Just a little tip. Especially for XP users. USe modded drivers. I use these and get some very nice results. And don't be fazed if it's not the latest version. Latest official release doesn't necessarily mean it's super duper.
I got a 6yr old Dell laptop here. Dell haven't updated the drivers since like 07. Modded drivers keep it running when otherwise it would have been shelved.

No.
Being able to install from the DVD would explain the DVD Drive Requirement.
Copy protection for a subscription model game is meaningless as the media is essentially worthless without the subscription. The revenue comes from the subscription, not the actual media.
While I'm glad that you understand even the fine points of the thematic, I still think you missed the point by about a few billion lightyears.

And I guess should have mentioned that I'm running DirectX 9. (optimistic, I know)
I'll try leaving the character editor screen loading overnight. Maybe(?) that may work.
Thanks for the help chaps
I'd always wanted to see how long I could keep running XP. Looks like Febuary the 24th 2011 is the day I found out.
The issue you're experiencing has nothing to do with DirectX or operating system. _____________________________

Windows XP does not support DirectX 11.
DirecttX 11 is required to create a toon picture through the new character editor.
Therefore, while it is still listed in the system requirements, Eve Online is in fact not compatible with Windows XP anymore
I can still play Eve as it stands now, only without a face.
ps. I still use XP as some work related software is use is only available for XP
The minimum operating system supported is Windows XP Service Pack 2 and we ship the DirectX version needed, see ...\CCP\EVE\bin\DirectX.
What video card do you have and how much VRAM does it have?
