So today I saw a purger fitted Ferox for a steal, so I got it and refitted it like so...
Heavy Missile Launcher I x5 650mm Medium Gallium I Cannon x2
Large Shield Extender II x3 Invulnerability Field II x2
Ballistic Control System I x3 Shield Power Relay II x1
Medium Core Defence Field Purger I x3
Hobgoblin II x5
I got nearly 50k EHP with active invuls and pretty fair DPS. I know a Drake is better (and more boring), but what's the problem with the Ferox? Is it just that it's not the best thing?

Nothing wrong with any ship really. Just not as good as others and every noob out there uses the "best" one.

You have a few choices with the Ferox.
1. Fit rails. In which case it is horrible because of hybrids. 2. Fit HMLs plus one or two rails. In which case it is horrible due to split weapons, or because of the Drake. 3. Fit LAZORZ. In which case you get style points and it does work, but no ship bonuses and it'll kill your cap in very short order. 4. Fit blasters. In which case it is horrible because of hybrids.

HPL fit will kick the crap out of that.
The problem is that you can either missile fit it (which the Drake does much better), blaster fit it (which the Brutix does much better), rail fit it (which basically sucks do to extreme lack of DPS plus to add insult to injury Brutix does it equally well or better), laser fit it (Harbi does much better), or AC fit it (Cane does much better). Arties more or less won't fit.
That's all assuming PvE, mind, but seeing as how our shining example has no prop mod, no tackle, uses unbonused weapons, and is rigged with purgers....

Well, you can nano buffer a Ferox while fitting lasers. Which is does far better than the binger.

Hey, I did specify PvE there. Nano FMP Ganglink Ferox of doom is... special.

A. Hybrids. **** tracking, **** damage mod, **** cycle time, uses ammo and cap. B. **** weapon bonus. Raaaaaaaaaaaange. C. Tier 1 Hull. Already behind the power-curve. Less shield, less grid, less cpu then a Tier 2.

No matter what weapons system you fit, there is a T2 hull which will do it better.

I think it's fairly obvious that he meant TIER 2, not tech 2.

In a gang, where you can get a warp in the blaster ferox can push 650dps and 70k ehp, you just really really really need to warp in for that to work. Although I have always been a fan of the autocannon ferox might not get the dps of the shield cane but the tank THE TANK

Of course it can. It just has the option of fitting another launcher instead. The Ferox has no choice.

If you are in a situation where you can make use of the range, a Sniping Ferox can be very useful. Its the only battlecruiser in the game that can shoot at 125km without completely gimping the fit. Also, since a lot of BC combat occurs at <75km, the "range tank" sniping method can add some capability to your gang. I like the Ferox in the anti-support role, where, at range, you can provide suppressive fire against ECM ships that like to park outside of Drake range, or low-transversal smaller ships.
Lastly, it is very cost-effective. At 2/3rds the fitted price of a Drake, you get a lot of bang for your buck.

The Ferox suffers from identity crisis, it couldnt decide if it wants to be a close-range brawler or a sniper and did get one bonus for each role...

It doesnt have the powergrid to fit a MWD Cap booster, and Dual Medium neuts
And I find for half the price, the ferox is more fun.
And besides who runs from a ferox?

It used to be that a resist bonus of some kind was the most important qualification for a sniping ship to have... strange how things change.

Probably going to get yelled at for doing this, but i have a Ferox fitted with 6x 200mm rails, dc, LSE, tracking comp, tracking enhancer, 2x MFS.. 2x Sensor Boosters and mwd.
havent gotten around to rigging it, not sure what rigs i would want to put on it, and yes the fit is very specific and probably outclassed by everything, but i had a ferox sitting in my hanger and just decided to do something with it..
eft says it does **** damage (225 with my skills) and had **** ehp. but its built for shooting small stuff... bout all i could really think to do with the thing at the time.
Not that you all need me to say this, but feel free to rip me a new one for fitting it like that.
I'd have something witty here but my wits have left me for my alt. |

The Ferox is the ship that I have my most kills in
That said, Ferox is kind of sucky due to: 1) Hybrids being kinda "meh". 2) Tier 1 BC, which means: 2 a) Not enough PG. 2 b) Lacking in slots (Drake has an extra high and mid slot). 3) It's a Caldari Hybrid boat, and like most Caldari hybrid boats, it doesn't have enough cap.

Hmm, 4 slots for sebos and 6 ungrouped guns, armor buffer. Sounds like a great killmail collector

Not that it sucks (though some of the attributes could be better) Just that there's so much better. Really damn near all BC's are better all around or play a better niche roll. Guess it could work ok in a sniper support fleet or something...
It does have cost going for it though.
