVE/WOW the majority of people as a rule are fairly weak minded individuals who will always take the path of least resistance and easy cash.
It's easy to slag someone off in a game or on a forum as there is never any punishment or comeback from usually whatever they say. All the people who will slag someone off in game usually when faced with the same choice in real life will usually say nothing or if they do say something in real life will be on their toes as soons as there is anything moody going on.
When you call someone a **** on a forum what's the comeback ..nothing so it's easy to say.. When you call someone a **** in your local boozer the comeback is usually a glass in the face or a quick stint in the local A&E, so you don't do it.
MMO game are sometimes a mirror of real life, You'll get the odd hardcase who can fight on his own and win but usually the weaker members will gang together to overpower a stronger opponent. Unfortunately society is filled with morons so forums and games and life in general will always suprise (or not suprise) you with how idiotic some people can be.

This is such a trite and stupid generalisation. I used to find it hilarious sneaking up on my mates in Counter Strike, BF2, whatever and shooting them in the head, stabbing them in the face, dropping grenades on em...in EVE I'd happily blow up a somebody I knew if we happened to be in warring corps. Are you seriously suggesting that means I harbor deep and secret desires to murder them irl?

Reputation will have no effect on posts, if it's tied to character name. Everyone uses forum alts (well, almost) so deleting that character, starting a new and KEEP TROLLING isn't exactly hard. With a clean slate as a bonus.

I don't want either
What WOW-forums need is moderation and ppl getting banned. But I guess that would hurt the $$$$$ Activision/Blizz are making.

BTW, I agree with this and said it many times myself. However, I was thinking that in reality you have to hide the bodies. That can be difficult to do sometimes. Maybe if CCP would force people to have to hide or dispose of bodies before CONCORD found them (even in null sec) most of your problems would be solved right there.

The behavior on the EVE forums is perfectly reasonable once you realize that it essentially functions as an EVE mini-game. The first thing you do is pick which skills to start training first:
Tear Harvesting: Self-explanatory. Level V Bonus: Harvest non-existent tears of people making mild suggestions/requests.
Flame-Baiting: Enrage your foes! Works well with Tear Harvesting. Level V Bonus: Thread Derailing.
Apathy: Ability to not care, regardless of relevance or significance. Defensive skill. Level V Bonus: Flame-Bait reversal.
E-peen flexing: Cut your opponent down with superior in-game knowledge. Best paired with Apathy. Level V Bonus: "It sound good on paper, but if you actually PLAYED THE GAME, you'd know it doesn't work like that".
Once you have begun training the skills you have selected, you start combing through the forums. Each thread is an option mission with the opportunity to increase your standings and gain loyalty points by harvesting tears or enraging your foes without you yourself becoming enraged. Complaint/Suggestion threads are generally considered Level 1 difficulty and are a good place to start. Once you improve your standings high enough, you are allowed into the secret 'cool-kids' club and all is revealed.
Loyalty points are actually worthless since there is pretty much no loyalty within the forums.

Sorry OP.
Compared to the evil creatures that make up the Heroes of Newerth community, EVE is a happy carebear land where everyone stops to say hello and give you a big hug. Seriously, that game is rapidly becoming unplayable due to its Asshat Quotient.

True that, I spent 6 some odd months in RVB many of the people that the Killboards call my Nemesis are my best friends in the game.
In a way I think the Goons and TESTies have it figured out best. It's just a game have fun with it.
If I'm trying to blow up your ship it's not personal, Hell if I ran into you in real life I'd probably buy you a beer and have a few laughs over stupid fits.

To be honest, I have met both Eve and WoW players who are quite eloquent and articulate people. They are engineers, scientists, bankers and accountants.
It is just sad that many choose to speak of the negatives rather than seeing past them and look ahead for the positives. I think most should adopt some positivity and look forward for the better.
That is, unfortunately, something that the minority learn through experience. --------- Sent from my BlackBerry. |

It's funny, actually, because I see more carebear tears, whining, insults and teenage angst in this game than I ever did when I played WoW. This was even before I joined TEST!
EVE players need to stop thinking they are so damn elite. This game doesn't require a mathematics degree or any kind of twitch reflexes, it's just one big database with time delayed actions. When people stop taking themselves so seriously and stop thinking they are better human beings than other gamers, there will be change.

The problem with that analogy is that it only works if you truly believe eve to be a serious thing, rather than, you know, a video game. I have no problem killing, stealing, manipulating, scamming or doing anything else of that sort in eve because at the end of the day it is, in fact, just a game. No matter what someone does to you, the worst thing you can say about them is that they kicked your ass at a video game, and the sooner you realize this the sooner you can stop stressing out about crap that happens in eve. Speaking from experience, you'll enjoy the game much more. |

I'm sorry, I played WoW (Onyxia server) for a year and a half and was quite active on the forums. EVE pales in comparison to the amount of vitriol of the playerbase in WoW. I was shocked at the difference when I started playing EVE and EQ2 again in the community. - - [SERVICE] Corp Standings For POS anchoring
