This is something I have been thinking about a lot recently in regards to anchoring structures, such as Control towers and their related modules, and the massive ammount of time required to fully deploy one. I write this to perhaps spark the concept in the mind of a CCP dev.
ORE OUTRIGGER: This ship would be of the capital class, about the same size or slightly bigger than the orca so that it can dock if nessecary. It would have the sole role for anchoring and managing structures in deep space. To this end, it would be equiped with number of bonuses for this, such as a bonus to Anchoring/Onlining speeds. The ability to supplement a control towers anchoring/onlining abilities allowing multiple modules to be anchored and onlined at the same pos simultaneously comes to mind as well, in the form of an industrial reconfiguration module. Im thinking- Capital Industrial Ships skill bonuses: -5% per level to anchoring/onlining time +1 additional pos module that can be anchored simultaneously when linked to a control tower per level -5% reduction in fuel consumption for industrial cores per level
and perhaps a Role Bonus- Dedicated POS Fuel bay 100km3something
Jump Drive Capability would be a must.
Gone would be the horrible grueling hours spent setting up large deathstar pos's, meaning more time to actually have fun.
I would imagine this kind of ship would see more use in the hands of large alliances that deploy handfuls of structures in space every day, as opposed to smaller alliances.
I put my idea forth to you, dear community. Improve or Scrutinize this as you see fit. What have I accidentaly left out of the design? What else would you expect to see on a ship like this? Ok Go-

This actually isnt a bad idea, but perhaps it should have some kind of penalty if you're trying to speed-anchor in sov space that doesnt belong to you? Otherwise we'll be inundated in "Nerf Outrigger" posts

Wouldn't it be more prudent to look for ways to make POS a thing of the past entirely, rather than coming up with new life-support options for that most heinous of things?

I like this idea as well, maybe an addition would be once a ship like this jumps into hostile territory, that a msg will be send to the sov holder informing that the ship has entered system x, or let the bonus' only apply to non-sov or sov owned by the alliance the player flying the ship is in. Nothing in education is so astonishing as the amount of ignorance it accumulates in the form of facts. |

Nice... Now when can we start seeing Industrial Frigates, Cruisers, and Titans? And I also want to see a new type of Tech III Subsystem: Industrial Subsystem -- As an Amarr Defector, I chose to become a Mercenary and Industrialist. I also have one goal in mind: Create a new age of peace and prosperity for all four empires. |

Edited by: Kyros Emerson on 18/02/2011 18:52:45 Another thought: When the Outrigger is deploying to anchor more than one structure, it would be cool if it physically attaches itself to the control tower or has some kind of animation linked to a control tower when the industrial reconfiguration module is active. Like those light rays you see emitting from from a ship using a tractor beam. It would have to be within a certain distance from a tower or it would not let you turn module on.

the entire POS system is dated and should be redone, see that dead horse thread everyone keeps beating.
I like the idea of POS dedicated ship. I think you're on the right track.

A long time ago I proposed the idea or a range of deep space construction ships to help out with assembling a POS.
On the whole I agree with the idea but I have 2 thoughts
1) have a smaller not jump capable one that only gets bonus to industrial/research related bonus. Mainly for hi sec builds but could also prove useful for wormhole space due to its much lower mass.
2) give it a very week version of a POS shield say 0.5KM diameter , so that if you are unanchoring modules/towers someone cannot just grab them at the end of the timer.
Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

Black Ops can use both gates and a jump drive. I would say this ship should be able to do the same. That would allow it to have a role in empire as well as low/0.0 As for the pos shield. Interesting idea but as we all know CCP likes to be able to explain the science behind the abilities, and (According to CCP science fiction) forcefields can only be generated by stationary structures or those in geostationary orbit in a vaccuum. A ship with a forcefield would be unable to enter a forcefield, much like when you try to place a Planck field inside a Planck field. Force fields give total immunity to any ship within their radius. We would see Fleet Commanders turning up to massive fleet fights and just turning on the forcefield, so they can call primary targets from relative saftey. Having a ship with that kind of defencive power would be... NERF OUTRIGGER! This does spark an idea in my mind however about people grabbing modules when they are unanchored. Perhaps the Capital tractor beam could be modified in this instance. Allow the ship to fit Capital tractor beams, and modify the capital tractor beam to work on unanchored structures, to pull them inside the range of the Outrigger to be scooped into the cargo hold. There are of course limitations for this in the current build, such as the inability to target anything while inside a forcefield, or having to be inside 2500m to unanchor a structure. Perhaps exceptions to these rules could be made for the outrigger, as it is designed to operate from within a POS forcefield. It could allow the Outrigger to be used as a POS deconstruction vessal, adding another facet to its role. What do you think?

I was only thinking of a force field with a couple of hundred points. Just something that could slow anyone trying to scoop the tower down and force them to criminally flag them selves so any defenders can have a go at them before they get the tower.
However the idea of the capital tracker beam is better, since you would expect a construction vessel to be able to move large objects around. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

Lets add that in too. I like the idea of a mini-outrigger. Not the industrial/research part tho. Maybe drop the industrial reconfig mod for the mini-outrigger and the bonus to multi-mod anchoring with it.
